The location of the new K-12 school was presented and approved by town council at a special
council meeting on April 28. Golden Hills School
Division was notified last year that Strathmore had
been approved for a new school by the provincial
government. Since then they have been working
with the town, looking for the right location.
The proposal brought to council was to have the
new school located in Edgefield. The land will be
dedicated as municipal school reserve, with the
title transferred to the school board and the town.
The school will be located in a community
where development is ongoing and occurring, as
such the school site supports the overall development of that community, said Werner Fischer,
director of planning and development.
Bevan Daverne, superintendant of schools for
GHSD, is pleased that a suitable site has been secured for the joint building project of the school
and a recreation facility.
We are excited (that) town council has taken
this important first step and are looking forward to
beginning the design process with all our partners
for the new facilities, said Daverne. In addition
to being a solution for the growing needs of the
school division, we see this combined facility as a
wonderful asset for town and county residents.
Councillor Rocky Blokland was opposed to the
Edgefield location.
My reasons are because even though I realize the dome was the kicker in this thing for the
school site, the Hillview location to me is the logical site, there should be no deadlines there, the
community is well established, roads, pedestrian
crossing are in place, its a much safer area right
from the start, said Blokland.
I would suggest that we continue to work with
this developer, or both these developers, on the
next school site, obviously with the dome being
part of that plan.
Councillor Pat Fule stated that by working together as partners it may make Strathmore more
favourable, and put the town higher on the list
when it comes time for the province to determine
which schools will be built and when.
I would hate to see us not pursue this matter
in the way were thinking because it may make us
fall down as far as being a desirable community
for an approved school by the government to be,
said Fule.
A motion was made to have council negotiate
a Memorandum of Understanding with the developer, which will facilitate the construction of
a school site and field house on 12 acres of land
within the Edgefield Area Structure Plan.

cleanup efforts on April

occurred
west of Carseland on
a sidetrack near Township Road 221 and

Train derailment quickly contained

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

A train derailment west of Carseland
was quickly contained and cleaned up
on April 23. CP Rail spokesperson Salem Woodrow said the incident occurred
at approximately 2:15 p.m.
A freight train derailed eight cars near
the community of Carseland. Seven were

carrying products used to make fertilizer and one car was empty. This was a
slow speed derailment, said Woodrow.
CPs emergency protocols were immediately enacted, along with safety precautions and measures, as CPs crews, local officials and emergency responders
reported to the scene.
In situations like that the first thing
we do is contain the site, make sure that

Rodeo tarp auction

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

On April 7 the WPCA held their annual tarp auction for the 2015 chuckwagon racers. In the past the auction
could run six hours or more, but this
year in an effort to hurry things along,
the WPCA presented the option of presales up until March 23.
There were 36 wagons and drivers
were able to sell their tarps prior to
the April 7 auction. Race venue committees, like the Strathmore and District
Agricultural Society, were able to look
over and approve the tarps prior to the
auction.
Herb McLane, general manager for
the Ag Society, said there were 16 tarps
approved, leaving 30 up for auction.
The general results of the sale in Strathmore worked out to a total amount of
bids at $195,000, with an average sale

of $5,416, and the highest selling tarp

going for $10,000.
Our results were off a bit year-overyear, about 20 per cent, and thats pretty much what we had projected given
the economic times, the oil patch, other
factors that are out in the market place,
said McLane, which he said was about
what the Society had expected.
Our public that likes rodeo likes
wagons, theyre real fans, so ticket sales
go briskly, either as packages with the
rodeo, or some folks just come for the
wagons.
The Stampede and Heritage Days
rodeo is the big event of the year, the
largest core event for the Ag Society. It
happens each year thanks to the investment, hands and volunteers who put
time in. McLane said the Society does
offer more than just rodeo, they are a
year-round event park with lots going
on and plans for more.

no one gains access. Meanwhile professionals, so the hazmat group CPs representatives- would assess the situation,
said Alan Parkin, chief administrative officer for Wheatland County.
We had a site meeting there, CP organized a site meeting (at approximately
5:30 p.m.) and let everybody know
the situation and that the site was fine
and contained and that we could stand
down our fire department.
Parkin said CP called in professionals from Calgary to assess the situation.
Large equipment was also brought in to
right the train cars, and to help safely remove the material from within the cars.
The derailment didnt occur on the
mainline, it instead took place on one of
the spur lines.
Woodrow said there were no injuries
to the crew, nor any environmental concerns or public safety issues, and said
the incident will undergo a full investigation.

Q: What education is required to be a

funeral director/embalmer?
A: There are two schools in Alberta that offer

licensing in funeral directing: the Canadian

College of Funeral Service and Mount Royal
University. Both schools offer funeral director
courses and funeral director/embalmer joint
courses, each taking a minimum of two years
to complete. The program includes both
course work as well as a preset number of
hours required, sponsored by a funeral home.
A student must then pass both the schools
exams and the licensing exam issued by the
Alberta Funeral Service Regulatory Board, the
governing body of funeral service in Alberta.
Furthermore, to obtain an embalming license,
the student must pass a supervised practicum.
Funeral directors and embalmers are also
required to complete courses every three
years to maintain their license.

ANDREA ROBERTS

Hello Strathmore Times readers. My
name is Andrea Roberts and I am the
Times newest intern. You will probably
be seeing some of my work during the
summer, so let me tell you a bit about
myself.
In the fall I will be going into my
third year of the Journalism degree at
Mount Royal University in Calgary and
I am hoping that this summer will help
me to grow as a journalist.
About three years ago my family and
I moved to Calgary from South Africa.
After arriving in the country I had to
decide what I wanted to study.
Naturally I looked at who I am and
what I liked. I love to write stories
and I love to read. In fact in my handbag you will often find a book or two.
From what other people have told me
I am a rather nice person and a bit of a
jokester once you get to know me.
However, I am also quite shy and a
bit of an introvert. So the choice was
obvious I was to become a journalist.
It also looked really interesting in the

booklet.
Surprisingly I enjoy the life of a journalist; its a bit like being a detective.
I sleuth around with my camera and
notebook while tracking the perfect
source to ask questions.
I chose to intern here at the Strathmore Times because of what a wonderful place the town is. I prefer the
close knit-community of Strathmore to
the hustle and bustle of busy Calgary.
It also doesnt hurt that I have quite a
number of friends here.
So dear readers, I look forward to
this summer and I look forward to presenting your news in the best way that
I can.

