Question: Discuss the view that teaching is not a profession

Who has the ability to inspire a passion for learning? Who is responsible for
producing this world with creative and critical thinkers? The answer to these
questions lies with teachers. More than any other profession, teaching has the
power to create a healthy, fair and peaceful world. It seeds our society with
informed, caring and educated citizens. I do believe that teaching is a profession,
one overlooked and underpaid for too long.
What exactly is defined as a profession and who is a professional? Webster
(1889) defines a profession as a vocation requiring advanced training and usually
involving mental rather than manual work. A professional is a person formally
certified by a body, having completed a required course of study or practise and
whose competence can usually be measured against an established set of standards.
There are several criteria used to define a profession that I will use to
explain why I believe that teaching is one. The first criteria is a profession
demands possession of a body of specialised knowledge and extended practical
training. Teachers are required to be education experts all of which involves
specialized knowledge and long preparation. There are universities just for training
teachers for example the Mico University College in Jamaica. This college offers
certificate, diploma and degree programmes in education administration, early
childhood, primary, secondary and special education. In this institution students
first have to complete their bachelors degree in a desired area which is usually a

three year programme and for one year complete a training course where they are
put in classroom settings for practice in order to get a teaching license. This
institution has a board of directors who control the certification, practice and
competence standards to determine who enters into the profession. If you
successfully complete the programme the board will award you with a degree and a
teaching certificate.
Another criteria is that a profession renders an essential social service.
Teaching is a unique service designed to meet the educational needs of persons and
of society. A teacher's role involves more than standing in front of a classroom and
lecturing. Even though a teacher spends the majority of the day in the classroom,
the teaching component is only part of the job. An effective teacher understands
that teaching involves wearing multiple hats to ensure that the school day runs
smoothly and all students receive a quality education. Teachers are also agents in
the socialization of their students. They must be leaders in the school and set a
positive example. They must be disciplinarians and at the same time show care and
concern for students. They guide their students and instill the acceptable values and
morals of society.
A profession demands continuous in service training of its members.
Teaching is no different than any job in that it must be perfected through practice.
Teachers are also learners who have to become updated with the ever-changing

educational system. They learn and develop different skills on how to teach
effectively in the classroom through workshops, seminars and enrolling in
advanced teaching courses.
A profession must have a code of ethics and standards for practise.
Members of the school board set out a code of ethics and standards of practise that
teachers must abide and exhibit. Teachers must uphold public trust, care, integrity,
commitment to students and the profession.
Members of a profession have autonomy in decision-making and practice.
Persons argue that teaching falls short of being a profession because teachers have
no power over their work and workplaces. Doctors and lawyers choose the hours
they work and who they work for. They have strong, respected representative
bodies while teachers are forced to defend themselves against heads of authority
and the government through trade unions. However, teachers who work
independently as tutors can set their own pay as well as their hours and terms of
work.
To conclude, a profession is an occupation based on intellectual study and
training with the purpose of supplying skilled services with ethical components.
There are a lot of misconceptions about teachers. A common one being that
teaching is an easy job with a lot of holidays and short working hours. I am not a

teacher but I do know that it is no easy task. A teacher has to be a master of the
subject and familiar with the material they present on a day to day basis. They must
be effective communicators, quick problem solvers, be able to work and adjust in
different environments and even become occasional counsellors. This profession
takes energy, knowledge, research, training and most of all patience. The
preparation of lesson plans alone take hours and presenting the material so that the
students understand is very important because if no one understands they must go
back to the drawing board and develop new methods. With that being said,
teaching should be considered as a profession.
