Council approved the first phase of North Hill Heights on July 5, at the Town of Strathmore Council meeting. The proposal by Pat Maloney and Associates/Skyscape Management Inc. is a 142.50 acre, nine phase development located north of Hillview and east of Wheatland Trail (SE27-24-25-W4M), previously designated as agricultural land. The overall goal for the North Hill Heights community is to create a comprehensive, planned, residential enclave that will provide a walkable, healthy and attractive area in the Town of Strathmore, said Pat Maloney, spokesperson for the development. The development contains mixed housing and high density residential, phasing into commercial sites with living suites above the commercial units. There will be increased housing for 2800 people. The first phase would be located in the SW corner of the plan, bordering the WID canal and North Boundary Road. It would have 100 low-density units, including a storm pond. Services for the first phase will be in place before development and additional phases will not be started until servicing is completed for each additional phase. There were some concerns presented by council and staff that were addressed in the plan. The WID borders the development and required 20 m setback and access to the canal. Once developers agreed that this was in place, WID endorsed the project. Alberta Transportation required an updated 20-year plan that addresses the traffic issues in each phase, until the new Hwy 1 is in place and the developer agreed to supply the TIA. ATCO gas needed 18 months to provide services to the area. Golden Hills School Division questioned that there were no schools designated for the area. I have had several meetings with the staff at GHSD. It is really tough to find a suitable site for a school, said Dwight Stanford, who said the school division has specific guidelines for school development. Continued on Page 2

Carol Coutts took a gander at The Forest art exhibit while she was at the Strathmore Municipal Library on July 10.

Art at the library

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Once again patrons of the Strathmore Municipal Library can peruse art that is on display. The exhibit, named The Forest, will be on display until August 15. Over 140 artists from across Alberta submitted their work for consideration for exhibition. From there the Alberta Society of Artists selected 13 works and artists to participate in the Travelling Exhibition Program. It gives a great opportunity for smaller communities such as Strathmore to be able to bring different art from artists around the province to our community, said Carmen Erison, Assistant Director of Library Services with the Strathmore Municipal Library. Along with displaying local artists works, the library has been hosting three art exhibits a year for the last few years. Erison said its neat to be able to display such quality work in the com-

munity and feels theres no better place then the library. We feel the library is a good place to exhibit art. (Its) a nice quiet place to enjoy, (to) read a book and see some great art while youre here, said Erison. We love to exhibit local artists work, thats part of our mandate is to really support our local artists. We also invite local artists to come and exhibit their art if they want. Here you can walk into your local library for free and view just as good of art as you would see in the Glenbow thats whats kind of cool about it. Once a year the Strathmore Municipal Library is given a catalogue to go through, and to see what exhibits are available to be brought in. Unfortunately none of the work is available for purchase. The exhibit, however, is free. People are welcome to stop into the library and see it as many times as they would like.

New development approved

Continued from Page 1 Alberta Health Services wanted assurances that the drinking water and sewage systems were hooked up to the municipal lines and that an environmental study be completed. There were sewage disposal concerns that were addressed with a 24-hour sewage-holding tank and lift system, which would flush into the regular system. A temporary connection to Hillview water system would be done for the first phase. An Environmental plan was completed, with a Master Servicing Study forthcoming. Mayor Steve Grajczyk questioned if the pathways aligned with the existing pathway system. The development has a pathway that would hook up with Strathmores existing path system when the town completed the pathway section south of the development in Hillview. Councillor Pat Fule questioned that the commercial area would box in the Lutheran Church that was proposed for that area. The developers said the church had agreed to trade land for an alternate suitable building site. Councillor Earl Best went on record disagreeing with the reduced 32 ft. lot sizes and that the housing prices do not reflect the smaller lot. The developer clarified that the same services are needed no matter what the lot size was. I have been opposed to the smaller lots from the beginning, said Best. I am not so much opposed to the smaller lot size as I am to the parking space, said Councillor Rocky Blockland, about the walkable community. The developer noted that two street front parking spaces were designated and rear drives were a part of the development, to address parking issues. With concerns addressed by the developer and all proper development requirements in place, the first phase of North Hill Heights was given the go ahead. There were no questions or concerns presented at the meeting by the public.

BBQ party at Kinsmen Park almost here

Shannon LecLair Times Reporter Last month Strathmore was awarded one of the secondary prizes from the Presidents Choice (PC) BBQTown Contest. On July 14 the tour will be stopping in Strathmore and setting up a free BBQ party for up to 2,000 people. It will be first come, first serve but there should be plenty for everyone interested in attending. The BBQ partygoers will get to sample some of the newest Presidents Choice items, from snacks to refreshments and of course the best BBQ grill items. The bright pink PC ice cream shop truck will also be there to help keep people cool. On top of all of the food, there will be plenty of entertainment, too. There will be face painting, stilt walkers, balloon animal artists and even a fire juggler. Everything is going to be held at Kinsmen Park from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. and its sure to be fun for the whole family.

Strathmore Chamber expands office

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Representatives from the Strathmore Chamber of Commerce asked for a $40,000 loan to upgrade a potential lease space available in Country Lane Mall. The Chamber would share the office space with Jason Hale, Wildrose Party Member of the Legislature, and would apply to be the Visitor information Centre for the area. We see it as a creative and innovative contribution to Strathmore businesses, said President Debbie Wakelam. The office would occupy the front half of the old Prairie Saddlery store. The Chamber had money for the lease but the space needed to be redesigned for an office setup. They proposed that the Town would be half partners in the enterprise and the other half of the loan would be paid at $4,000 yearly on a no interest basis. Hale would be paying rent on a sublease basis. The Chamber currently has 117 paid members and hosts regular business network meetings. They were confident that membership would continue to grow. Councillor Bob Sobal questioned whether sharing the space with Hale constituted a political partisanship. Wakelam noted that the office would be open to all constituents no matter what their party affiliation. Wakelam said the Chamber chose the site because of its access to the highway, good parking and its prime real estate value. Councillor Best commented that as a visitor information centre, access was not as direct as it would be if it were situated right along the highway. Councillor Pat Fule had concerns that the Chamber was vacating a space they held in the downtown area, when vacancy rates in the downtown were high. He was concerned about what message the move would be sending to other potential businesses. Mayor Steve Grajczyk requested that the Chamber bring a strict budget back to the council and they would give them a decision by the July 18 council meeting.