Strathmore RCMP are looking for two
people in connection with a break and
enter that occurred to a rural residence
on April 16. A complaint was called in,
and its suspected the break and enter
took place that afternoon.
The suspects forced the door open,
and took jewelry and a laptop from the
home. A mounted camera took photographs of a male and female who were
on the property that afternoon.
The camera shows that the couple
drove onto the property in what appears to be a dark Honda CRV. The male

When you visit your doctor about a problem (like

pain), be a good reporter. Plan how you will give
your doctor information. The better reporter you are,
the better the chance your doctor can help. If it is
pain, use descriptive words like stabbing, sharp,
dull, achy. It is sometimes helpful to write down
your comments so you dont miss anything and it
saves time as well.
Pharmacists put a shake well label on some
liquid prescriptions. Its important to heed that label.
Some liquids are suspensions and the medication
may settle to the bottom of the bottle. Shaking will
distribute the medication evenly and ensure you
receive the right dose. Childrens liquid antibiotics
are a good example.
More is better is something that doesnt always
apply to drugs. Drugs often reach a peak level of
effectiveness at a certain dose and taking more will
often not give better results. But side effects can
occur at higher doses. Follow your doctors orders
regarding how much medication to take.
Protect your teeth by keeping certain foods to
a minimum. Even soft drinks and sports drinks
contain acids that can corrode tooth enamel. Dried
fruit can stick to teeth surfaces. Some contain extra
sugar, too. Even yummy potato chips get into tooth
crevices and stay. Its hard to avoid some of these
foods and drinks but brushing soon after eating them
will avoid tooth decay and other problems.

Election 2015
With an election called for May 5, we are asking the candidates questions to help you get to know them better. The third
question is Why should the people of Strathmore-Brooks put an X beside my name?
I would never make
that large of a presumption. As I stated
when I started my
campaign that I would
have to earn the trust
of the voters of Strathmore-Brooks
before
I could ever hope to
earn their vote. If I
have
accomplished
that then I might be worthy of that honour.
My party is new. We are only running 34 candidates this election. We had made the commitment
we would only run qualified and vetted people
and we wouldnt parachute anyone into constituencies just so we could say we had 87 candidates. Will all our candidates win? No, but it
wont be for not caring about their constituency
or Alberta.
Voting for the PCs will only be a continuation of
the 30 years of mismanagement which has squandered our legacy and put us in this situation to
begin with. We need to ask ourselves if we are
prepared to be 10 years down the road and right
back where we started. We thought that we had
fixed our problems back in the 90s but we are
right back to where PCs of the late 1980s left us.
A Heritage Fund that hasnt grown to even keep
pace with inflation, our infrastructure in worse
shape than it ever has been, and a sense of entitlement that didnt leave with Allison Redford.

The Stathmore Poker Run is celebrating

its 16th year of raising funds for
Kids Cancer Care.
Since the beginning we have raised over $173,000
to assist Children and Their Families dealing with
children affected by cancer.

We are reaching out to the communitee for assistance

in making 2015 our biggest fund raiser yet.

The Wildrose is great for making spectacles and

are very good showmen with their visual aids
and gadgets. Should the most money spent by
a candidate win elections? You need to ask if a
Wildrose MLA will neglect Strathmore-Brooks so
he can take the Wildrose dog and pony show to
other places around Alberta. They can say how
much they will serve our constituency, but we
need to ask if Strathmore-Brooks is just a stepping stone to larger political aspirations, because
their actions point that way.
If I am given the honour to represent you, the
constituents of Strathmore-Brooks. I will promise you that my first and last duty will be to
Strathmore-Brooks. I will represent your views,
wishes and vision in the legislature and you will
see me attending meetings all over the constitu-

ency so I know what you need me to do on your

behalf. I wont let you down by changing parties
or crossing the floor. My desire is not power but
representing you to the best of my abilities, every
day, in and out of the legislature. I will promise
no more than that.
In closing I will ask two things of you. Regardless of who you support please vote, if you have
never voted before please vote. Be thoughtful
and vote your conscience. I believe democracy
belongs to those who vote and Id like to see it
belong to all Albertans. Thank you again for the
opportunity to earn your vote.

Why should the

people of StrathmoreBrooks put an X beside my name?
I would like to set
the stage by first saying that I married into
a family with community ties which go back
over 100 years. The
Strathmore-Brooks
constituency is my home. I have invested 34
years of participation, volunteerism, and activism
in our communities.
So what is the bottom line in terms of expectations and outcomes for the Strathmore-Brooks
Constituency post-election?
The bottom line is:
1. You need to be confident the political leaders you elect have a credible plan with the courage to follow through with it.
2. You need to have an MLA who is part of the
government.
I am a person who in both my private and
public life has a history of pursuing practical solutions to difficult problems. I aspire to lead by
example, which has been demonstrated during
my tenure as Principal of Bassano School and as
reeve of the County of Newell.
In the realm of finance and investment, every

prediction is followed with a caveat that past

performance does not predict or guarantee future
performance.
When it comes to human behavior, the opposite is true. Ones track record invariably predicts
future behavior.
During the last 11 years, the County of Newell has taken a forward looking approach which
has resulted in a regional and rural potable water system as well as a road system that annually
increases the number of kilometers of County
paved roads. As well, our Newell Foundation has
recently received 12 million dollars to initiate the
Bassano Project, an aging in community complex/health centre. Being able to deliver such
services to ratepayers is why I am involved in
politics.
When you put an X beside my name, you can
have confidence that I will follow through with a
reasoned, practical plan aimed at effectively dealing with any difficult times ahead. It is in the best
interests of all Strathmore-Brooks Constituents to
have an MLA who is working with the government.
Please allow me to make a difference for all of
you and your communities.

PC Candidate

The Alberta First Party (AFP) believes that each

individual has the right to live his/her own life
as he/she sees fit. This right is the source of all
other rights. The AFP will work toward defining
the fundamental roles and restrictions of government and will define the separation of the Government from the economy, religion and education. The society we seek to build with Albertans
is one wherein individuals are free, within the
law, to pursue happiness and prosperity in their
own ways.
We believe that respect for individual rights is
the essential precondition for a free and prosperous province, that fear from force and fraud must
be removed from our lives, and that only through
freedom can peace and prosperity be realized.
Albertans have always believed in a free market system, which makes Alberta unique in Canada and the World. The AFP defends each persons
right to engage in activities and businesses that
are peaceful and lawful.
The main functions of government, whose
powers must be constitutionally limited, are:
- Providing protection from criminals
- Providing protection from foreign invaders
- Settling legal disputes among individuals
where voluntary arbitration has failed
Within the Canadian Parliamentary system, Albertans do not have, never have had and never
will have a properly represented voice in the affairs of Canada for which we pay the lions share.
Alberta has the lowest number of MPs per capita

(2015 allotment) and the third lowest number of

Senators per capita. The AFP supports governments that are more representative of the electorate at the federal, provincial and local levels.
The AFP rejects any and all encroachments
into the autonomy of Albertans by unelected people or organizations such as the United Nations.
Freedom of expression must not be limited.
Freedom of speech and the press is encouraged,
provided that free speech does not breach laws
or constitute threats of physical violence or incite
or promote physical violence against individuals
or groups of individuals, or cause malicious and/
or falsely-based financial harm to others. Violations will be addressed using laws provided for
that purpose.
Because the International language for Commerce is English, English will be the only Official
Language in Alberta.
The Alberta First Party would claim the constitutional rights available to all provinces in Canadas Constitution but unclaimed by any previous
Alberta Provincial Government. These include,
but are not limited to:
Property Rights
Referenda and Recall appropriate for use by
ordinary citizens
An Alberta Constitution separate from the
Constitution of Canada
Collection of taxes by the Alberta provincial
government
Establishment of an Alberta Police Force

