EQUIPMENTS AND GEAR UP IN

BASKETBALL

Ball - the most important thing for training is the ball. For practicing,
one can play with a rubber ball. For professional competitions, they
use an inflated ball made of leather.

Standard Mens Basketball (Size 7) - This is the size used by the


NCAA men, boys high school, as well as the NBA. It has a
circumference between 29.5 and 30 inches and weighs between 20
and 22 ounces.
Standard Womens Basketball (Size 6) - This is the basketball used by
NCAA women, girls high school, and the WNBA. It is between 28.5
and 29 inches in circumference and weighs 18-20 ounces.
Junior Basketball (Size 5) - The junior size basketball is for boys and
girls between the ages of 8-12. It is between 27.25 to 27.75 inches in
circumference and weighs 14-16 ounces
Mini Basketball (Size 3)- For young children ages 5-8, the mini ball is
22 to 22.5 inches in circumference and weighs 10.5 to 11.25 ounces.

Basketball Shooting Equipment - the hoop or basket is a horizontal


metallic rim, circular in shape. This rim is attached to a net and helps
one score a point. The rim is mounted about 4 feet inside the baseline
and 10 feet above the court.

Basketball Court - the basketball court is the next important thing for
shooting balls in this game. The court is usually made of wooden
floorboard. The court size is about 28m x 17m according to the
International standards. The National Basketball Association (NBA)
regulation states the floor dimension as 29m x 15m. The standard
court is rectangular in shape and has baskets placed on opposite
ends.

Backboard - the backboard is the rectangular board that is placed


behind the ring. It helps give better rebound to the ball. The backboard
is about 1800mm in size horizontally and 1050mm vertically. Many
times, backboards are made of acrylic, aluminum, steel or glass.
Scoreboard - displays the time left in the period and running scored of
the both team.
Protective Gears and Accessories - protective gears and accessories
include goggles, face masks, mouth guards, knee pads or brace,
headbands, arm sleeves, wristbands etc. Not all players wear
necessarily all these things. They use them only when they required
them.

Uniforms - the most important requirement for a team is to have a


uniform. this helps one differentiate teams from another one. A
uniform consists of a jersey (shirt), shorts, numbers and last name on
the front and back of the shirts for identification.

Basketball Shoes - One needs specialized shoes when playing


basketball. It should be able to give better support to the ankle as
compared to running shoes. The basketball shoes should be
high-tipped shoes and provide extra comfort during a game. These
shoes are specially designed to maintain high traction on the
basketball court.

Basketball Socks - Many basketball players double up their socks to


absorb the constant impacts of the game and protect against
blisters. Wearing two pairs of socks also protects the ankle if
you're wearing low-top basketball shoes by providing additional
cushioning and padding.

Uniform of Officials - Officials wear a uniform prescribed by their


respective governing body. Usually, officials are dressed in white and
black stripped shirts, black pants and black shoes. NBA officials wear
gray shirts, black pants and black shoes.

Whistle - Basketball referee carries a whistle which he blows every


time he needs to stop a play.

Scorebook - Score book is used by the scorekeeper who writes down


scores and stats on it. Score book is something where you find
summary of the whole game, names of the players, their positions and
jersey numbers, details of each quarter and half etc
Shot Clock and Game Clock - Shot clock and game clock are
operated by timekeepers. Game clock records the overall time of the
game while shot clock counts down the 24 second shot clock
