REFLECTION PAPER

PLANT DESIGN

Plant design is one of the significant courses in Chemical Engineering

curriculum. It is the chief course in the latter year of a Chemical Engineering student.
This will require the application of all the courses you previously took depending on the
topic or design project you choose. During our course, we divided the whole class by 5
groups and every meeting we have a discussion and consultation about the status of
our plant design project. Production of Hydrochloric Acid via Salt-Sulfuric was our
approved topic. Our professor, Engr.Lina Dela Cruz gave us a list of the content of the
whole project so that we will be on the right track and to help us easily monitor the
status of our project. Our project started of course by carefully choosing our topic, we
had the title defense first and then Market Analysis, Equipment Design and so on. One
thing I learned and appreciate during our plant design class was that, it’s not all about
how perfect, complicated or brilliant your project was, but the molding of your character
during the making of the project. For me, the patience, decision-making and how you
will cooperate with your group mates were the main foundations of your design project.

SEPARATION PROCESSES

I learned that this course covers the general principles of separation by

equilibrium and rate processes. Topics include staged cascades and applications to
distillation, absorption, adsorption, and membrane processes. Phase equlibria and the
role of diffusion are also covered. During our class, our professor, Engr. Robert Delfin,
did some activities to help us learn on our own and not depending alone on what he
was teaching us. He gave us some group assignments for us to engage with our
classmates as well. Solved problems that helped us practice solving separation
processes problems and weekly competency exams.
My suggestion about the course is that, maybe they can add, be more visual or
provide images or videos in discussing so that the students can imagine and see how
the separation really happens and will be more entertaining to learn.

PARTICLE TECHNOLOGY

Particle Technology is a broad course but we focused more on the particle size
analysis packed and fluidized beds, storage and transport, separation (filtration and gas
cyclones). During our class, our professor, Engr. Michael Ramos focused more on the
basic concepts of the said course which we highly appreciated. He also provided
activities that requires group discussion and gave group assignments as well. He
always also discussed the solutions to the problems that he gave us in our quizzes. One
of my favorite topics in Partech course is the particle size analysis that covers the
concept of mesh, which I mostly used and apply in my current job.

Safety in the Process Industry

I learned that this course aims to ensure the safety of people involved in process
plants, especially those who face its immediate hazards and dangers. This course
covers topics such as the history of process hazards and attitudes in health and safety;
laws concerned with the health and safety in the process industry; and the definitions of
different terms related to health and safety. It also discusses the electrical, chemical,
and physical hazards in the process industries, as well as the dangers of flammability
and corrosion. It talks about hazard control design; protective instrumentation; and
maintenance and inspection. As well as topics related to the management of health and
safety in industry processes such as emergency planning; safety training; and
protection the working environment. The course is not just for Chemical Engineering but
also recommended for people concerned in the management, development, planning,
design, construction, operation, inspection and maintenance of process plants, as well
as those who oversee its safety. During our class, our professor, Engr. Lina Dela Cruz
passionately discussed these things to us, that safety of the people is the most
important thing in the process plants. We also had our group reporting and situational
kind of exams which I find engaging and helpful.

My suggestion regarding the course is that, may be they can provide seminars or
plant tours that will discussed or show the importance of safety in process plants.