Its time for change

and renewal
On May 5, Albertans
will make a historic
choice.
Choosing a 13th
big PC majority would
mean $2,500 in higher
taxes, a blank cheque
to impose a PST, continued overspending,
and continued corruption for the partys cronies.
It would be rewarding the same club that broke
the bank during a period of record oil prices, and
then blames Albertans for it. It would be reaffirming their belief that they can do anything that
they want, and still cling to power.
A vote for Wildrose is a vote for a strong voice,
and a vote for change.
As the former Alberta Director of the Canadian
Taxpayers Federation, I am a proven fighter for
taxpayers and for everyday Albertans.
If youve ever watched question period in the
legislature, then youve seen Tory backbenchers
asking puff-ball questions to ministers, written
by those very ministers!
Unlike some other candidates, I dont just read
the party line written for me by some PR spindoctor in Edmonton. If youve been reading my
columns in these pages over the last few months,
you know that I write my own words and think
for myself.
While some would represent the government
to Strathmore-Brooks, I will represent Strathmore-Brooks to the government.
A vote for the Wildrose is a vote to roll back
Prentices planned $2,500 increase to your taxes
and take on $31 billion in debt.
To do this, the Wildrose will reduce spending
by $2.2 billion this year and $3.4 billion by 2017.
That will allow us to balance our budget, stop

taking on debt, and not raise taxes.

We will roll back the Prentice budgets attack
on the charitable tax credit, and we will never
spend $28 million on an early election. We have
a fixed election date law in Alberta, and we will
respect the law.
We will ban all corporate and union donations
to ensure that politicians cannot be bought by the
interests that they are doing business with.
We will make it illegal for politicians who are
elected as an MLA for one party to cross the floor
to another without a by-election.
We will give parents a clear letter or percentage grade on their childrens report card and
make Albertas education system world class once
again.
We will eliminate mandatory schools fees.
We will focus healthcare dollars on the frontline, not on bureaucrats, managers and communications consultants.
We will fight to ensure that Strathmore and
Brooks has the quality long-term seniors care
that was promised by successive PC premiers, but
never delivered.
We will stop the practice of nickel-and-diming
people every time they visit the hospital with two
hours of free parking.
We will stand up for rural Alberta as both the
economic engine and cultural heartland of the
greatest province in the greatest country in the
world.
After 44 years, its time to turn the page. Its
time for a fresh, new voice that stands up for everyday Albertans. Its time for change.

Voters should put

an X beside my name
because I have experience in serving constituents after having
worked for various
members of Parliament. I will be a hardworking MLA for the
people of StrathmoreBrooks. On Rachel
Notleys team, Ill fight for my community and
work hard for all Albertans.
I am Lynn MacWilliam, born in Vancouver,
raised in Burnaby, B.C. I am a mother of three
and grandmother of four.
I moved to the Yukon in 1979, living in Faro
and Whitehorse. I worked for Audrey McLaughlin, the MP for Yukon, as well as MLAs in the
Yukon Government.
In 1997 I moved to Ottawa where I worked
on Parliament Hill for a variety of Members of
Parliament.
Working on the Hill was one of the most satisfying jobs I have ever had. Seeing how the decisions of politicians affect day-to-day life showed
me the importance of good governance and legislation that makes life better for people.
In 2012 my eldest daughter had a stroke and
my life changed. I took early retirement so I
could care for her and we started looking for a
place where we could all live together as a family.
We moved to the Town of Bassano. It had a
good school for the grandchildren, a hospital for
Kendra, and was on the Trans-Canada Highway
- providing easy access to specialists in Calgary.
After working with many wonderful elected officials over the years, I decided, during the 2013

municipal elections, that it was time to throw my

own hat in the ring. I won a seat and am now
very proud to serve my community as a town
councillor. As a councillor, I am working to promote the Town of Bassano as a place to do business and a place to raise a family.
I am running for the NDP because I believe
that my partys values most closely reflect those
of everyday people, not just big banks and large
corporations.
You can trust Rachel Notley and the Alberta
NDP to work hard to improve health care, education and seniors care. They will create a fair
taxation system that allows all Albertans to thrive
and succeed.
Rachel has a practical plan to make our economy stronger by supporting our local companies
and small businesses that employ most people in
Alberta and rewarding job creators with targeted
tax credits. She will create stable, mortgage-paying jobs by making sure our resources are processed here at home.
After 44 years, the Progressive Conservatives
are tired, arrogant and not governing for the people of this province. Its time for a leader who
stands up for what matters to Alberta families
and Rachel is that leader.
The PCs squandered our resource wealth
when times were good and now theyre trying to
blame hard-working Albertans for their mistakes,
making them pay more to get less. It is time for
a change.
As an MLA for the NDP, I will stand up for
families in the riding of Strathmore-Brooks and
all of Alberta.

Economic Action Plan 2015

KEVIN SORENSON, M.P., CROWFOOT

Parliamentary Report

Canadas Economic Action Plan 2015 is for Canadians. We have a balanced budget, we are making
life more affordable for families and seniors, and
we are encouraging job-creating businesses to expand, all while protecting Canadians here at home.
In 2008 we made a commitment to Canadians
that we were going to invest in infrastructure to
grow the economy in the depths of the recession,
but we committed that in 2015 we would come
back to a balanced budget. We have lived up to
that commitment. Canadian families sit down at
the table, establish a budget, and live within their
means. They expect governments to do the same,
and this government is doing just that.
This is a budget that helps all Canadians. It helps
small business. We are lowering the small business
tax rate to nine percent, the biggest cut in 25 years.
We are investing in skill development and job creation, to give young people the skills for the jobs
of tomorrow.
Its a budget that helps families. By putting an
additional $6,600 in the pockets of the average
family of four, we are telling Canadians that the
best people to decide what is best for their family
is mom and dad, not government bureaucrats.
For seniors, many groups asked for changes
around the Registered Retirement Income Funds
and we brought forward those changes in this
budget as well. We made a commitment to double

the Tax-Free Savings Account, and we have again

kept that promise. Seniors are an enormous percentage of those who use the TFSA, we want them
to continue to have a dignified retirement, and
they know all of these measures help.
A governments number one priority is to protect
our citizens at home and abroad. The measures
that weve brought forward are going to enhance
that. Canadians rely on us to take the fight against
terrorism very seriously and this budget helps the
RCMP, our security agencies as well as our Canadian Armed Forces. These measures are going to
keep Canada secure and safe.
As we move forward, Canada is positioned to
compete globally. We have positioned Canadians
to better save for their retirement. We have positioned Canadian business to succeed and to create jobs and move forward with the many new
markets. We have created record support for families and seniors. And we continue to invest in the
women and men who stand on guard for us at
home. This is a budget all Canadians can be proud
of.

