Activity Sheet 4

Two oceanic plates are converging, with one sliding underneath the other. As the plates collide, the subducting plate will be forced deeper into the mantle through the geologic processes of subduction and mountain building. Compressional forces will cause the overriding plate to fold and uplift, forming a volcanic mountain range at the surface. As the subducting plate abruptly rises, it could displace a large volume of ocean water and form a tsunami.

ACTIVITY SHEET NO. 4

Name: Score:
Year and Section: Date:
Subject: SCIENCE Type of Activity: Exercises
Activity Title: Head-On Collision (Convergence of two Oceanic Plates)
Learning Target: Explain the processes that occur along convergent boundaries.
Determine the consequences of colliding plates.
References: Title: Science 10 Learner’s Materials
Page Numbers: 18 – 22
Exercises:
Q1. What are the geologic processes/events that will occur because of this plate
movement?
Q2. What geologic features might form at the surface of Plate A?
Q3. If the edge of Plate A suddenly flicks upward, a large amount of water may
be displaced. What could be formed at the surface of the ocean?
