Introduction:
We invite you to take part in a research study being conducted by Dru Morrison who is a student in the Masters
of Arts program at Dalhousie University. Taking part in the research is up to you; it is entirely your choice. Even if
you do take part, you may leave the study at any time for any reason. The information below tells you about
what is involved in the research, what you will be asked to do and about any benefit, risk, inconvenience or
discomfort that you might experience.
Please ask as many questions as you like. If you have any questions later, please contact the lead investigator.
Purpose and outline of the research project:
This research looks at the role discussions regarding diversity has in creating relationships between students
who self-identify as persons of colour and the organization of Dalhousie University. Discussions regarding
diversity have become prevalent when looking at the role of organizations in creating enriching and inclusive
environments. Diversity considers various kinds of identities, from gender and sexual orientation, to issues
regarding class, nationality, religion and race. This study is looking at the latter specifically, and how race is
spoken of in the context of diversity and organizational policy created to address issues of race. The intent of
this study is to understand how students who identify as people of colour understand diversity and what kind of
role (if any) this discussion takes in the lives of these students. The data in this interview will be used to answer
the projects research question, what role does diversity take in the relationship between students who
identify as people of colour, and their post-secondary institution?
Who can take part in the research study?
You may participate in this study if you self-identify as a person of colour, are at least 18 years of age, and
currently enrolled as a student, or employed, at Dalhousie University.

21

How many people are taking part in the study?

This project will include the participation of 100 students filling out a survey, and 8 self-identifying students of
colour in one-on-one interviews. Also, 2 interviews will be conducted with Dalhousie employees who contribute
to diversity policy.
What you will be asked to do?
The researcher will ask for you to engage in a conversation regarding diversity and your experiences as a
Dalhousie student who self-identifies as a person of colour, or are an employee at Dalhousie who help create, or
administer measures regarding, diversity policy. The researcher has developed an interview guide with several
questions pertaining to this. The guide is not strict, however, and it is hoped that the discussion develops its own
character and momentum, while still remaining within the frame of the researchers interests. It is expected of
the agreeing participant to be interviewed only once for a period of 45 minutes. If consent is given, the
participant will be quoted directly for use in the final thesis.
Possible benefits, risks and discomforts
Your participation will have little, if any, direct benefits. It is anticipated that your participation in this discussion
will only help further the researchers ability to accurately answer the research question.
Risks are minimal, and it is not expected that participants divulge information too personal to cause discomfort.
Should discomfort arise, which can be expected for some who may take issue with discussing issues of race, or
who find their experience of race to be significantly personal, the participant is reminded that they may end the
interview at any point for any reason whatsoever.
How your information will be protected:
The information you give in this interview will be kept private. In most cases, it will be only the primary
researcher who will have access to the materials gathered during your participation. In some rare instances,
however, other Dalhousie University officials, such as the Research Ethics Board or the Scholarly Integrity
Officer, may ask for access to these materials. The information you provide will be referenced in a thesis, where
your identity will be protected through the use of pseudonyms, and all identifying information will be left
unsaid.
Should you allow the researcher to audio record this discussion, the audio file will be stored for a brief period on
an audio-recording device (ie. Smartphone), transferred to a password-protected personal computer, and finally
stored on a local hard drive. The transcribing of the discussion will be done on the same computer, where it will
be similarly stored.
If you decide to stop participating:
You are free to leave the study at any time. If you decide to stop participating at any point during the study, you
can also decide whether you want any of the information that you have contributed up to that point to be
removed or if you will allow us to use that information. You can also decide for up to 1 week if you want us to
remove your data. This is because the data will be quickly analyzed in order to conform to the time constraints
placed upon the researcher.
