Direct and Reported Speech
I. Objectives :
III. Procedures
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Prayer
2. Checking of Attendance
3. Review
B. Motivation
The teacher will ask some questions to a student, then call another student to repeat
the answer of his/her classmate. (The teacher will do it two to three times.)
The teacher will then present the lesson to the class by asking the students of their
observation first.
C. Activities
(The teacher will discuss direct and reported speech and give some examples in each.
As the lesson progresses, the teacher will call some students to give their own
examples.)
Examples:
1. Mario said, "I didn't know you had so much faith in me."
In reported speech, we convey the message of the speaker in our own words to another
person.
Examples:
2. John told Gloria that he had lost his job a week ago.
REMEMBER:
In writing a direct speech, you have to copy the exact words as what the speaker
says.
Verbs that can be used to introduce direct speech include says, said, and told.
Open and close quotation marks are also used to enclose the exact words of the
speaker.
In writing a reported speech, use the past tense of the verb to indicate past
action since reported speech is used to talk about the past.
