INSTRUCTOR: Ben Pingel
COURSE: Communications 130 Section 2
DATE: February 20, 2016
PROGRAMS USED: Adobe Illustrator
DESCRIPTION: Three different versions of a logo (regular, grayscale,
and color block) for Da Pineapple Grill, a restaurant in Rexburg, Idaho.
OBJECTIVES: Using only Adobe Illustrator, create an original logo for
a company, real or not. Consider branding opportunities and audience
appeal.
PROCESS: Using the pentool in Illustrator, I created three different logos
with varying design elements such as font, color scheme, and style.
Then I had a group of people choose which logos they liked the most.
After considering the votes of others and my own opinion on which logo
looks most put together, I swapped around some graphics and color
schemes to combine all of the strongest elements. For the final product, I created a grayscale version of my logo, varying the values, and a
white version with a teal background.

BROCHURE
INSTRUCTOR: Ben Pingel
COURSE: Communications 130 Section 2
DATE: March 26, 2016
PROGRAMS USED: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign
DESCRIPTION: A brochure covering the information regarding the
Festival of the Stars, a science based activity held in Chicago, Illinois.
OBJECTIVES: Design a brochure of a desired shape, size, and fold.
Create a unique logo for an event or business (fictional or real) that will
be placed on your brochure. Incorporate elements such as original text
of minimum of 250 words, four quality images and a text wrap that will
be displayed on your brochure.
PROCESS: I first used sketching to create my brochure type and size.
I used the pen tool to create the shapes for the skyline shown on the
front and then reflected it over to ensure that the skyline would fold into
itself.Using photoshop I edited my chosen images.
I used the pen tool in Illustrator to create the moon and stars for my
logo and decided to go with the indigo and gold color scheme because
it matched my theme very well. I placed this on the very front.
I lastly used the paragraph styling palette to create styling for both the
headings and body copy. For the paragraph styling, I decided to go with
the sleek look of the single spaces between paragraphs.
On the back I added text wrapping to go around the picture of the moon
To do this text wrapping I used the quick selection tool in Adobe
Photoshop to remove the background of the image. I then used the
refine mask dialogue box I then placed the moon into InDesign where
I used the text wrap option to wrap my text around the alpha channel
of the image.

BUSINESS CARD
INSTRUCTOR: Ben Pingel
COURSE: Communications 130 Section 2
DATE: February 27, 2016
PROGRAMS USED: Adobe Illustrator and InDesign
DESCRIPTION: A business card for Emily Russell Photography.
OBJECTIVES: Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.
Use the logo to design a 3.5X2 business card that could be used by
your client. Keep your design simple with a small font size, plenty of
white space and only pertinent information such as contact or company
details.
PROCESS: Using the pen tool in Illustrator, I was able to shape
individual parts of the flowers: the petals, stems and leafs. I then chose
appropriate fonts that went with the vibe of the business and put it all
together. In order to be able to place each individual item of my logo
and have the ability to arrange my flowers easily, I saved each part of
my floral arrangement as separate documents in Illustrator.
Using InDesign, I placed my logo on the card template I created by
making a 2X3.5 box that represented the required size for the business
card. After making the logo a little bit bigger to take up the space, I
copied and reflected the floral arrangement onto the template created
for the back side of the business card. I then used visual hierarchy to
place the text of information. Lastly, I emphasized a call to action at the
bottom of the card.

DESCRIPTION: Letterhead stationary for Emily Russell Photography.
OBJECTIVES: Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image
without imitating existing logos, previous designs, photos or live trace.
Use the logo to design a letterhead that could be used by your client.
Keep your design simple with a small font size, plenty of white space
and only pertinent information such as contact or company details.
Using InDesign, I placed a larger version of my business name in
the upper left corner and placed each individual item of my floral
arrangement in the top right hand corner. I was then able to rearrange
them to fit the top part of the letterhead and save room in the middle
for open space. I then placed all pertinent information in the bottom left
hand corner, emphasizing my name, and separated it from the rest with
a black line.

