In a constant head permeability test, a sample 8cm long was tested in a permeameter with an inside diameter of
5cm. After a state of steady flow was established under a head of 50cm, a discharge of 120cm 3 was collected in
30sec. What is the coefficient of permeability in 10 -2cm/sec?
2. An open cylindrical tank 800mm in diameter and 2000mm high contains water to a depth of 1.6m. It is rotated
about its vertical axis at 13 rad/s. How many cubic meters of waters are spilled?
Situation 1: At 2.04 cu.m./s water flows thru a 600mm pipe from reservoir A to reservoir B, 60m apart vertically. The loss
of head from A down to a point just before the turbine is 10 times the velocity head in the pipe and from a point right after
the turbine to reservoir B is 0.2 times the velocity head.
4. What energy is given up by the water to the turbine in joules per newton?
Situation 3: A gate having the shape shown in the figure below is located in the vertical side of an open tank containing
water. The gate is mounted on a horizontal shaft. Refer to figure below:
9. When the water level is at the top of the gate, determine the magnitude of the fluid force on the rectangular portion
of the gate above the shaft.
10. Determine the magnitude of the fluid force on the semicircular portion of the gate below the shaft.
11. For the same fluid depth determine the moment of the force acting on the semicircular portion of the gate about
the shaft.
Situation 4: Three pipes 1, 2 , and 3 are connected in parallel. If the combined discharge of the three pipes is equal to 0.61
m3/s, compute the following assuming all pipes have equal friction factor f:
Situation 5: An open 1-m-diameter, 1.6-m-high cylindrical tank is partially filled with water and is rotated about its
vertical central axis at an angular speed of 100rpm.
16. If water is rotated again, at what angular velocity, in rad/s, will the bottom of the tank first be exposed?
17. If the tank is full of water, at what angular velocity, in rpm, will the bottom of the tank be rotated such that 314
liters of water will be spilled?
Situation 6: Soil investigation at a site gave the following information. Fine sand exists to a depth of 10.6 m and below this
lies a soft clay layer 7.60 m thick. The water table is at 4.60 m below the ground surface. The submerged unit weight of
sand is 10.4 kN/m3, and the wet unit weight above the water table is 17.6 kN/m 3. The water content of the normally
consolidated clay wn = 40%, its liquid limit wt = 45%, and the specific gravity of the solid particles is 2.78. The proposed
construction will transmit a net stress of 120 kN/m 2 at the center of the clay layer.
19. The effective vertical stress in kPa at the mid height of the clay layer is
22. The clay has preconsolidation pressure of 190 kPa. Assume Cs=0.2Cc
23. The clay has preconsolidation pressure of 170 kPa. Assume Cs=0.2Cc
