PPM Conversion

This document provides conversion factors between measurements of gaseous pollutant concentrations in units of micrograms per cubic meter (μg/m3) and parts per billion by volume (ppb). It lists specific conversion factors for common pollutants such as sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and carbon monoxide when measured at 1 atmosphere of pressure and 25 degrees Celsius. A general equation is also given to convert between the units using the molecular weight and temperature in degrees Celsius.

Concentrations of gaseous pollutants is sometimes given in units of mass per volume, and at other
times in ppb or ppm.
ppb (v) is parts per billion by volume (i.e., volume of gaseous pollutant per 109 volumes of ambient
air).
g/m3 is micrograms of gaseous pollutant per cubic meter of ambient air.
Conversion factors are listed in the table below for a number of substances.
The conversion assumes an ambient pressure of 1 atmosphere and a temperature of 25 degrees
Celsius.

SO2

1 ppb = 2.62 g/m

NO2

1 ppb = 1.88 g/m

NO

1 ppb = 1.25 g/m

O3

1 ppb = 2.00 g/m

CO

1 ppb = 1.145 g/m

Benzene

1 ppb = 3.19 g/m

The general equation is

g/m = (ppb)*(12.187)*(M) / (273.15 + C)
where M is the molecular weight of the gaseous pollutant. An atmospheric pressure of 1
atmosphere is assumed.