Dancers with Expressions the Dance Gallery
(EDG) of Strathmore returned home with their
arms full of hardware.
While attending Catch A Rising Star Dance Festival in Drumheller the EDG competition teams
were very successful receiving numerous high
score awards.
Thirty-four students from EDG representing Strathmore, Chestermere, Lyalta, Dalemead,
Carstairs, Gleichen and Standard attended the
dance festival.
The EDG faculty are so proud of our students.
They have put so much hard work into their choreography and its really paying off, says Heather

Thomas.
We have three competitive teams at the studio
each representing a different level or standard of
dance, and all three teams did an amazing job.
Drumheller was our second competition of the
season but the first opportunity for our pre-competitive team to strut their stuff, says Heather.
The festival had over 200 performances and
EDG came home with the top marks and the highest awards possible of the weekend. Megan Leeper centre front in the picture received the overall
highest score in the festival with a mark of 95 for
her Musical Theater solo, says Heather
The faculty are looking forward to the four remaining competitions and festivals before their
big year-end show on June 20th at the Southern
Alberta Jubilee Auditorium in Calgary.

Okay, so Im not Steve McQueen!

PAT FULE
Fule for Thought
Recently, Deb and I went to the Canmore Lions
Charter Night. It was a nice evening with a great
meal. In addition, there was a silent auction and a
50/50 draw. The beauty of this was that Deb won
that draw, and she pocketed a cool $270! Thats the
good part.
The bad part, is that she was one busy little silent
auction shopper, and came away with three items!
The strangest part was that she bid for and won
a $20 cheese knife. Now, I have no problem with
her buying anything, but a cheese knife? My wife
is lactose intolerant! Why on earth would she buy a
cheese knife? I laughed about this all evening, and
Im still bugging her today! I mean, I cant swim to
save my life, but I wouldnt buy a day pass to a swimming pool! So, if anyone wants a cheese knife still in
the wrapper, let us know!
I cant be mad at her, it was pretty funny, and I am
a pretty lucky guy to have her! I mean, its not like
Im a Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise (although I am almost
as odd as old Tom)!
In fact, Im not the kind of guy whos ever turned
the ladies heads. Oh sure, there was a time (50
pounds ago) when some girl mightve smiled at me,
but I was always worried if I reacted, itd turn out
she was smiling at the guy behind me! In fact, some
of my high school students have seen old SHS yearbook photos of me. The usual reaction is something
like: thats you? Really, you looked so young then,
and your hair is so brown! What happened?
Its then I that I point out to them that they (high
school students) have sucked the life energy from
me, and this is the shell thats left! Sure, its a larger,
softer shell but its still a shell!
There really is only one time in a bar when I can
remember any girl showing interest in me! It was
in Canmore in 1997, when we were all out for my
fathers funeral. That summer I had been running
regularly, and doing a lot of physical yard work on
our new house. So, what Im trying to say is that this
was the only time when all the stars were aligned
this was to be my Perfect Storm.
Or rather, slight shower! My brother, another pal,
and I were at the Drake Pub in Canmore, as my dad
was a regular there. We were sitting at a table with
the manager Dave, drinking draft, and the other guys
were also smoking cigars. We were basically telling

stories about my dad. A young lady had joined us,

and she was telling me about her volunteer work
with seniors, and I remember complimented her on
her positive attitude and volunteerism. I never noticed anything, even when she asked me if I smoked
cigars, too. I said they were gross, and she said
good as she excused herself to the bathroom.
Thats when Dave the manager said, wow, shes
really into you! She never hangs around a table with
any of my friends, shes definitely interested.
I believe I stuttered the words, are you k-k-idding
me?
My pal, who was here for dads funeral said something like, you dog!
The problem was, this does not happen to me, and
I didnt know what to do! The one thing that came to
me was get out of there!
And so I did! In fact, I ran (probably not in a very
straight line) to the nearest phone booth you remember those?! Deb was at her parents with our
kids, and back then we only had one cell phone.
So, I called her and explained the whole situation.
I guess I was expecting a heartfelt reaction, or an I
love you, you crazy lug!
Imagine my surprise when she answered with giggling!
Some younger girl was putting the moves on
you?
More giggling followed this was not the response I had envisioned! More giggling followed!
Well I dont know if she was hitting on me, thats
what Dave said, and I wanted to do the right thing!
And by the way, for all we know, she mightve been
into me
I believe my feelings were hurt!
Where are you now? she asked. I gave my location, and probably sulked while I sat in front of the
booth. It wasnt long before Deb arrived, and greeted
me with more giggling, followed by a kiss on the
cheek.
We drove to her folks house, and every now and
then she giggled. It didnt matter, I thought. I mean,
heck, maybe Steve McQueen and I have a lot in common!

Helping dreams come true

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Members of St. Ritas church in Rockyford are hoping to
make dreams come true for 12 families in Thurakapalem,
India. The church is hoping to raise enough money to build
12 homes, each at a cost of $12,500.
The original plan was to provide the money in three stages. Carol Munchrath, one of the fundraising coordinator, said
they werent sure how people would respond to the project
and they thought it might take three collection dates to obtain their first goal, which was enough funds for the first
house.
We have managed to do before the end of April which is
pretty amazing for us as a small community and its not just
the group within the St. Ritas Church, its the whole community thats been contributing and so its very, very special
to have everyone involved in the project in that way, and
interested in the project, said Munchrath.
The new homes being built will replace the mud huts that
the villagers currently live in. These huts often have snakes,
rats and other rodents come into them, and during monsoon
season many are destroyed.
The new homes will be on a cement pad, with cement
brick walls, roofs, windows and doors, that will provide a
safe, secure, sturdy and healthy environment for the families.
Electricity, clean running water and sewage disposal will also
be provided.
The most important stage is the first one, tearing down the
old home, and setting up the new foundation, the cement
pads, getting all that final stuff in place before the rainy season begins.
Its such an interesting project, the pilot home that was
built, the people are just so happy, and its just unbelievable,
said Munchrath.
Were quite excited about it.
The sponsoring organization for the project is the Calgary Diocesan Mission Council in Calgary, who will hold the
monies donated and forward them to St. Josephs Church in
Thurakapalem, Andra Pradish State, India.
There are a number of fundraising events in the works,
including a silent auction and dinner featuring western and
Canadian cuisine and Indian cultural entertainment. This is
still in the works, but Munchrath said they hope to host it
on June 20.
Those still wishing to donate can do so by contacting Carol
Munchrath, at Box 339, Rockyford, T0J 2R0. The funds will
be turned into the diocesan council each month. Brochures
and more information about the project can also be found at
the Strathmore Times office, and at the St. Ritas Rockyford
partner group. Contact Diane Cammaert at 403-533-2337, or
Carol Munchrath at 403-533-2266.