Heavy vehicles denied parking

Sharon McLeay Times Contributor Council passed revisions to Bylaw #12-15, which bans heavy vehicles from parking along truck routes where No Heavy Vehicle Parking signs are posted. In this particular case, East Lake Boulevard, now called Centennial Drive, will have No Heavy Vehicle Parking signs posted. There was some confusion in the past that the bylaw meant there would be no parking at all for heavy vehicles on the truck routes around town. This revision clarifies that parking is not allowed only if the signs prohibiting it are in place, said Jennifer Sawatzky, Municipal Clerk. Area residents have been concerned about semi-trucks and trailers parking overnight on Centennial Drive. They had concerns about early morning noise and safety issues. The town recently tore down a barrier fence along the drive allowing easier access, sight lines and noise levels to the houses bordering the road. There was some discussion whether this would call into question heavy vehicle parking on other roads along the truck routes within the Town of Strathmore.

Show and Shine just around the corner

Jenna caMpbeLL Times Contributor Calling all gear-heads and car enthusiasts! The Strathmore Fun Runners will be presenting their 19th annual Show and Shine, July 20-21. Drivers can begin showing off their cars Friday at 5:30 p.m. on a cruise throughout the town. The route will be making several stops including at the Strathmore Lodge Nursing Home and the Strathmore General Hospital. The ride will end on 2nd Avenue where a small show and shine will be taking place. Todd Blakney, owner of Muscle Motors and member of the Strathmore Fun Runners, thinks that this year will be different in the sense that more downtown business owners are taking an interest, and will be open later to accommodate guests and participants. On Saturday, the Show and Shine will begin at 10 a.m. and continue to 4 p.m. Events throughout the day will include kids games, door prizes, beer gardens and live music. This years novelty raffle item will be a 50s fashioned gas pump. For 19 consecutive years and going strong, classic vehicles have been showcased throughout Kinsmen Park. Looking back, Blakney said the event started simply after finding interest and supporters from Strathmore and the area. It started with myself and another friend Stan Ulm, both gear heads, and liked the idea of going to other peoples shows and thought, whats stopping us from doing something in Strathmore, and really thats what it started with. The two began handing out flyers and organized a meeting which resulted in great response. That very first meeting generated more people than the number of members we currently have today. 50 people showed up to that meeting, thats really how it started, we werent the only two guys with cars. After 19 years, Blakney said it can be disheartening at times when the number of participants can stay between the 250-300 range. A large reason can be accounted to the fact that four other car shows will be taking place that weekend, including a larger venue in Calgary. Blakney stated that if people do not need to leave the city, they wont. Im always positive, I always like to see double the amount of cars, but after a while, theres probably nothing we are doing wrong, maybe theres more we could be doing advertising wise, but at the end of the day, its the response of the people. In the 19 years we have had a lot of the same people coming back that have been there right from day one and thats kind of cool, getting to see those people year after year. Blakney really wanted to emphasize the Friday evening cruise and mini show and shine, something that a lot of other shows do not offer. Some people come to Strathmore for a whole different reason, there are people who have no interest in show and shines but would rather go to an event where they can drive their car. A number of people mention that theyd rather take a tour trip than being parked for four to five hours, waiting for the day to end. As a new member of Strathmores Fun Runners, Joel Blakney will be showcasing his 1968 Pontiac GTO, which received a lot of attention at the recent World of Wheels in Calgary, Feb 17-19. Gearing up for the upcoming show and shine, Blakney said all he needs to do is have it ready and be there on time. I just turned into a member this year because I didnt have a car, so now Im a member and Ive been helping with the show for a number of years, said Joel. Being around the show and shine for a large portion of his life, Blakney stated he will most likely be helping out in the years to follow. Hopefully its a good show, hopefully there are a lot of cars and its a good turnout.

Kicking off Stampede with a hearty breakfast

Jenna Campbell Times Contributor The Siksika Health & Wellness Centre hosted their annual Stampede Kick-off Breakfast this past Thursday, July 5. They have held the breakfast for a number of years longer than Ive been here, and Ive been here for nine years, added Sandra Sparvier, the Healthy Promotion Liaison for the Siksika Health & Wellness Centre. The last six years I have been organizing it with the head dietician. We organize it with herself, myself, and the fire chief (Tom Little Chief), said Sparvier. Beginning at an early six a.m., the Siksika fire department began prep work for the breakfast. The Health & Wellness Centre offered enough food to fill over 650 plates. This year was 600, last year was 500, the year before that it was 300. I didnt do much advertising for this one here, I just put a notice in the newsletter. I didnt put any posters up, I didnt email anybody, I just wanted to see if it was word of mouth and how it would go, and look at the crowd, said Sparvier. Chief Fred Rabbit Carrier remembered the early stages and stated that the event had really grown. Its always a function we look forward to every year and its put on about the same time, it really brings out the spirit for the Stampede. Its such a beautiful day today, and the feeling of closeness, for us its a gathering you dont quite get to see so often but unfortunately these things are out of our control, but it is a good feeling to meet with people and converse with others, like grandparents, cousins, said Rabbit Carrier. Other events throughout the morning included face painting, horseback riding, a two step competition for four tickets to the Stampede chuck wagon finals, live music from Richard Running Rabbit whom Janice Doore, The Chief and Council of the Siksika Health & Wellness Centre, described as being a role model for our community. From having such an event each year, Sparvier said the Siksika Health & Wellness Centres goal is to promote healthy eating. Thats why we had fruit and yogurt, we tried to get all of the protein and carbohydrates. We only do a certain amount of pancakes, if we run out, we run out, but we make sure we have our fruits, everyone else does bacon and sausage, the ham is a healthier choice, its as high in sodium as bacon and sausage but its less greasy and a lot leaner, said Sparvier. Sparvier also mentioned that the Health & Wellness Centre is now offering a program to Siksika youth which teaches kids how to eat to eat healthy and how to properly exercise. We advertise in our newsletter for them to contact their physicians and get the physician to contact the community health nurse. We also have a diabetic educator, because aboriginals have a high incidence of diabetes, said Sparvier. The Siksika Health & Wellness Centre offer numerous services. The centre carries a newly installed ultrasound system, has a top of the line x-ray lab, they offer breast mammogram exams twice a year and retinography eye exams for people with diabetes, to name a few. The centre has a dedicated staff who work towards better health outcomes for the community of Siksika. Were considered in Canada as a model for being able to provide, we have different partnerships, like with the University of Calgary where they have their nurses come in, and there is so much activity. We work with surrounding areas and people are coming in more and more, said Doore.

