Appendix 4 Calculation of Lateral Load Capacity (Fixed Head Condition)

Pile diameter (B) = 1.0 m


Soil Type - overconsolidated clay
Grade of Concrete, f ck = M40
Grade of Steel, f y = 500

Concrete Elastic Modulus E = 5000 (f ck) = 31623 N/mm²
= 31623 MN/mm²

Moment of Inertia I = 0.049087 m⁴


Unconfined compressive strength, qu 185 kN/m²
(Table 4, of Annex C, pg. 12 -
Modulus of subgrade reaction K = 6.66
IS 2911 (Part 1/Sec 1): 2010
R = ( E x I / KB )1/4 = 3.9 m
Free length of pile above ground (L1) = 0.0 m
Total Length of pile (L) = 15.0 m
2R = 7.8 m
Since, L > 2R, pile may be considered as long elastic pile
(refer Fig. 3 of Annex C, pg. 13 -
For fixed head pile, Lf / R = 2 IS 2911 (Part 1/Sec 1): 2010

Thus, Lf = 7.8 m
Allowable deflection = 0.01 m (1% pile diameter,cl 709.3.5.2,IRC 78,amendments)
Lateral capacity of fixed head pile = 0.39 MN