Town of Strathmore
continues invoicing County
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The Town of Strathmore Fire Department pulled out of the
mutual aid agreement with the county at the end of last year
and has continued to invoice Wheatland County for response
to calls.
There was a Mutual Aid Agreement in place a number of
years ago. When the town goes out into the county, theyve
been invoicing, said Alan Parkin, Wheatland Countys Chief
Administrative Officer.
There were a total of three calls, including a vehicle fire
on Feb. 23, a bail processor call on March 19, and a house
fire on March 22 at the request of the Strathmore Rural Fire
Department.
The total cost for calls was $13,993.43 and was invoiced to
Wheatland County from the Town of Strathmore.
Parkin admits the reasoning for the town responding to
rural calls is because of one the departments being understaffed in the situations.
There is certain times where the rural dont have enough
members and the town doesnt have enough members so we
try to work together, said Parkin. In the past there has been
no charge, the town has been charging since the new year
on any calls so were trying to work our way through that.
Were trying to work on getting a solution for both parties.

students prepare for big show
ANDREA ROBERTS

Strathmore High School (SHS) will
be putting on a production called The
Bride of Brackenloch from May 11-14.
The show was written by Rick Abbot
and is a three-act play.
The Bride of Brackenloch is a
story set in the Scottish moors during the 1800s. It revolves around Jabez Thorngell whose bride wanders
into the Moors and goes missing. The
characters suspect that the mysterious
monster Bracky has eaten her.
However, 24 hours later Thorngell
has already found a new bride, Daphne.
The new brides life is in danger as
there is a curse surrounding Brackenloch Manor, causing any bride to die
on her wedding day. Yet another mystery looms, for someone has stolen
the thong that hung over the crossed
swords known as Claymores which
hang above the fireplace. Can they
find the thief and save Throngells new
bride?
SHSs drama teacher, Paula Richard-

Treat

son says she picked this script because

while it may be a little wordy it is very
funny. She is proud of the Grade 11
and 12 drama students who are part of
the production. Some of the roles have
been double cast to allow the wide variety of students to have time on the
stage. By the time of the performance
they will have been practicing for 10
weeks.
Richardson also praises her stage
manager Grade 12 student Gabi
Lamoine,
She is amazing. She keeps us all organized.
The efforts of the drama students
have been combined with those backstage, including volunteers from shop
that helped to make the five-foot, long
claymores that hang over the fireplace.
Richardson has also hired some people
to help build the set walls and will be
getting some set pieces from theatre
Calgary.
The show will start at seven and tickets will be $10 sold either at the door
or in advance by calling the high school
at 403-934-3135. The production will
be held in the high school theatre.

Grade 2 class donate

handmade quilt to the needy
ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Contributor

A caring group of Grade 2 students
from Sacred Heart Academy handed
over a special quilt that they made to a
representative from Inn From the Cold
on April 27.
Shelly Jacober, board member from
Inn From the Cold tearfully accepted
the quilt from Trudy Crosbys class. The
quilt is the classs contribution to the
schools Goodworks Project that each
class in the school takes part in. The
quilt will become part of a care hamper
that is given to a family as they leave

the Inn for their new home.

This isnt the first year that a quilt has
been donated; in fact, Crosby and each
of her classes have been doing this for
about 10 years.
We chose Inn From the Cold because they keep the family together.
They look after the family and they
look after the children, said Crosby.
The quilt was patch-worked with
cloth and old jean pockets donated
by the childrens parents. Inside these
pockets were Tim Horton gift cards for
the family who will receive the package while on the material parts of the
quilt was written prayers from the chil-

dren.
The students did the sewing and cutting of the material in class themselves,
with a little help from their parents and
their teacher.
Inn From the Cold has been around
for 17 years and the main location is in
Downtown Calgary. There are churches
that supplement the cause by acting as
shelter. However, according to Jacober,
the shelter has been over capacity this
year as family homelessness grows. Inn
From the Cold tries to keep the family healthy and protected while trying
to find them somewhere permanent to
live.

County unveils 2015 budget

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Wheatland County approved the fiveyear budget that will go from 2015 and
run through to 2019.
There is $51,314,167 that will go towards major capital projects in 2015,
such as the Gleichen Water Supply ($5
million), Rosebud Wastewater Field
($1.6 million) and a road-grading project ($3,589,500).
Its basically the same as last year,
the only thing is that we have is a lot
more capital projects this year, said
Alan Parkin, Wheatland Countys Chief

Administrative Officer. Were doing

quite a bit of work with Rosebud and
the water treatment plant in Gleichen,
those are the two big projects.
We wouldnt typically have those,
there hasnt been any upgrades on
those for 30 years, those are one off
projects that we do, said Parkin.
He added thats why there is a huge
increase in the capital budget.
Also included in the budget is the
transfer of restricted reserve funding
for extraordinary ($1,798,174) and capital ($25,549,756) projects.
The total amount grant funding saw
an increase of $2,440, 561 over a year

ago and now sits at $9,955,402.

$243,059 of the new sum will be used
towards Ag Service Board and Environmental programming.
The increase in grant funding will
help offset the increase in property
taxes while maintaining a high level of
service.
The break down is as follows:
Transfers to reserves: $12, 638,301
Amortization of Assets: $12,504,400
Requisitions for others: $10,472,264
Regular operating expenditures
$9,960,646
Special Projects: $3,957,756
Transfers to capital: $1,780,800

es, said Tiede.

The mill rate was applied to 21 different residences, using one or two houses from each community in town.
The total taxes for the 21 residential
properties increased by $157 in 2015,
from $49,476 in 2014 to $49,632 in
2015. This was an increase in taxation
of $7 per residential property within
the sample year-over-year, and a total
of $15 increase for the two years, said
Tiede.
The education portion of the tax is
remitted to the province of Alberta,
and increased by $37,600 in 2015. An
adjustment has been made to the taxable status of social housing properties,
which includes Wheatland Housing
and Management. In the past the government would pay a grant in place of
taxes. This grant amounted to $47,500
in 2014.
On March 31, 2015 the province announced that this grant would no longer be paid, and the status of properties would be similar to senior homes

Mill rate approved

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

The 2015 tax rate bylaw was presented to council on April 15. Director of
Corporate Services Mel Tiede said the
mill rate is calculated by using the 2015
budget and assessment rolls for taxable
properties within the town.
Property within the town that had
been annexed but not subdivided will
have an applicable mill rate that was
established by Wheatland County.
The residential mill rate is 5.557,
down from 2014s 5.825.
The municipal non-residential rate
is 6.312 compared to 6.474 in 2014.
The total residential mill rate for 2015,
including education and Wheatland
Housing, is 7.978. In 2014 it was at
8.431, which is a decrease of 5.3 per
cent.
The general municipal assessment
base increased by 7.3 per cent as a result of a growth of three per cent, and
the balance being market value increas-

and nursing homes, which are exempt

to taxation, said Tiede.
Combined these two changes (education and social) increase property
taxation in 2015 by eight tenths of one
per cent.
When going through the budget
Tiede and council looked hard to find
ways to keep the tax base low to attract population, and Councillor Denise
Peterson said she remembers distinctly
how hard they worked to take a full
percentage- almost two per cent- off of
the initial tax base.
I find it horrifying that were now
looking at an almost one per cent increase due to the cutback to one of our
most marginalized populations, and we
had intentions brought to this council,
by Councillor Sobol I believe in the past
at looking at enhancing social housing
in our community, this certainly will be,
I think, problematic under this consideration, said Peterson.
The tax rate bylaw was approved by
council.