Making a plunge for the Wheatland County Foodbank

Jenna Campbell Times Contributor Ten courageous individuals splashed into the icy cold waters in the second annual Dunk Tank Event. The Canada Day festivities were organized by Jennifer Sawatzky, the Municipal Clerk for the Town of Strathmore, and the event took place at Kinsmen Park, July 1. I went about asking a couple people who I thought would be more well known in the community, and would be people that that other individuals would like to see dunked, said Strathmore Town Councillor, Bob Sobol. From being a dunk tank participant the previous year, Sobol thought that 10 participants would be a needed. About a 25 minute spell is about all that I think anybody should take, it was a little longer last year so I tried to split it in half hour intervals. The dunk tank succeeded with $594.90 as the grand total of funds raised. The money will be donated to the Wheatland County Foodbank. It was incredible; I dont think we ever did not have someone in line waiting to shoot. It was an enormous amount of fun, there was so much laughter and surprises. We had grown people who on their first shot, threw clear over the target, and we had one nine year old and of the 20 shots he purchased, I believe he dunked 16 people. He was an incredibly accurate and strong little gentleman. It was a lot of fun, a great time. The cake decorating auction proved to be a success as well, pulling in over $1,515 as the grand total of money raised. Funds will also be donated to the Wheatland County Foodbank, and a cheque will be presented with a combined total of $2,109.90 in the near future. The cake auction has a long history with Canada Day and it was taking place even prior to myself getting on the council. Basically, well known persons such as representatives from the fire department, ambulance and town council, all took turns at the event. They either have some ingredients present or they bring their own, decorate a cake and the cake is auctioned, whoever gets the highest bid takes the cake home. Sobol said the decorating time frame is around three minutes, making the event like a contest to see who can complete the challenge. Sobol was at the dunk tank for a large portion and didnt get a chance to witness the cake decorating event. However, in regards to the dunk tank, Sobol described the event as a little bit busier than we anticipated, and we were happy to see the people responding so well.

For Mike: a lost student

Pat Fule Fule for Thought As a teacher, Ive always tried to treat kids with respect and a sense of humour. Oh sure, sometimes the students may make it a bit harder to do that, but you try anyway. Mike was not one of those students, he had qualities that set him apart from others. There was something in him, that seemed to make him more mature, more sincere than a typical teenager. For about the first 12 years of my high school teaching, I was also the Sr. Boys Basketball coach. Early on, Mike played for us when were still at Samuel Crowther High School (which is now Holy Cross/ Sacred Heart Schools). I couldnt have asked for a better team player than Mike. He worked himself from being on the bench a lot as a rookie, to someone I could easily sub in when we needed intelligence and a spark. He was also one of the most coachable players Ive ever had. If I told him what we needed, hed try and deliver if I offered some constructive criticism, hed use it to try and improve. He also did whatever a coach asked. There was one humorous situation at a tournament in Hanna. Mikes effort and skill led him to playing some solid minutes. At our team huddle, I pointed out one of our opponents to Mike. You see that guy, Mike? I want you to stay with him were in full-court man, so wherever he goes, you go! You stay RIGHT with him, got it? Mike always had a positive attitude, and responded with something like, no problem, coach. We broke the huddle and Mike raced over to the other teams bench. He was ready to guard this kid, no matter what. Mike was focused, and stood waiting, right in front of the opponent. The player sat down! Mike waited some more seconds, then with a scratch of his head, realized the player had subbed OUT! We all laughed, Mike was able to find his new check quickly, and he wound up playing a very strong game. Mike was a good looking kid with great athletic abilities. But he didnt let these things take him over. Because of that, he was level-headed and he looked out for other students. He would never tease anyone else, and he probably did have opportunities to do that. He was just good to people, and he was respected for his kindness, as well as his intelligence. On one of the last road trips of the season, Deb and I wound up taking home a few of the Strathmore kids. I remember we were coming up to the hill that drops into Strathmore. Mike was sleeping in the back seat, and Debbie had just looked back. Im not sure if it was the lights, or the snow falling, but Debbie said, Look at Mike, he looks just like a little angel there. I turned the inside mirror to see, and saw that the lights made Mikes face and hair look like they were glowing! Mike had applied for the World Youth College Program. It is a rigorous academic system, where only strong academic students are chosen. About three weeks after the season, Mike was driving home from Calgary and a dinner with his parents. I think it was to be a celebratory dinner. The snow was really falling, and blowing that night. Deb and I had gone home to Canmore for the weekend, but one of my colleagues had reached me there. There had been an accident, and Mikes car was hit by a large truck on the single lane Chestermere Highway. He did not survive the accident. I almost dropped the phone. I hung it up slowly and gave the news to Deb. She broke into tears, and I sat stunned, trying to take it all in. He had so much potential, was such a good kid, and now, right now, he was gone from here. School was very somber that week, and most of the kids were in shock. Obviously, his friends and family were devastated. The thing that hit me as well, was that Mikes mother and grandfather were also quite ill. Their sickness had to be handled, as well as the grieving for Mike. I didnt know HOW a family could be expected to carry on, but they did. The funeral was terribly sad. The thing about almost all teachers I know, is that we feel with you, and your kids. If they celebrate, we may be able to join you. If you grieve, we also feel a loss. As a new teacher, I found this out, as many young eyes kept turning back to Deb and me. We cried through the service for the loss of a young man, who had so much promise for a happy future. It would be a long time before I would feel like laughing, or even smiling again. In Mikes short life, he had taught me some strong lessons about how to treat people, about humility, and kindness to others. He had been strong and mature with his friendships, and he treated people well. I havent forgotten Mike, and for as long as I coached the Sr. Boys team, our home tournament carried Mikes name. It was my way of trying to keep him with the school, as long as I could. Sometimes, like today, a person remembers the past and tries to also remember a lost one.

Thought for the week ~

Delivering jobs, growth and long-term prosperity here at home

Kevin SorenSon, M.P., Crowfoot Parliamentary Report I hope everyone enjoyed celebrating Canada Day. It is always a busy time of year for me as your Member of Parliament and though I have only been home from Ottawa for a short time, I have already met with many constituents at local school graduations, official functions, municipal meetings, on parade routes, and more. I appreciate it when folks feel free to share their view with me on any issue that is important to them, no matter how little time we may have together. Before the House of Commons rose for the summer and with the passage of Bill C-38, Budget 2012, our Conservative government has focused our policies to work towards continuing to create jobs, growth and long-term prosperity. Following the Canada Day festivities where we reflect on Canadas achievements, our nation goes forward anticipating the work we will all be doing in the coming year. Hard working Canadians and their families have good reason to feel optimistic. Our countrys economic performance is admirable compared to many economies around the world. In fact, Canada had the best two-month job growth in over 30 years, in March and April 2012. The Canadian job creation record since July 2009 is nearly 760,000 net new jobs. This is encouraging news as we see Canadians able to continue with their careers, support their families and build for the future. My colleagues and I in Ottawa have built measures into Budget 2012 to serve Canadians where they live and work in their local economies across the nation. For example, we renewed the Hiring Credit for Small Business which continues to encourage the creation of new positions and new hires. We know that this measure is producing results. We are also investing to repair and improve existing infrastructure creating jobs while preserving the community centres, libraries, roads and other structures that benefit communities large and small. The Badlands Community Facility is a prime example of our efforts here in Crowfoot. Last week, I spoke at the Grand Opening of the Badlands Library project. The municipal government has the lead on this project committing just over $14 million. The federal and provincial government added $3 million each to get the job done. This facility will help promote literacy, while enhancing cultural activities such as visual and performing arts. It will provide opportunities for learning and skills development for residents in the community and surrounding areas. This stateof-the-art library provides cross-generational access to books and archival material, computer training and access to technology with dedicated spaces for youth and children. I look upon the investments that our three levels of government have made in this library as a longterm growth and long-term prosperity measure. Many citizens will use this facility over many years to come. I think of the youngsters in particular who will spend a great deal of time during their formative years in the library and of course, the adjacent recreational facilities. They will grow up and move on to their own work of building our local communities, our province, and our nation. It is important to give them a good start. I am proud that the Government of Canada is able to provide assistance in this kind of local effort. This is effective spending of our hard-earned tax dollars. Keeping the community safe

