Social Studies 6.2.3: Students will analyze the structure and functions of the democratic
system in ancient Athens by exploring and reflecting upon the following questions and issues:
How did identity, status and class structure impact citizenship in ancient Athens?
Drama Readers Theatre Skills:
Learn scripting techniques.
Drama Playmaking:
Use the art of playmaking to express ideas and content from other subject areas; e.g.,
history, literature, feelings.
English 2.4 Create Original Texts:
Structure Texts: determine purpose and audience needs to choose forms, and organize
ideas and details in oral, print and other media texts.
English 3.3 Organize, Record and Evaluate:
Organize information: organize ideas and information using a variety of strategies and
techniques, such as comparing and contrasting, and classifying and sorting according
to subtopics and sequence.
Evaluate information: evaluate the appropriateness of information for a particular
audience and purpose. Recognize gaps in gathered information, and suggest additional
information needed for a particular audience and purpose.
English 4: Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to enhance the clarity
and artistry of communication.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Create and enact a script to represent the social structure and citizenship in ancient

PREPARATION AND LOGISTICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Have agenda written on the whiteboard.
Photocopy all required materials.
Performance Assessment Task Handout.
Performance Assessment Task Rubric.
Prepare additional I can statements to be posted for student reference.
Reserve the iPad cart for the afternoon. Allow students enough time to get their iPads
and put their iPads away.
Ensure Celtx Script is downloaded on every iPad.
Create Kahoot quiz. Have the game pin written on the board and load the quiz before
class begins.
Have a sample movie script prepared and loaded for demonstration.
Put on your Crown of Golden Leaves.
PROCEDURE
Introduction
Return the students Exit Slips. Review their answers and provide
descriptive feedback.
Have students retrieve their designated iPads from the iPad cart.
Ask them to go to kahoot.it and enter the game pin. Remind students to
use the nickname that they have already provided at the beginning of the
school year.
Once everyone has joined, start the quiz. This will help students to
activate their prior knowledge on the social structure of ancient Athens.

1. Indicate to students that they will be creating a movie

script with the Celtx script app on their iPads.
2. Have an example of a movie script on the SmartBoard.
(Star Wars: The Force Awakens)
3. Ask students to identify components of the scripts
structure (i.e. scene headings/sluglines, action, character
names, dialogue, parentheticals). Outline and clarify any
additional key components.
4. Have students open up Celtx script and explain how to
use it. There is another sample script on the Celtx app for
those students who need additional support.

1. Provide students with time to practice what they have

learned about script writing and familiarize themselves
with the Celtx script app.
a. Students will get into their character groups and
create a short script about their specific character,
drawing on each others knowledge about their
groups role in ancient Athenian society.
2. While students are completing their short scripts, walk
from group to group to provide formative feedback and
troubleshoot any issues with the app.
3. After 15-20 minutes, ask students to regroup to answer
any remaining questions about script writing and to
discuss Lights, Camera, Athens!

1. Have the slave group hand out the performance

assessment task handout and rubric.
2. In designated groups (indicated on the handout), students
will be be asked to develop a plausible script to bring to
life a scene in everyday ancient Athens using their
assigned characters. Students should consider the
activities completed in the previous two lessons.

3. Answer any questions that the students may have
regarding the performance assessment task.
4. Allow students to get started on the performance
assessment task with the remaining time left in class.