Week) May 3-9, is a great time to get
prepared for any kind of emergency.
This means being ready to cope for at
least the first 72 hours of an emergency
while emergency workers help those in
urgent need.
Think about a major storm, flood,
or chemical spill. This type of disaster
could affect water supply, cut electricity and phone service for days. What
would you do to keep you and your
family safe? Being prepared can make
this type of situation less stressful for
you and your family.
Here are some ideas that will help
you do something every day, so that by
the end of EP Week, youll be better prepared for whatever comes your way.
Day 1: Check out the new e-book on
GetPrepared.ca. This Government of
Canada website includes information,
links, checklists, videos and more. New
this year is an e-book version of the
Emergency Preparedness Guide. Download a copy now for your e-reader so
you have this useful information at your
fingertips
Day 2: Sign up for Safety Tips. Public Safety Canada emails monthly safety tips about emergency preparedness
to subscribers. Theyre also posted on
GetPrepared.ca. Already signed up?
Send safety tip sign-up information to
a friend!
Day 3: Check out your supplies at
home. Do you have a flashlight? Extra
batteries? Have a look at our emergency

kit list, and pick up a few more supplies or a container to keep them in one
place. Trying to find a flashlight in the
dark during a power outage is not exactly fun!
Day 4: Talk to your kids about emergencies. Your kids might be wondering what youre up to as you assemble
emergency supplies. Take a few minutes and involve them in your planning.
Talk to children about different kinds
of emergencies, show them our videos,
and get the conversation going.
Day 5: Check out the Canadian Disaster Database. Want to know what disasters have happened in your region over
the years? Knowing what can happen is
a good first step to preparedness.
Day 6: Make a Plan. It takes only a
few minutes, but can bring peace of
mind. What would you do if theres
an emergency in your neighbourhood
and your family isnt together? Where
will you meet if your cell phones dont
work? You can complete a plan online
at GetPrepared.ca.
Day 7: Spread the word! Follow us on
Twitter to stay connected throughout
the year, and share our videos with your
family and friends.
And finally, give yourself a pat on the
back. You just took some quick and
easy--but very important--steps to being
more prepared. And you helped make
Canadas 18th Emergency Preparedness
Week a success!
This tip has been brought to you by

SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Staff Sgt. Kevin Reilly presented stats from the

last quarter to town council earlier this year. In
his report he outlined some of the areas the detachment has been focusing on, which areas need
improvement, and which did well over the last
quarter.
In January there was the homicide of Brenda
Walker; Reilly outlined some of the police work
involved in processing the scene and determining
a suspect. This was the third homicide in the eight
years he has been in Strathmore.
Something Reilly said is concerning him, and
something that he plans to focus on over the next
coming months, is traffic violations.
Outside of the enhanced traffic shifts were
down about 20 per cent. Thats a concern of mine
and were going to be focusing on that because
that tells me that weve got to look at whether
were improving the traffic safety, or whether
were just not getting out on the road enough and
focusing on what we should be, said Reilly.
The Crime Reduction Unit with Cnst. Shannon
White have continued to work major files, and doing good work. Reilly said White has been active in
the schools, teaching internet safety to one class at
the high school, and to all students in Grade 7,8,9
at Holy Cross, and teaching the DARE program to
Grade 6 students throughout town.
The habitual offender program is still successful. Five offenders have moved out of the community, which Reilly thinks is due to the fact theyre
being checked on and monitored. He said there
is a working partnership with probation and the
courts to find out whos coming in to the town
and what conditions they may have. There are 11
habitual offenders being monitored.
White laid 21 criminal code charges in the last
few months. Notable investigations include one
where the detachment was notified there was a
person that could be living in the area wanted
on warrants. White investigated, found the person
and was able to execute the warrant and get him
incarcerated and sent back, to face fairly serious
charges, kidnapping, forcible confinement and assault.
Another major investigation White was involved
in started with an impaired driver that a nightshift
member found. Part way through the investigation
the officers found there was a possible chance of
impersonating a police officer.
The suspect was travelling through the area
from Saskatchewan to BC but had a number of
police officer items. The officers obtained a search
warrant, seized the items and had the suspect remanded into custody.

403.934.4957

Reilly said it was major investigation because it

involved a domestic situation in BC at two different detachments and the suspect was subsequently escorted back to BC to face those charges out
there.
Regarding complaints on Facebook about break
and enters in town Reilly said, It wasnt a horrible rash of 20 or 30 where Ive seen in a number of different communities that I have worked
in. There were approximately six or seven. We
were able to identify suspects and two males were
charged and multiple charges were laid against
them for those.
In February there were a number of vehicle
thefts. Officers were able to investigate, work with
the businesses, identify the suspect and also multiple charges where laid again.
Earlier this year a 14-year-old at risk youth was
reported missing.
Sometimes when youth go missing, they dont
want to be found, and that was the case in this
situation. Initially the members on the watch were
working that file, but it became too intensive and
I got Shannon and Clint involved, both our crew
member and our GIS member, said Reilly.
He said the two worked extensively on the case
with partners in K Division, in the missing persons unit. Reilly said a number of organizations
were involved across the country, and a bulletin
was released across Canada.
Two and a half months later, thanks to good
police work, the missing teen was safely located
and returned home. Reilly said it was the good
investigative steps that the two officers put in that
lead to finding the girl.

Sykamore attends
Discovery Week
SHANNON LECLAIR
Times Reporter

Jordan Ostrom, known to her fans as
Sykamore, is off to Toronto to take part
in the Canadian Country Music Associations (CCMA) Discovery Week. The
program, which began in 2013, is a national initiative that was created to educate and support artists in their country
music career pursuit.
Ostrom made it into the final six this
year and is currently taking part in
seminars to learn more about radio, social media and team building.
Just a whole bunch of really great
tools to polish you as a performer and
push you forward in the industry - and
then at the end of it all - you get to
showcase for a bunch of industry people, said Ostrom.
It basically just helps shine a spot-

light on you as an artist and helps you

learn how to how to carry yourself.
In September she will be flown to
Halifax for the CCMA awards, and will
get a chance to showcase herself there.
There will be a three hour showcase
held on the 10th, curing Country Music
Week, where the six acts will be spotlighted. Each will have a full concert
production, will be backed by a house
band, and will have a chance to perform in front of people in the music industry and fans.
During the awards one act will be
chosen to receive the Discovery Award.
The winner will receive funding to help
with a music video, courtesy of CMT
Canada, a performance spotlight on the
2016 CMA Music Festival Global Party
showcase in Nashville, and other industry related prizes.

2% strychnine almost ready

for pick up
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Wheatland County has approved the
pricing of the two per cent strychnine
spray for agriculture at $216 per case or
$9 a bottle.
The sales will end on June 26 and the
purchase limit is three cases per person, per visit.
Its for rodent control and weve
done that for years and years, said
Alan Parkin, Wheatland Countys Chief
Administrative Officer. Farmers can
come in and purchase it for $216 per
case and we disperse it through our Ag
services board and we have a set time
where they can purchase that.
Parkin added that the county is waiting on a shipment
We dont have any in stock as of yet,

were waiting for the supplier to deliver it and then it will be posted on our
website, said Parkin. People will need
to phone ahead, well have it ready, and
then they come down and pay, then
come pick it up.
The liquid strychnine is necessary because the product will prevent further
rodent damage on agricultural land.
Rodents such as ground squirrels or
gophers do a lot of damage to pasture
lands. Its a service we like to provide
and get a fair few people that utilize
that service, said Parkin. Usually
April/May is the best time to use that
product because there is not a lot for
the rodents to eat right now, theyre
more prone to going after the liquid
strychnine.
The liquid strychnine is usually used
when the grass gets greener.