To the Editor One night last week, around 2:30 in the morning, an alarm goes off awakening me from a deep sleep. Thinking kids were out banging on hoods for a lark, I lumber around finding my keys to make sure it isnt my car waking the neighbours. It wasnt. The alarm was still ringing, from somewhere in the surrounding area. So thinking it may be a break-in at someones house, who might be away; I call 911. About 10-15 minutes later the RCMP phone and say they have swept the area and nothing looks suspicious. It is all too quiet out there now and the alarm has stopped. It is nice to know that in the dead of night, the RCMP responds quickly when you call them. It makes it easier to go back to sleep. Way to go guys and thanks for your dedication in protecting the community. Sharon McLeay, Strathmore

Partying in Alberta on a long weekend!

To the Editor I just read last weeks letter to the editor where is the town bylaw and had a good laugh from the writer ( July 6, Page 8). Come on lady, we are here in smalltown Alberta and were celebrating Canada Day and there was a rodeo on the weekend. With the weather weve been having lately, we had one good weekend until you prayed for rain. Just wait for the Heritage Days Rodeo - maybe you should get earplugs. Steve Burton, Strathmore

Oda approach to aid (and orange juice) un-Canadian

To the Editor In light of Minister Bev Odas resignation, many have commented on her record as a politician, a minister and an expert on expensive orange juice. However, what has been missing from this commentary is what has happened to our foreign aid under her watch. Under Ms. Oda, Canadas contribution to foreign aid has declined in absolute and percentage terms, and has moved away from aid for the poorest of the poor and towards countries that can offer political advantage. We are now spending $3.5 billion a year providing little to no help to those who need it most. In my eyes this is distinctly un-Canadian. There has been a longstanding belief in our country that aid should not be about whats in our interest, instead it is about doing the right thing and using our aid dollars the most effective way possible. Minister Oda and the Conservative Government had the opportunity over the past four years to do just that, and to make substantial contribution to the world. Instead they chose to use foreign aid to push their narrow-minded political and economic agenda. As Canadians, we trust our government to spend our money on worthy causes and meaningful initiatives. But its hard to make good spending decisions about the poorest of the poor when youre drinking orange juice at luxury hotels like the Savoy. Yours sincerely, John McKay, MP Liberal Party of Canada

War heros
Rachel RogeRs Times Contributor War impacts us all, even if you werent alive during the time of turmoil and destruction it has a great impact on everyones life. Just knowing that men went out and risked their lives for the future of our country is a beautiful thing. In March 2010, I went on a school trip to Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin and a few places in between that were impacted by both World Wars. It was a trip celebrating the 65th anniversary of the Victory in Europe. This experience is something I will remember for the rest of my life and influence how I live. We passed through many Canadian war cemeteries, including one Walter Natynczyk, the Chief of Defence spoke at and another Prime Minister Stephan Harper attended and addressed the crowd. The museums we went to also showed me so much insight into what was really happening during the war. I learned about what these brave men went through and had to do to survive and win. I know they did everything they could to keep Canada a free, democratic country. We visited Normandy and saw where the troops stormed Juno Beach for our freedom, I also found out here that not many lived this front and so many soldiers died and that the beaches water turned completely red. I took off my shoes and walked into this ice cold water just to say I could, so I could feel and be part of something. We also visited Vimy Ridge where Canada had defeated the Germans in one morning, something Britain and France were trying to do for two years. The underdogs came out victorious and were seen as our own country for the first time. These were some if the most influential moments in my life. Changed the way I look at things and how important is to not take for granted the little things, those little things are all that we have. To me what these soldiers did was extremely brave. They are heros. Two of my great uncles were among these great men and they both fought and died for our freedom. Ferdinand Rogers is buried in Bayeux, France and Clifford Rogers is in Groesbeek, Netherlands. I never had the privilege of meeting either of these men but they are close to my heart. My Grandfather, Walter Rogers who passed away last year fought in the Korean and Congo wars. I have wonderful memories of him and he too is my hero, he was an amazing man. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. - Head stone from Ireland.

Rosebuds new Executive Director plans to learn every aspect

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter July is here and for Rosebud Centre of the Arts, so is their new Executive Director Adam Furfaro. It took months of searching to find a replacement for former Executive Director Bob Davis, but after meeting Furfaro, Colin Jackson, chair for the centre of the arts, knew they had their man. Were just so pleased and proud of Rosebud that were pleased to find somebody who shares that passion for the culture of rural Alberta and we can play an even bigger role in the province of Alberta, said Jackson. We chose him because we thought, this is the guy that could catch that big picture and help take us to even higher level of in terms of what were offering and make us even more visible. Furfaro has done a little bit of everything in the theatre world, from acting, to writing, to directing to teaching. Both he and Jackson said its like his entire career has been leading up to this point. I think its going to be really important that I really get a much better feel for the arts community there, said Furfaro. It seems to be that Rosebud is the gem of an idea that has blossomed into this wonderful place of creativity and this wonderful place of imagination and people like to go there to find piece and find entertainment. So for me I need to spend a lot of time there and I need to spend time doing many different things. I want to spend the first couple of months Im there actually doing the job that everybody else is doing. I want to know what its like to work in a box office, I want to work in a kitchen, I want to be involved with teaching, and I want to take some classes. I want to see what everybody is doing and really immerse myself in every part of the organization because theres so much going on. Furfaros goal is to see Rosebud become more of a destination. He would like to see more festivals and things happening in the streets to make it a full day activity for people visiting Rosebud.

Four Strathmore and area artists were awarded ribbons in the Arts and Crafts show at the Calgary Stampede.

