Begum Rokeya was a famous writer and a social worker.She lived in undivided Bengal in the
early 20th century.She believed that women should have the,same,rights,and,opportunities as men
have in the society. So she fought for their cause throughout her life .Begum Rokeya was born in a
village called Pairabondh, Rangpur in 1880. Her
father Jahiruddin Muhammad Abu Ali Haider Saber was an educated landlord.
Rokeya was married to Khan Bahadur Sakhawat Hussain in 1896. Her husband
was the Deputy Magistrate of Bhagalpur, now a district in the Indian state of
Bihar. He was very cooperative, and always encouraged Rokeya to go on with her
activities.Many upper class Muslims of Bengal at that time learnt Arabic and Persian as
medium of education and communication. But Rokeya had great love for her
mother tongue. She learnt Bangla and English from her eldest brother Ibrahim.

The name of our country is Bangladesh.It became independent in 1971.Dhaka is its Capital.Bangladesh is a
small country.Its land area is 147570 squre kilometres.But it has a large population .About 140 million people live
here.Bangladesh is mainly an agricultural country.Its main crops are rice,suger-cane and tea.Many kinds of fruits
also grow here.Juckfruits,mangoes,bananas,pine-apples,guavas and water-melons are the most common.My
country has also many rivers . the main rivers are Padma, the Megna, the Jamuna and the Karnaphuly.There are
many varieties of fish in these rivers.We have many interesting places.The Sundarbans, Rangamati,Coxs Bazar are
very attractive. The Royal Bengal Tiger lives in the Sundarbans. Coxs Bazar is the longest sea beach in the world.It
is about 120 kilometres long.Many people visit these places every year. Bangladesh is a peaceful country.People
from different countries live here in peace. I love my country very much.