SHS rugby on the uprise

JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

The Strathmore High School rugby teams are
showing signs of improvement on the field, but
there is still work to be done as the season goes on.
Were not pleased weve lost three games. Its
difficult to take, but the opposition has some pretty strong teams. We have to play smart, controlled
rugby and keep control of the ball and should be
able to score, said head coach Brad Steele. We
need to control our ball in contact, were (weaning)
the ball out of the scrums and set plays. If we can
keep the ball and win our rucks, well score tries.
Steele believes his team is getting better every
game.
The new players are figuring it out and other
ones are stepping it up, were just half way through
and hopefully well improve, said Steele.
Girls head coach Jerry Flaws admits that his team
still needs to gain confidence on the field.
We need them a little more involved because
theyre not sure and wont commit, said Flaws. I

think we move the ball really well. When we do

have the ball, we keep control of it fairly well but
we dont play good defense yet.
However, there are other areas where practice
time is needed.
We just need to clean up our passes, we need
more ball times practices. Right now were spending time on defense and offense, all of our practices
have been positioning, so we have to get to the
fundamentals now, said Flaws.
The girls made the trip to Smith Falls, Ont., from
April 23-28 and Flaws is hoping the trip will further
enhance the players.
Well be working with the university coaches
while were down there, so theyll get some good
exposure to rugby, said Flaws. I know Smith Falls
was a little worried from our provincial results last
year. We can be that team but we got to work at it
together to get back there.
It has been noticed by many that SHSs field is
hard and has caused injuries. The athletics department is looking for the school division to make improvements to the chewed up surface.

JUSTIN SEWARD

Times Reporter

The UFA Bisons defied all odds this season by
making it to the Telus Cup.
No one predicted them to eliminate the top teams
in the post season en route to receiving a berth in
the national championship.
Head coach Dan MacDonald praised his 20 players
for believing in one another after a slow start to the
season.
When you look at the progress our team made,
we were seventh place in the league at the end of
November. We steadily got better each month, so in
our case being a first time Bison team to ever get this
far, its a good start, said MacDonald.
We think we can do better yet as we move forward, but you have to have that process where you
succeed and the next group comes in and says we
can get there and be better yet and they believe they
have a chance.
MacDonald highlights the winning streak and the
role they went on through the post season as memorable moments in this campaign.
I thought it was outstanding that we won 12 in
a row in January and February (considering) in November we went 3-7, said MacDonald.
When we rolled through Calgary in the playoffs,
we won every round in two straight, three straight
and three straight, that was a real accomplishment
for our hockey team.
The coaching staff have been proud of this group
for awhile and what they have been able to accomplish.
Weve been proud of them for a long time, the
way we regrouped after Christmas, the players took
it upon themselves to be good and they really dug
in, said MacDonald.
He could not say enough about the overwhelming
support they received from their growing fan base.
That was really something, what we tell the players is if you want attention, (you have to) succeed
and they gave us a lot of attention, it was really
heartwarming, touching and appreciative, said MacDonald.
Local Shane Fraser could not have been more honoured to captain such a special group this season.
Its a pretty proud feeling. Its not just me, its every person in that room that has contributed to the
successes of this team, hats off to everyone in there,
said Fraser.
Everyone knows what it takes to be champions
and we all know we can (have) future success.
Frasers season highlight was getting to the Telus
Cup and reaching the medal round.

Bisons take part in National Championship

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The UFA Bisons wrapped up their

fantastic 2014-2015 season with a berth
in the national championship, the Telus
Cup, April 20-26 in Rivire-du-Loup,
Que.
The local triple-A midget team capped
off the round robin portion of the tournament with a 3-2 record, qualifying for
the playoffs. Here is a summary for each
contest the Bisons played in (Games
1&2 appeared in last weeks issue of the
Strathmore Times).
TELUS CUP
GAME 3
(APRIL 22):
UFA BISONS
VS.
REGINA PAT
CANADIANS
A day after
coming off of
a convincing
win over the
host team, the UFA Bisons knew they
were up against a perennial powerhouse in the Regina Pat Canadians.

The Pats made the Bisons pay for

their penalties and found the back
of the net three times on special
teams, en route to a 4-2 win.
Assistant coach Doug Raycroft
liked the start but admits the penalties prevented the team from
having any momentum in the
game.
I think we started really well in
the first period. We had eight minutes in penalties we had to kill in the
first and that really wrecked our flow,
said Raycroft. The second period was
pretty decent again. In the third period
we got into penalty trouble again
and they got three power play
goals on us and that was the difference in the game.
Austin Wong and Barrett Sheen
scored in their second defeat of
the tournament.
TELUS CUP GAME 4
(APRIL 23): UFA BISONS
VS. NEWBRIDGE ACADEMY
GLADIATORS
The UFA Bisons once again showed
that they have a short-term memory
when it comes to defeats in the Telus Cup

Gladiators.
I think
w e v e
been real
resilient
this way all year. Weve always had the
ability to bounce back and refocus ourselves, said assistant coach Sandy Henry.
Forward Zachary Vinnell felt that they
went back to the Bison brand of hockey
that made them successful all year long.
We just stuck to the game plan and
played our type of hockey, said Vinnell. Thats fast-moving hockey, getting
dirty, and thats how we got it done.
Vinnell notched a goal and two assists, while Austin Cameron, Trygve
Many Guns, Kyle Gordon, Markus Lavallee and Gary Haden supplied one each.
TELUS CUP GAME
5 (APRIL 24):
UFA BISONS VS.
TORONTO YOUNG
NATIONALS
Netminder Cody
Campbell was glad
to get some game
action and did very
well as he turned
away 40 of 43 shots
in a Bisons 5-3 win
in the final round
robin game.
It was just fantastic, Ive been waiting
a pretty long time and was nice to get
in there, especially when the team plays
like that in front of me, said Campbell.
It really gives me a chance to shine and
when everybody plays like we play.
Assistant coach Dave Atwood believed it was beneficial to have the early
game so the players can have the day to
rest-up for the semifinal.
The games early in the morning so
thats good for our team because now
we have a whole day to rest for tomorrow, said Atwood. It was good for us
to come in and get a win and to feel
good about ourselves so when we play
in that semi-final tomorrow were going
in on a high.
Cole Noble, Jordan McConnell, Gary
Haden, Zachary Vinnell and Will Conley
scored for the
Bisons.
TELUS CUP
SEMIFINAL
(APRIL 25):
UFA BISONS
VS. GRANDIERS DE
CHATEAUGUAY
The Herd was
looking to get

redemption on the Quebec representatives at the semifinals at the Telus Cup.