Ribbons in the Oasis

Sharon MCLeay Times Contributor There are four Strathmore ribbon winners in the Arts and Crafts show at the Calgary Stampede. The displays are in the Bank of Montreal centre and the area named the OASIS. An Oasis it is, as culture flanks a quiet wine garden surrounded by cool fountains, with soft music and cowboy poetry drifting through the air. Along the back wall, applicants creative endeavors are displayed in lighted showcases . Jenny Songhursts painting of an RCMP placed second. Marion Alward and Elaine Smiths crocheted dolls placed third. Alward also placed second with a childs sweater set. And Marlene Paisson came first with her pencil sketch of a sheep. Their works are displayed just down the aisle from one of the featured artists, who incorporated a local cowboy into his feature piece for the arts competition with SPIRIT OF THE WEST, 100 YEARS IN THE MAKING theme. He was hoping for a win. In 2011, he won Best New Artist in the show.

Michael Colin Perks, of Little Monkey Metal Works, hails from Okotoks. His medium is intricate metalwork cut with plasma and acetylene torches. His modern appeal made him the 2011 best upcoming Stampede artist. His tribute to the Centennial is a wild horse comprised of cut letters of the names of people that made great contributions to the development of the Stampede. The letters are intricate and individually welded into the shape. I put the names of prominent people from 1918 on, and not just the cowboys either. There are many who contributed to the Stampede, said Perks. He also has a wonderful sculpture, in a similar vein, of a wingspread goose. The words are all the patriotic reasons we are proud to be Canadian. Artists are selling their work in the Western Oasis. There is also an art auction on July 12, should any savvy collectors want to add to their home galleries. The gallery is worth a peek, even if you cant afford those beautiful treasures. There is a cooking gallery for those whose art rests in the palate. The Oasis gives a welcome cool and quiet place to relax away from the rush of the grounds.

Calling all movie lovers

Jenna CampbeLL Times Contributor Speargrass Golf Course is hosting its first annual Movie on the Range event on July 20, 2012. The outdoor movie, provided by the Canadian company, Movie in the Park is said to carry the ambiance of a retro drive-in movie theatre. The event will be taking place directly on the Speargrass Golf Course driving range, allowing movie goers and families alike to enjoy a blockbuster film in a refreshing change of scenery. Drive-in movie theatres were all the rage and hit their peak of popularity in the late 1950s. As societal changes progressed, the existence of drive-ins waned dramatically. VCRs were the new technology, allowing families to watch movies at home at a reasonable price, and the inflation of real estate at that time was also a dominating factor in the loss of public interest. Drive-ins were the social hangout, a place to see and be seen. I dont think theres any period in the history of the drivein when the movie was that important, said Film professor Ron Falzone of Columbia College Chicago, in the NBC Chicago article, Whatever Happened to Drive-In Movies?, written by Phil Rogers. The rage of drive-in theatres may be something of the past, but outdoor movies are still appreciated and offer a different experience as to what a typical movie theatre can, despite modern 3D capabilities and reclining seats. Similar events like Movie on the Range are presented in venues worldwide. Movie in the Park has offered its viewing experience to over 200,000 movie goers throughout Canada since its debut in 2005. I think for a lot of kids nowadays, theyre used to going to a movie indoors. This is something that will be a real unique and new experience for those kids, said the Manager of Speargrass Golf Course, Brady Shave. The pre-movie events are to begin at 7:30 p.m., including a hula hooping contest, novelty dance competitions, a bounce house and prize giveaways. As the night grows darker, at approximately 10:00 p.m., the Disney film, Chimpanzee, will hit the screen. I think it is a good family movie but its not just for kids, I think the adults will get something out it as well. Guests will be invited to set up their lawn chairs or blankets on the driving range for the duration of the movie. Its kind of a free for all, everyone sits where theyre most comfortable and where they will get the best view, and looking at the calendar, it doesnt look like there will be much of a moon that night. The Movie in the Park has gained a positive reputation for consistently producing a great picture and sound, which Shave experienced first hand in a past venue in Calgary. I was very much impressed, it was almost like going to a movie in a movie theatre. The screen is quite large, the picture is quite crisp, the sound is amazing. It really was a good time, and thats what were really going for here, and I think people will be really impressed. Guests are more than welcome to bring their own snacks and refreshments. There will also be some sold at the event. Grabbing a bite at the clubhouse is an option and guests are asked to not to bring their own alcoholic beverages. Shave encourages guests to be wary of the weather forecast and to come prepared. It is recommended that guests bring something comfortable to sit on, and some bug spray. The goal number of guests to attend is between 200-300. The whole point is to get out and for the people who live in Speargrass, to get out and see their neighbours and interact socially, and for people who arent from Speargrass, maybe just get them out and see what Speargrass is all about and as well, have a good time. Shave hopes to expand for future summers, and perhaps offer an event for an older audience. Ideally, I would prefer to see this as a series of movies over the course of the summer, and people would come out and plan on a date night every two-three weeks and come watch a movie. If thats the case, I would like to see sort of a theme run through the summer and say, These are the movies that fit within that theme, and show those movies over the course of the summer. If planning to attend, Shave asks if guests can register online on the Movie on the Range page on their website, www. speargrass.ca in order for the staff to prepare for how many guests that will be attending to ensure that everyone is properly cared for. Tree planting project reaches goal of 300

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter The Strathmore Lions Club partnered with Eagle Lake Nurseries Garden Centre and Communities in Bloom to bring a new tree initiative to the area a few months ago. One of our main goals has been over the years is to plant trees within the community and we have done a number of different initiatives to try to accomplish that, said Robert Breitwieser, Strathmore Communities in Bloom chairman. So when I had an opportunity to talk with the Lions Club and they suggested they (Lions International) wanted to plant a million trees throughout the world. They said, in Strathmore (they) would like to do a program too. Communities in Bloom are thrilled to be able to work together in partnership with the Lions club to promote a worthy effort, planting trees. In Strathmore the goal was to see 300 new trees planted between May 1 and June 30. Eagle Lake Nurseries offered trees at 50 per cent off for people who had brought in the coupon found in the local papers. Lorinda Weissig saw the coupon and was eager to participate in the initiative. I knew of a part of the house where we really needed a tree and I went down and hunted for what I wanted and found it and got it for a really good price, said Weissig, who lives in Hillview. I think that (it was) great just for the fact that were a prairie community and we just by nature dont have a lot of trees in our community. Its nice to make them more affordable and then more of us are likely to put it in, and it just adds to the coziness of our community. The initiative in Strathmore was part of a larger project. Currently Lions International is participating in the Million Tree Planting Campaign. Strathmores aid in the project brought them 300 trees closer to their goal.

