students telling them information and moving on. Teaching is building a child up, creating
backbones, not only sharing knowledge but teaching a student confidence in themselves that they
can learn and guiding them through the rest. I want to be the teacher that students can look back
on and feel thankful for. I want to make a lifelong impact in a positive way. So how do I do that?
A theory that has greatly influenced my teaching philosophy is Social Cognitive Theory
developed by Albert Bandura. The theory explains that students learn through social interactions
with others, bringing together that educating does not only center on the lesson plan. Banduras
idea is that learning occurs when students observe the behavior of others. My understanding of
this is that to leave one student behind could poorly influence an entire class. Students especially
in the primary level are all still learning who they are. If they do not have good examples in class
they will not have one to go by. As the teacher it is my job to be that positive influence that they
can appreciate, respect and look up too. I will teach by being an example to my students, I will
model positive behaviors that I hope encourages them to grow and learn. After all, we can not
expect our students to learn such behaviors from a book. If I want my students to enjoy reading I
believe I should show them how fun I believe reading is, If I want them to eat healthy I must model
good eating habits, etc. It's important to never downsize the influence that I or any teacher and/or
adult may have on a young mind and to never forget that this is our future were teaching.
another of the many approaches to teaching that I strongly believe is a great way of teaching to the
whole child and creating an engaging and welcoming atmosphere that students will thrive in. Im
sure there are many people like me who can remember walking into a classroom and seeing the
desk rearranged into groups and wondering what fun activity they were going to do. I believe

having the students in a position that they can be in a group and everyone feels a part of it can
make a huge impact in both individual and group projects as well instill a sense of belonging and
community in the classroom. The Student-Centered Classroom shows students that the teacher is
not the most important person in the room, they are. I believe this allows students to feel much
more engaged and a part of the experience. I believe that when a student doesn't feel special or
enjoy the lesson either through movement or interest then it becomes significantly more difficult
for the student to focus and learn. Of course a class can't always be in groups, nor expect to do
something fun and exciting everyday there will be times that require independent practice in which
I will have assigned seating most likely in some type of group that is the least distracting but still
allows students the opportunity to socialize and learn from one another. I will be sure to take into
consideration all needs when designing my classroom so that it accommodates to every student's
style of learning including those who are ELL and/or special needs.
As a teacher I will not only set goals for my students but for myself as well. I know that
together we will be successful, no matter how hard the journey may be we will get there together.
I will promise to learn from them as much if not more than they will learn from me. I will supply
them with the building blocks needed to succeed and to become the person they are and watch as
they build those blocks together. I want my students to learn more than what is in the textbooks
and state standards, I desire for their personalities to blossom and to become independent,
confident, respectful young children with a love of others and a love for learning. As a kindergarten
teacher I am the second teacher that my students will know and I will wear that responsibility
proudly. I will teach from my heart with love, respect, encouragement and compassion because I
know I set the stage for the rest of their educational career. With a strong foundation such as this
The experience I have as a preschool teacher as well as the many education classes, field
experiences and training courses has opened my eyes to so much more than I could have ever
expected. It is through these experiences that I have gained an ever greater desire to teach, to be
something bigger than myself. I have learned to have patience both with students and myself, to
never give up no matter how hard the situation may seem, to be confident in my abilities and to be
Education classes have shown me how in depth and how many decisions a teacher is responsible
for making along with how they influence each other. These experiences combined have prepared
me for a career in education. In my work as a preschool teacher I have been able to attempt different
methods and see the impact first hand. Teaching will be a journey but it is one that I am excited to
take.