Unfortunately, it just was not meant to
be for the Bisons as they fell 7-1.
Head coach Dan MacDonald admits it
was not their day and they got beat by a
better opponent.
The other team was exceptional,
thats the best midget team Ive witnessed and Ive been here five times.
The way they move, skate and handle
themselves, we werent a match for
them today, said MacDonald. Thats
what happens when you go nationals,
you run into players that you havent
seen before and are going to go to the
NHL.
The Grandiers seemed to have underrated offense the whole tournament
and came out explosive with an output
the Bisons could not match.
They had urgency that was beyond
what they showed us before, said MacDonald. I guess when you have that
kind of talent you suck it up and a way
you go.
Captain Shane Fraser
scored a shorthanded tally
for the Bisons.
TELUS CUP BRONZE
MEDAL GAME
(APRIL 26):
UFA BISONS VS.
REGINA PAT
CANADIANS
The UFA Bisons did not
end the Telus Cup like
they had hoped, as they
watch the Regina Pat Canadians capture the bronze with a 6-3
victory.
Despite all that a side, the team should
be proud
of placing fourth
out
of
142 teams
teams.
T h e
fact that
you get
here is a
real major
accomplishment. Its
so hard to get here and then you find
out how good you have to be when you
get here, said MacDonald.
Captian Shane Fraser could not be
any happier to have captained this special group
to this tournament.
Its still pretty disappointing not getting a
medal in the tournament but Im still pretty
proud of everyone in the
room, said Fraser.
Davis Sheldon scored
two while Josh Bishop
added one for the Bisons.

Crnkovic made steps towards elite status

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Wheatland Braves forward Kyle

Cranky Crnkovic scorched through
the peewee double A season with a 156
points (96 goals and 60 assists) but the
13-year-old is a classy individual who
wanted to make his line mates around
him better.
He was not a selfish player by any
means but took advantage of his opportunities when he could.
My teammates really helped me out,
theyre a really big part of my success
and my coaches also help it all happen,
said Crnkovic. You dont go very far if
its individual, it has to be a team effort
and one guy cant carry a team.
His coach, Keith Klemmensen, made
him understand how hard work will
pay off in the long run.
Its been good, Keiths really taught
me how to work hard and I think thats
really helped me, said Crnkovic. You

just got to keep trying and eventually

it will happen. I thought my line (Max
Kathol, Bryce Benfield), worked together and tried our best.
They just sometimes when theyre
on the wall with a d-man on them and
(they) found a way to get that puck out.
In the offensive zone, they were really
good at cycling.
What may have made him the most
effective all-around player was his approach each game on and off the ice
I try to do everything fast so when a
game comes thats what is going to happen, said Crnkovic.
The leadership qualities that Cranky
possessed were outstanding the whole
season and that is why his team looked
up to him.
I tried to be a leader for the younger
guys. I just tried to be that guy that does
everything hard, said Crnkovic.
Klemmensen felt privileged to have a
player as dedicated as Crnkovic was this
past season.

Wheatland Braves sniper Kyle Crnkovic made players around him better throughout this past season
and gained elite-status for a 13 year old.
Justin Seward Photo

Cranky has a hockey ability that is

rare, yet he is open to instruction and
ideas. He is totally a team guy and he
is modest, said Klemmensen. He earns
respect as a hockey player and also as
a grounded young man. Anyone who

thinks they are good should act like

him.
Cranky hopes to make the bantam triple A Raiders in Okotoks next season;
if that doesnt happen he plans to play
with the Wheatland Warriors.

Hammond thrilled to be playing

at Alberta Challenge
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Rocky Mountain Bantam

triple A female Raider defensemen Karissa Hammond
was thrilled to have her
named called to represent
the South Lightning team at
the 2015 Alberta Challenge.
I jumped to the phone
because I was excited, said
Hammond. Everyone was
texting each other and seeing if they got a call.
She is looking forward to
having that familiarity behind the bench to help her
along throughout the tournament.
It feels pretty good going in, knowing that I get
my assistant coach (BobbiJo Slusar), she knows who
I am and how I play, said
Hammond.
The Strathmore native
said what made the camp
better was the fact her Raider teammates were pushing
her out on the ice.
It was nice to be back

on the ice with them, even

playing against them, you
just pushed harder against
them because you know
they can take it, said Hammond.
She said the difference between playing for the Raiders and the Alberta Challenge are the different skill
levels coming to the tournament.
There a lot of different
ranged people like minor
hockey, triple A, double-A
kind of players. Some of the
players werent as good, but
they didnt have the ability as other players, said
Hammond. Even when you
passed, some players would
pass too hard, because itd
just go off your sticks because they couldnt handle
it, whereas when I played
with the Raiders where
they were stronger on their
sticks and could handle the
passes.
The Alberta Challenge
will take place from April
29 to May 3 in Medicine Hat.

The Crowther Memorial Junior High

School badminton teams saw tremendous success during counties on April
22.
At the juvenile level, Crowther Memorial showed well, taking 10 of 15
ribbons, said Brad Huntley, Crowthers
badminton coordinator. At the midget
level, Crowther took 12 of 15 ribbons
and at the bantam level, we took 13 of
15 ribbons,
Huntley was impressed with the
sportsmanship and hard work that the
groups displayed.
All day they showed a high level
of skill and sportsmanship and their
coaches are very proud of them, said
Huntley.
He admired how the athletes were
able to come together in such a short
time.

These athletes had very little time to

make the team, practice, gel with their
partners, and then excel at the county
competition, said Huntley. Although,
their court time was limited these athletes took advantage where they could.
Many would show up at optional practice times, like lunch and early morning
practices.
The coaches were hopeful that the
players had fun throughout the tournament.
Our goal, as coaches, for our players
in the county tournament was twofold.
Primarily, we want all our kids to really enjoy playing in the tournament,
said Huntley. We wanted our players
to experience a little more game pressure and a more anxious playing environment.
Overall, the onus was on the players
to find a rhythm and they lived up individual skill sets without a lot of the
coaches help.

The Standard School badminton team

showed great work ethic during school
badminton counties on April 22 at Holy
Cross Collegiate and Strathmore High
Schools.
Coach Ed Yu was encouraged by
what he saw from his players on the
court.
It was nice to see our players improve the fundamentals. It was encouraging to hear from the players that
some shots they practiced were successful in their games, said Yu.
He admits that the layout of Standards gym limited what shots the players could practice before the competition.
Our gym has a very low ceiling
which makes it difficult to practice

properly. The players did quite well

considering that they did not practice
the clears and lifts in a regular ceiling
gym, said Yu.
Yu was quite impressed with the
sportsmanship that was shown throughout the tournament.
It was also encouraging to see
healthy competition with respectful
sportsmanship. At any level, sportsmanship is necessary but especially at
this level where our main goal is participation and experience, said Yu.
The team also had respectable finishes in both singles and doubles categories.
I was very happy with our teams results. Dusty Hamelin and Neav Sharply
won Grade 9 mixed doubles while Erica-Lynn Skibsted and Jessica Clyne won
Grade 9 girls doubles and Christie Fike
came 4th in girls singles, said Yu.