PROGRAMS USED: Adobe Photoshop
DESCRIPTION: An inspirational poster about the beauty of life and a
clear representation of a chosen colors scheme.
OBJECTIVES: Using basic photography skills, take a quality photo that
shows a particular color scheme. Edit the photo in Photoshop. Crop and
size the image as desired and use layers to add text and other elements
to the design.
PROCESS: I used props from my room to take a photo with my color
scheme using my Nikon camera. I placed my picture in Photoshop and
used some main editing techniques: levels, saturation, sharpness, and
color balance.
After editing, I started my design by adding text and repeating design
elements to my photo. I used the eye dropper tool to create color
swatches and change the coloring in the flowers and vase to match
more precisely. After creating the perfect colors, I then could repeat my
coloring across the poster and used that in the text as well as two small
boxes. Lastly, I placed my color swatches at the bottom (with labels)
and aligned my text above with the box furthest to the right.
MONTAGE
INSTRUCTOR: Ben Pingel
COURSE: Communications 130 Section 2
DATE: February 13, 2016
PROGRAMS USED: Adobe Photoshop
DESCRIPTION: A spiritually based poster montage.
OBJECTIVES: Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant
spiritual message. Using Photoshop, learn to blend two or more quality
images together gradually, using masks. Apply typography principles
and a filter to one image. Creatively format the text.
PROCESS: I began by inserting the picture in Photoshop and appling
a slight vibrancy enhancement as well as increasing the levels on the
unsharp mask filter to ensure that the outline of the mountains would
show through the layers on top.
Next I placed the cropped picture of the man and using a layer mask, I
removed about 60% of the top picture to reveal the landscape behind.
As I moved closer to the body of the man, I reduced opacity gradually to
blend the layers evenly. I lastly blended the entirety of the man into the
landscape to leave a light silhouette with other subtle details included
To add dimension, I inserted two white triangles on the left side of
the design and decreased the larger triangles opacity to 14% and the
smaller one to 9%. I then placed them on top of each other and adjusted
them to pass over the mans eye and line up with the slope of the lower
right mountain. I lastly added my text using the font Adam and left
aligned the lines.

DATE: January 30, 2016
PROGRAMS USED: Microsoft Word, Epson Scanner, PDF2JPG.net (PDF
converter).
DESCRIPTION: An ad for Save the Rainforest, an event put on by the
Round Earth Foundation.
OBJECTIVES: Understand basic image sizing and find, scan and import
a high-quality image for the event ad. Using only Microsoft Word (no
Adobe programs) create a full-bleed design with an effective color
scheme that will enhance the message.
PROCESS: I used the scanner to bring my image from the magazine
to Microsoft Word. After deciding to stretch it across the page in an
effort to utilize its coloring, I went online to download a suitable font
that went with my theme of the rainforest. After aligning my title
in an interesting and attention-grabbing way, I focused on my the
information I needed in my text.
I added repetition in the three boxes to the right of my title and chose a
color scheme that I dispersed throughout the entirety of the design to
create balance.
FLIER
INSTRUCTOR: Ben Pingel
COURSE: Communications 130 Section 2
DATE: January 23, 2016
PROGRAMS USED: Adobe Photoshop and InDesign
DESCRIPTION: A flier for college students about a Graduate Leadership
Conference in the area.
OBJECTIVES: Apply basic design principles and use appropriate
typography while Incorporating basic InDesign skills. Use images and a
logo provided to complete the design.
PROCESS: I began by creating four separate sketches of possible
design ideas for the flier. After deciding on one basic outline of one, I
used Adobe InDesign to bring some previously brainstormed design
ideas together.
I spent a lot of time ensuring my focus was first the title and then the
text. I incorporated three sets of three boxes of varying shades around
the outside of the flier to add repetition and also add focus to the
three main elements: the title, text and picture. Next I added a cropped
picture and text wrap around it. Alignment was also a huge focus while
designing the piece to ensure a clean look.
WEBPAGE
INSTRUCTOR: Ben Pingel
COURSE: Communications 130 Section 2
DATE: March 12, 2016
PROGRAMS USED: Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, and Notepad++
DESCRIPTION: A webpage created to show the process for which a logo
was made for Emily Russell Photography.
OBJECTIVES: WW
PROCESS: I created this web page using only Notepad++. After I
marked up all my content and inserted my image of my logo, I attached
a pre-made CSS document to my HTML.
I then used the colors from my logo as the colors for my web page
with the help of the color hex from Photoshop. I changed my fonts and
inserted padding around the logo and text so that they would not be too
close to the edge of the web page.
To add personality to my page, I went into Illustrator and created a
polka dot pattern using the gold from my color scheme; I placed this as
the background for the entire webpage. I also created a stem pattern
using the stems from my logo and placed it as the background for my
h1.
