Many aspects of Carnegie Mellon interest me: its performance-based curriculum, alumni success, professional-tier productions, masterclasses, showcases, and the four-stage education policy. All aspects of CMU come together to form one perfect education. Carnegie Mellon University is my top college choice because its academic and artistic playground would allow me to delve into my creativity and foster growth in all areas of my life. The notoriety of Carnegie Mellons performance-based four-year curriculum draws me to the school. In my artistic experience, I have participated in, composed, directed, choreographed, and accompanied shows. From age 5, I've been playing piano, and from age 7, Ive performed in professional equity-tier plays and musicals; ever since then, I've devoted my life to the stage. With so many opportunities in film, opera, dance, plays, and musicals, I would no doubt find a sense of belonging. The realistic audition, callback, and performance experiences will prepare me for my tough but rewarding profession after college. The four stages at Carnegie Mellon layer perfectly and would allow me to individually work every step of the theatrical process. By providing an education that develops every type of performancedance, film, plays, masterclasses, and student productionsI would become strong in all aspects. When considering the success that CMU alumni have in the professional world, the performance-based four-stage curriculum that exists on-campus provides students with the instruction they need to excel. Not only does the performance-based curriculum attract me, but the university supports all aspects of a production; through makeup, composition, playwriting, and technical theatre courses, I would become a better all-around actor. I wrote my first song in the fifth grade: a recorder trio on notebook paper; Im no mozart. My composition skills have, however, grown since then, and Ive written two musicals performed with the local professional theatre. I have also casted, accompanied, music-directed, directed, choreographed, and costumed shows. CMUs academics would take my minimal previous experience and help make it something great. I especially find the ScotchNSoda and Playground programs interesting because of the opportunities they offer to individuals like me who want to explore other aspects of the theatre outside of performance. Whether it be a "25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee"-style beauty pageant with a twist of Scott Westerfeld's "Uglies" or a "one-man show" with a cast full of women, I have many ideas that could become realities at CMU. The college life at Carnegie is truly a playground; through experimentation, the school achieves creative and prosperous results. Carnegie Mellon University provides students with an array of theatrical and educational opportunities, andthrough the curriculum and organizations on-campus-the school would offer me a chance to succeed in all aspects.
