Direction Sheet Explained

This document provides direction on how to complete a direction sheet when conducting a surveying project with multiple setup locations. The steps include: 1) Recording observed directions and station information from surveys; 2) Calculating joins and corrections between setups; 3) Applying corrections to calculate provisional and final directions at each station; 4) Comparing final backward directions to calculate an overall misclosure; 5) Dividing the misclosure to determine a correction to apply starting from the first setup in increasing amounts. The process is repeated until the final backward directions match within one minute to complete the direction sheet.

Fill in the information obtained by surveying or given to you in the first two columns
Calculate the joins required for the first and last setup
and write the directions in the last colum in the corresponding positions
Calculate the corrections: the joins direction minus the observed direction
for the first and last setup
Calculate a mean correction for the first and last setup separately
Apply the correction to the direction of the unknown point
at that setup (the first and last setup) and write the corrected direction
in the back direction colum
Subtract or Add 180 ( depending on the direction) from the corrected back direction
and bring it to the forward direction colum at the next setup
calculate the provisional correction: the forward direction minus the observered direction
and write the correction in the provisional correction colum
Apply the correction to the direction of the next unknown point
and write the corrected direction in the back direction colum

Repeat step 6 to 8 until you reach the last setup

Compare the two directions in the backward column. They must differ with 180,
the minutes should be the same if they vary it must be with one minute.
The seconds will vary
Now subtract the seconds only, the back directions at the last setup
minus the back direction of the previous setup. Write this down.
This is the misclosure.
Calculate the correction by divide the misclosure by the amount of setups
Apply the correction at the first setup
The correction doubles for the next setup e.g. +3+3=+6
The correction at the next setups increase with the value of the correction at the first
setup e.g. +6+3=+9, +9+3=+12 est..
You apply no correction for the last setup.
You use the back direction as the final direction
Calculate the final direction at each setup
by adding the final correction to the back direction