Dismissed author exposing government cover-up

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Every few months the Strathmore Municipal Library has a new author giving a reading, and possibly a signing of their book. Gisele Jubinville will be at the library on August 4, after first appearing in the Heritage Days parade, to discuss her book Dismissed. Shes an author from up north. Shes basically written a memoir and from what I understand from her biography is she opened up a home business, she sold a patent to a fitted sheet, said Carmen Erison, assistant director of library services for the Strathmore Municipal Library. She made lots and lots of money and what happened with that money is one day she walked into a casino and that was the end of it. Jubinville had a gambling addiction and she lost approximately $400,000 on VLTs through her addiction. In the midst of it all she started calling support lines for help and she accidently came across an Alberta government cover up. Jubinville called Alberta Gaming liquor and control head quarters. She was mistakenly given government accounting figures that no one else was privy to and she used them to uncover misleading information and cover up practices. Its based on a true story, its based on an Alberta true story, and she is going to be here in Strathmore to do a bit of a reading from her book as well as she will have books for sale and to sign here at the library, said Erison. It sounds like a very interesting book and Im looking forward to reading it myself. Gisele Jubinville will be at the library from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on August 4. Everyone is welcome to stop in and hear what she has to say and purchase a copy of her book. Also at the library until July 23 people can enter into a draw to win tickets to the performance My Name is Asher Lev being held on the Rosebud stage.

A Tale of TAILS
Sharon MCLeay Times Contributor The Calgary Stampede is celebrating its Centennial year with a free unique multi arts performance, combining theatre, animal acumen, performance, and music and video- technical innovation. The performance is called TAILS, a play on the homonym Tale a word that means a recital of events or happenings; a report or revelation - this event encompasses that definition. The story is told from the viewpoint of three mustang ponies about how they bring opportunity and prosperity to the paths of people they cross. This leads them to the formation of the first Calgary Stampede. With the theme this year THE SPIRIT OF THE WEST, 100 YEARS IN THE MAKING, the production interlaces Aboriginal myth and spiritual beliefs with the interaction of horse and

Kiwanis club hoping to find a home in Strathmore

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter The Kiwanis Club is once again trying to make an appearance in Strathmore. Last year Cory Johnson and his wife Sandi found out they had friends interested in joining the Kiwanis Club, an organization that is near and dear to Johnson. The response was tremendous, but the project had to be put on hold when Johnson became the Governor-Elect of the Kiwanis Club of Calgary. Now that things are slowing down, and with more help being proposed to start the club, Johnson is ready to refocus. Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to changing the world one community and one child at time. There is a need in this town whether its sending kid to a summer camp or getting them bikes that they need or making sure that they can go to WalMart, said Johnson. It doesnt matter what the project is, but when we get members together, a group of people together, we decide as a whole what projects we want to do and how we want to fundraise and where we want to spend that money. Theres not really a commitment when people become a member of Kiwanis, they are only committed to do what they want to do and what they can do. One problem Johnson encountered last year, and is worried about this year, is that people dont quite understand why you would join a Kiwanis Club, and why they would have to pay for membership. The membership is approximately $100 per year, which isnt much, said Johnson, when you think of what you get back from it. Ive been involved in it for almost 10 years and its given me back more then I have given it, said Johnson. Its part of all of our duties to make sure that people are being taken care of in the community, especially the kids. In order to bring Kiwanis to Strathmore, there needs to be at least 25 people who join. A few ideas are in the planning to try to promote the club and find the membership. There has been discussion about mailing an invitation for people to join and visiting businesses to see if they would be interested in joining. Johnson said they are also looking for members of the public to contact him if they are interested in finding out more, or in joining. Johnson can be reached at 403-829-5844 or via email at cbj@coryjohnson.ca.

rider. The horses play a big part in the support and development of Southern Alberta towns and cities. The production pays a phenomenal tribute to the ancestral roots that reach into many of our family trees and is the best ever shown at the Stampede. It will leave a positive lasting image for visitors about Alberta. Most would not have seen anything like it and it shouldnt be missed. The production intentionally used local talent when casting the roles and one of the main narrators is Tom Jackson, who is recognized for his work in Canadian movies and television.

The Artistic Director Michael Barnard, who has done many Disney productions worked closely with Dan Finley the producer, a veteran with the Calgary Stampede. Spirits are in all living creatures, says Michael Barnard, director, TAILS in a Stampede press release, but none as powerful as that of the OTAS the horse. When the markedly different spirits connect, a true and lasting friendship forms because they make up for each others differences. Tickets are given out by the steps to the Corral arena prior to performances. The production runs four times daily.

Riding to conquer cancer

Jenna Campbell Times Contributor Team Prairie Wind, the five member team from Strathmore journeyed into The Rockies for the fourth annual Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, June 23-24. Inspiration from survivors and those currently in the battle, and hope for future research progressions was what fuelled Team Prairie Wind to complete the ride of over 200 km. Together the team raised over $18,000. The team Prairie Wind members include: Colin Lenox, Chris Iversen, Wes Lewis and Armand Pinel from the teaching community and student Jonah Zankl who will be entering Grade 12. The ride began in Calgary and headed west where participants were to camp overnight at Chain Lakes National Park, AB. The participants rode over 100 km back into Calgary the following day. 1,854 participants rode together on the 2012 journey with a combined total of over $8 million raised, with proceeds going to the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Proceeds will be directed within the province to 17 cancer centres. Other rides commenced across Canada in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec. For Team Prairie Wind, it was Iversen and Zankls first year and Pinel, Lewis, and Lenoxs second year partaking in the ride. I was having some knee problems, and I couldnt run. My father had passed away due to prostate cancer, so Id seen flyers sitting on stores shelf, I finally picked one up and talked to my wife, and we agreed we should do it. I bought an old mountain bike and I started riding, and I enjoyed it more and more, and started looking at the ride more and more, said Lenox. Iversen was used to downhill biking but, with an environmental mindset, began riding his bike to work every day. From training and getting used to road riding, Iversen decided to join Team Prairie Wind. Describing the two-day journey, Iversen and Lenox blatantly state in unison that the ride was wet. The ride itself, you have to have the right sort of frame of mind, youre doing this for a reason, the reason for a lot of people is very personal, they will share it with you because its either their cancer or a familys cancer that they have beaten or are in the process to beat or have lost the battle to. I know for the ride itself, whether its cold, whether its wet, is nothing in comparison to what the battle is for these people, said Lenox. Weve all had family members that have been afflicted by cancer, is some way shape or form, Ive watched students die, its just not something I wanted to continue to let go without doing something, said Lenox. Iversen recalled a training day when the team rode together the day after a former student had passed away due to cancer. It was windy, it was in October, and we were running into 60 km head winds, but just kind of thinking of her that day, that drove us on the training and made it that much easier, said Iversen. Lenox remembered an inspirational moment from the previous years ride, where he met a woman who had breast cancer, which had spread into her shoulder blade. A majority of the bone had been removed. She was waiting for a prosthetic insert for that but she still rode. If a lady that doesnt have a shoulder blade can do that ride, its amazing. Its digging real deep, finding peoples stories as to why they are there, said Lenox. If there ever was a need for that extra push, Lenox said all you needed to do was look around and see the yellow flags, which marked the cancer survivors who were still riding. Iversen said another highlight included the Enbridge team who went over and beyond to take care of the riders. Theyre out there in vehicles and motorcycles controlling traffic, we come into our pit stops and they are there giving us food, and snacks and things like that. Our last stop, it was so muddy there were people there scraping off our muddy shoes to put back into our pedals easier, and back at camp, there is massages, showers, theres people serving food and beer, said Iversen. In regards to meeting the mandatory criteria to join the ride, raising $2,500 appeared daunting to Iversen, who was surprised at how willing people were to give. I am relatively new to the community, so I dont have a lot of connections, even in Alberta as well, but once people know you are doing the ride, (money) just started coming in, said Iversen. For me, Im still on a bit of a high, on cloud nine. I did it, I finished it, over 100 km a day, and then thinking about the money that we raised, its nice to knowing that it is going to research, and maybe one of those dollars that one of us collected is going to be the one to do it, said Iversen. Lets make cancer the polio of the 21st century

