Setting and Context - Zach Elementary School

Culture and Community Context:

Zach Elementary School is one of 31 elementary schools in Poudre School District. It was opened in August, 2002. It is
located on the far southeast side of Fort Collins; this area of town is where the most growth and development has
occurred in the past couple of decades. It is generally a very affluent area of town, which affects the student
population. Fort Collins has a total population of about 155,000 people. Zach has about 630 students and is a
neighborhood school, which means that unlike many schools in Fort Collins, people living outside of the schools
attendance area cannot school of choice into it.
Demographic Characteristics:
About 84% of students at Zach Elementary are white, as opposed to about 73% at other schools in Poudre School
District and about 55% at a typical school in Colorado. The remaining population is comprised of about 5% Asian
students, 5% Hispanic students, 5% Two Races students, and 0.5% black students. The city of Fort Collins has a
population that is about 83% white, which is fairly comparable to Zach, but Fort Collins has about a 10% HIspanic and
2% Asian population, which is a significantly different balance of those minorities than Zach. Only 4.3% of students at
Zach qualify for free or reduced lunch. The schools standardized testing scores rank 21st out of 975 elementary
schools in Colorado. Teachers at Zach have an average of 11 years of teaching experience, and 24 of 35 teachers hold
a masters degree or above.
Classroom Environment and art classes taught:
The art classroom is on the southwest corner of the building, and has several large windows that provide it with lots
of natural light. There are six tables, and each has a large plastic crayon of a different color hanging above it that
indicates which table it is (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple tables). Most of the walls have cabinets and
drawers lining them and are filled with a wide variety of art supplies. There are two short sinks on the north side of
the room, and the east wall has a smartboard and document camera, while the west wall has a teacher desk, a
whiteboard, and a retractable projector screen. Two storage rooms are also attached to the art room, one of which
has a kiln. Student work is kept in a tub for each class and separated into folders that correspond to each table. There
are 27 classes in total, and each one meets for 45 minutes once a week. This includes four Kindergarten, four 1st
grade, five 2nd grade, four 3rd grade, five 4th grade, and five 5th grade classes. Every class within each grade level is
taught the same lesson at the same time, so six different lessons are taught each day, but this same day is repeated
for the whole week.
School-wide Policies for Management, Safe Schools, Conflict Resolution and Student with Special Needs:
The main management strategy at Zach is Positive Behavior Interventions and Support (PBIS), which is a systematic
process of encouraging and recognizing positive behavior. The organizing theme for PBIS at Zach is ROAR, which
stands for Respectful, Organized, Attentive, Responsible. All conversations with students regarding behavior are tied
to ROAR.
Zach, along with all other schools in Poudre School District, is part of the Safe Schools program for reporting issues of
bullying or other safety concerns. This also includes access to counselors for conflict resolution. Zach especially
focuses on differentiating between bothering and bullying behavior and addressing each according to its severity.
At Zach, parents can volunteer as a part of Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), be a member of the School
Accountability Committee, and volunteer in a classroom.
Zach has a Special Education department with staff and paraprofessionals. Students who are higher needs have a para
with them for support in their regular classrooms, but not during Specials (Art, PE, Music, Tech, Library) because that
is the time when classroom teachers and paraprofessionals have their planning period. This can make it difficult to

meet these students needs during Specials. However, Zach has a very low number of students with special needs.
The school does not specialize in or focus on any one particular disability.
