Music Video Analysis: Chocolate by the 1975

Analysis
At the start of the music video, our eye-line
of sight is directed to the character in the
distance (to the left of the frame), through
the use of a focus pull from the railing to
one of the members of the 1975. The fact
that the main member of the 1975 is on his
own in the shot at the beginning signifies
that he is the most important protagonist of
the narrative/member in the 1975. His
isolation while having his hands in the
pocket and looking down makes him look
shy and having something to hide which
adds to the mysterious/allusive tone of the
music video.

Analysis
The use of wide shot in the second frame,
with the car being predominant in the shot
represents the concept of journey and
makes the audience wonder where they
are travelling to. The camera is static but
the car is moving, giving the viewer the
illusion of tracking. Furthermore, the fact
that the outside is more blurred makes the
car and the passengers the focal point,
directing the viewers gaze to those people.
The group are driving very slow which gives
a chilled and laid back tone to the video
while also giving the representation that the
group are stuck with aspirations and are
anxious that the world is moving at one
pace while they are moving at a much
slower pace.
Analysis
The third shot features a low angled, closeup which is effective in showing emotions
and facial expression. He is alone again
which actors the idea that he is the main
focus of the video and leads it forward.
However, this contradicts the typical point
of using a low angled shot which is usually
used to make them feel smaller. The smoke
which is used in the third shot is an indexical
sign of fire and danger giving a more bad
boy image which society perhaps rejects.
Analysis
The fourth shot features a two-shot which
represents a close relationship between
them. The use of a focus pull, gives the
main character importance and a more
powerful presence in the shot. In the fourth
shot, the fact that the pair are looking in
different directions perhaps suggests a
distant relationship, maybe signifying a fall
out? The presence of rain in this shot
connotes sadness, anchored by the facial
expressions on the characters faces.
Analysis
The use of wide shot in the fifth frame has a
very similar effect to the second shot, with
the car being predominant in the shot
represents the concept of journey and
makes the audience wonder where they
are travelling to. The headlights in the
nighttime are enigmatic and add to the
tone of the music video. The car, anchored
by colours, in the second shot is an older
more classic car, referencing to the past
while adding to the vintage and retro feel
of the music video while making the viewer
feel intimidated. There is a representation of
masculinity as the views sees the four group
members in the car which could perhaps
be challenged my the artists dress style and
high pitched voice.
Analysis
In the sixth shot the composition of
characters changers, using for example a
tracking shot over the shoulders. This shot
also uses lighting to add contrast and
depth. Furthermore, it reveals more of the
artists facial features without showing too
much, therefore maintaining some sense of
anonymity.

Analysis
In the seventh shot a two-shot is used to
direct focus, innocence is contradicted by
nakedness, subverting the notion of sex
before marriage (binary opposition, right
and wrong can perhaps be symbolised by
the contrast between light and dark).

Analysis

which reinforces this representation of a
close relationship between them. The use
of a focus pull, gives the main character

Analysis
Ninth shot, predominance of alone shots.
Film Noir and chiaroscuro lighting are key
features of this scene, where there is a stark
contrast between light and dark.
Furthermore, there is the use of silhouettes,
hiding the facial features of the characters
in the music video makes the video appear
much more mysterious and enigmatic.
Music/Lyrics: You say, we'll go where

nobody knows, with guns hidden under
our petticoat.
Analysis
In the tenth shot a 360 degree shot is used
to convey mystery and suspicion. The midshot framing presents the singer as a key
person in the video. I think that the use of
smoke in this shot gives an aura of a
rebellious nature is reiterated by the
physical appearance and his stance of
looking down.