Continued from Page 23 With a recent cancer scare, Lenox wants more than anything to help someone hear those words youre cancer free. I was cancer free and was able to participate, and then there are a couple of kids in the school that are waiting to find out. Just being able to participate means possibly giving somebody else a chance. Your whole outlook, no matter how hard you try, it affects you and then all of a sudden, it is a weight lifted off of your shoulders, said Lenox. Iversen and Lenox are hopeful for the future and that one day, cancer can be considered the polio of the 21st century as Lenox described. Even if we dont find a cure in both of our lifetimes, the money going into the research is making things better. In my own lifetime, when I was a boy when Terry Fox ran across Canada, in those days, cancer was a death sentence. Now Im only 40, and that was 30 years ago, and today, cancer is more treatable. It changes your life, but you hear more and more success stories, said Iversen. Iversen is hoping more awareness can be spread amongst the younger generation. Youth must realize they are in charge of their own health and have to be proactive. When they get into about grade nine and are hitting their growth spurts, with that comes responsibility yourself to make sure you are healthy. Talk to your doctors, make sure you understand how to do proper self examinations for things and make sure if you find something on your body, its not something you should ignore, said Iveresen. For anyone who is toying with the idea of taking part in the 2013 ride, Lenox strongly encourages those who are interested to come out for a training ride with the team. More information about joining Team Prairie Wind can be found by contacting Colin Lenox at clenox@hotmail.ca. More information about the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer can be found at www.conquercancer.ca.

Remembering a fallen friend

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Its been almost a year since the tragic work place accident that took the life of 25-year-old Nathan Haase. There is not a day that goes by that his friends and family dont miss him. Thats why in order to keep Haases memory alive while raising money for a good cause, a memorial golf tournament has been organized for August 11. He was a real class act, a community volunteer for the rural fire department. He was all about helping people, coaching soccer, he was an all around good guy, said Mike Bobbitt, a long time friend of Haases. He was worth everything to me and all of our friends, he was a pretty outstanding guy and definitely a family man and I know that were doing it for the family as well. It was two months or so after Haase passed that Bobbitt and fellow friend Preston Rusnack thought of organizing a golf tournament, and they have been hard at work since. It was actually me and my buddy Preston, we were both really close with Nathan and we decided that was what we wanted to honour him with it because it was his favourite sport, so we thought why not, said Bobbitt. The tournament will be held at the Strathmore Golf Course on August 11. Bobbitt said they are hoping to have 150 people sign up, and to raise somewhere around $3,000 to $5,000. Its going to a scholarship thats been set up at both the Catholic school and Strathmore High School for trades, said Bobbitt. Anyone interested in golfing in the tournament are encouraged to call immediately as space is limited. Mike Bobbitt can be reached at 403-618-5591 or you can contact Preston Rusnack at 403-899-3295.

The Strathmore Boston Pizza Thunder U16 team travelled to Kalispell, Montana this past weekend, capturing a fourth place finish. The team is gearing up to host the Western Canadian Championship Aug. 9-12.

Strathmore hosts ball tournament

Morgan Lee Times Contributor The Strathmore Boston Pizza Thunder will be hosting The Western Canadian Boys/ Girls U16 Championship from August 9-12. The event is four days long and has free admission to the grounds for any child under the age of 18. [It was] Albertas turn to host the Bantam A Western, so we put a bid in and were elected to host it, said coach Lanky Johnson. With such a big event there is a lot to organize. Opening ceremonies, the closing, everything official. There might be a big banquet held. Theres all kinds of things going on, said Johnson. Even with so much to do, this tournament is barely on the teams radar right now as they are busy concentrating on the games they have yet to play. Recently returning from a tournament in Kalispell, Montana where they finished in fourth place, the team is now geared up to play again. This week is the Provincial tournament in Stoney Plain where the Thunder are up against seven teams from across Alberta. The games will be very competitive and these girls plan to bring their best. The Thunder begin day one facing off against Calgary and Lloydminster. This day will prove to be a challenge as the Lloydminster club is the overall provincial favourite this year and will probably play as the Alberta representative at Nationals in Ontario. However, the girls are up to the challenge. On Day 2, theyll play Edmonton and Red Deer to complete the tournament. According to Johnson, the team is striving for a 3-1 record in round robin play. Just For Kicks soccer camp ran from July 2 to July 13. Close to 50 kids participated in the camp which teaches a different skill everyday.

Soccer camp wraps up, maybe for good

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Just For Kicks Soccer camp is just wrapping up for what might be its last season. The summer soccer program was the brainchild of brother and sister Michael and Jenni Annicchiarico after they realized there was a need for it in 2010. Jenni Annicchiarico will be moving to Red Deer next month and isnt sure if she will be able to bring the program back next year. Im going to a year round school actually, I start in August. So for next year if Im at the same school I dont know if Ill do it because I only get a month off, said Jenni. Basically it just depends, hopefully Ill be back because camp continues to grow and we have a lot of returning kids, so hopefully it will work out. When asked if Michael will host the camp,

Shannon LeClair Photos

she wasnt sure if he would have the time to organize the program with his other commitments as the athletic director for Holy Cross Collegiate. During the past three years the program has grown, and many of the kids have returned each year. Its been just as fun for the coaches as it has been for the kids. Ive loved doing it. Its great to see the kids returning and getting better. I know that the kids have a lot of fun with it, and we have a lot of support within the community, said Jenni. Strathmore Minor Soccer and Mark Shorhen have helped us out a lot and let us use the soccer balls and the small nets and things like that. So its been a fantastic program, its easy for me to do because I just have to get out and coach everyday and the kids are great. Friday is the final day for the kids ages 11 to 14.

