The article discusses nine works by Francis Bacon that are on display at the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts in Norwich, UK, spanning two decades of the artist's career. It also mentions how two of Bacon's works are included in an exhibition on Alberto Giacometti.

Seven works by Francis Bacon are part of the Sainsbury Centre's permanent collection, and two more ('Study of a Nude' and 'Three Studies for a Portrait of Isabel Rawsthorne') are featured in a temporary exhibition on Alberto Giacometti.

Bacon met Giacometti in a cafe in Paris where he approached the sculptor to tell him how much he admired his work. They found similarities in their lifestyles of not accumulating possessions but being generous to friends.

23 April and will run through to 29 August. The inclusion of Bacons works
in this Giacometti show is to show the Swiss Sculptors impact on Britain.

Bacon met Giacometti in a caf in Paris. He approached the sculptor and told
him how much he admired his work. Bacon also liked Giacomettis lifestyle
in that despite his wealth he continued to work in his small, cluttered studio
near Montparnasse. His lack of interest in official honours and success also
appealed to Bacon. Parallels can be made between both artists lives in that
neither accumulated many possessions but were extremely generous to
friends and liked to frequent good restaurants and leave huge tips.

The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts is an inspirational public art museum
situated on the campus of the University of East Anglia in Norwich.Gifted by
Sir Robert and Lady Lisa Sainsbury to the University in 1973, the Sainsbury
Collection includesthe largest group of early paintings by Francis Bacon in
Northern Europe.

During the 1950s, Robert and Lisa Sainsbury developed a close relationship
with Francis Bacon, cemented in 1955 when Lisa commissioned him to make
a portrait of Sir Robert, the only time Bacon agreed to such a venture. In the
same year, Bacon began a series of portraits of Lisa of which Sketch for a
Portrait of Lisa is the earliest surviving example.

Curated by artist Chris Stevens, REALITY brings together over 50 works cele-
brating British painting with some of the best and most influential artist of

world, testifying the strength of painting as a medium and the impact of Brit-
ish painting today.

The artists in REALITY tackle a diverse range of subjects, referencing the

body, relationships, history, politics, war, the urban environment and social
issues. Despite thesedifferent references, the works are all united by two
things the harsh realities that have concerned key British artists over the
decades and the simple act of painting.

cludesWalter Sickert, Lucian Freud and David Hockney, alongside contem-
porary painters including Ken Currie, George Shaw, Caroline Walker, and
many others. For more information please visit theexhibition site.