comes to the roster, the team is nursing a couple minor injuries, but hopes to be at full strength by Friday. This time of year after 40 plus games all teams face the injury bug as it is part of the game, said Johnson. With provincials and the Western Championship ahead of them the girls will need to keep up their stamina. With the high skill level of the teams competing, playing at home may not be any advantage. Girls at this age start getting looked at by college scouts the teams that are coming are all very talented teams, said Johnson. [The other teams] will have just as many fans as we do. Its a lot of people. Itll bring in probably close to 500 people just for the event. Other teams in the area have also been battling it out in provincials. In Mite A the Strathmore All Stars won themselves a silver medal after a twogame playoff final against Red Deer. The team held the lead in game one until the fourth inning but could not hold it. In game two Red Deer got the lead and held on to defeat Strathmore and win the gold. The Squirt B Renegades were eliminated in provincials due to a slow start on opening day, dropping two games. The Renegades did, however, win the Calgary Minor Championship this season. The Bantam C Wildcats had two wins and two losses in their provincial finals in Leduc and were eliminated. This week they continue to play in the Calgary Minor Championship, needing only one more win against SBR to claim the gold. The Pee Wee C Heat will be in St. Paul for their provincials, after finishing in third place in the Calgary Minor Playoffs.

Venom bring home the hardware

A great season was had by the Strathmore Venom Bantam B team. With only one loss during regular season play they finished in first place in the league. This put them in the playoffs for City Championship. They won their first playoff game by one point that was scored in the last 8.3 seconds of the game. The next game followed with five-minute overtime then a seven-man shoot out with the win going to the Calgary Sabre Cats. The final result was Venom taking second place in the city. As soon as playoffs ended the team packed up and headed to Cranbrook for a tournament that was held July 1st weekend. The tournament was tough as there were A teams entered that they had to play after one loss they were in the Gold medal playoff game and came out victorious. A gold medal was added to their hardware won throughout the season.

Hard work pays off in gold

Shannon LeCLair Times Reporter Merely competing in the Paralympics Nationals would have been a good way to end the year for Strathmore resident and athlete Cory Johnson. Bringing home two gold medals for his efforts made the season end on an even sweeter note for Johnson, who has cerebral palsy. This is my highest level competition Ive ever done and to be able to finish to strongly, because I am technically at the end of my running year, to put all the work from the last 14 months into this event and then getting the results I got are pretty awesome, said Johnson. Johnson competed in the 200 metre run on June 28. He ran it in 31.99 seconds, which he said was another personal best for him. It was way too slow, it was almost four seconds away from the Olympic qualifying time so I didnt come near that standard. On Friday ( June 29) I ran the 100 metre and in that one I ran a personal best of 14.88 seconds, .18 away from the Olympic standard, said Johnson. One of the best things for Johnson was having the chance to run against two other people who also have cerebral palsy. Johnson said the other two men were seeded faster and were in a different category than he was. Johnson suffers from cerebral palsy in four limbs and the men he raced have it in two limbs. He beat both of them. For me it was just nice to run against people that were within the same time period, because when I run against ablebodied people theyre always at least two to three seconds faster, said Johnson. Johnson feels it allowed him to actually race and go faster, and he found he really surprised himself. In Alberta Johnson said the only two parathletes are amputees, there isnt anyone else with cerebral palsy competing. Without the help and support of his wife Sandi and stepson Brandon, Johnson isnt sure he would be able to give his running the focus he has been. For the next month a half he will be relaxing and focusing on family time, while preparing for the new addition to their family due in November. In August Johnson will begin planning his next year. I have a lot of work to do and with a baby in there and all that, its going to be really hard but Sandi is very, very supportive and she realizes how important it is to me, said Johnson. The time I want to get is under 14 seconds, somebody just set a new world record in the 100 (metre) and thats under 12 seconds now. The world record is something that I dont know if I can attain, but its all about every year if I can shave a second off or half a second off my time then Im progressing in the right (way) and as soon as I start getting slower then its time to pack it up and retire. In September 2013 he will be representing Canada at the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships.

Elsie Louise Westgard passed away peacefully at Strathmore Hospital on July 8, 2012. Elsie is survived by her husband Richard; daughters Karen and Donna (Randy); son Danny (Kelly); sisters Diana and Edith (Dellan); grandchildren Candace, Amanda, Braydon, Jared, Jase, Jay, Stevy, and Tori; and great-grandson Kaylem. Elsie was predeceased by her son Ralph Helfrich Jr. and her parents Rose and Roy Potter. Born in North Battleford, Saskatchewan on April 7, 1946, Elsie spent the majority of her life in Strathmore raising a beautiful family and being involved in numerous community activities. Her family and friends were always number one to Elsie; she was always putting others before herself. After a long battle with cancer she is now free from pain and suffering and can now live eternal life as Gods angel. We know in our hearts she will be watching over her loved ones as she did her entire life. A funeral service will be held Thursday, July 12, 2012 at Lord of All Lutheran Church, Strathmore at 2:00 p.m. To send condolences, please visit www. wheatlandfuneralhome.ca. DIMION, Dennis Lloyd

March 19, 1965 July 6, 2012

Dennis passed away on July 6, 2012 in Edmonton, Alberta. He is loved by many. Dennis is survived by his wife Angela; children Cody, Casey and Camryn; mother Shirley; grandmother Edna Pepper; brothers Michael (Gina), Curtis (Melanie) and Jason; sisters Grace (Dimitri), Joyce (Arnold), Linda (Melvin) and Leslie (Tom); nieces Janelle, Brittany, Ashley, Athina, Amber, Rebecca, Alexandra, Elena, Emilee and Katie; nephews Carson, Nicolas and Lucas; and his PEI family. He was predeceased by his father Metro in 2001, and grandfather Lloyd in 1993. Dennis approached all aspects of life with determination and focus including his health problems. He tried very hard to regain his life following a heart attack on May 2, but this one slipped through the loop. We are very thankful for the advancements in cardiac medicine, numerous blood donors and the exceptional care at the Foothills and University Hospitals which enabled Dennis to be with us for the past two months. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, July 12, 2012 at Hope Community Covenant Church, Strathmore at 7:00 p.m. To send condolences, please visit www. wheatlandfuneralhome.ca. Donations in memory of Dennis may be made directly to the Alberta Heart and Stroke Foundation (100, 119 14 Street NW, Calgary, AB, T2N 1Z6) or by becoming a regular blood donor.

It is so hard to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who showed their love and concern during the sudden death of our husband, and father Andy. The food, flowers and cards truly made us realize just what true friendship means. A special thank you to Fred Spicer for conducting the memorial service and the Strathmore Congregation of Jehovahs Witnesses for being there when we needed them most.
