LIS-60050-001-201780: RESEARCH AND ASSESSMENT IN LIS

Research Proposal

Project learning outcome- Critique and synthesize research and identify appropriate
research methodologies to solve problems in the field

In LIS 60050 Research and Assessment in LIS, I wrote a research proposal to examine the
effectiveness of library technology programs and classes for senior citizens. This project helped
me to identify the steps needed for conducting successful research. After formulating a
hypothesis I examined previous studies to produce a literature review and inform my own work.
I learned about the various types of research methods and determined which approach was best
suited to my project. I developed survey questionnaires and outlined how the data, both
qualitative and quantitative would be analyzed. I addressed the potential limitations of the study
and what steps I would take to preserve the quality of my research. I concluded with a reiteration
of the importance of the work and how my research project could be of value not only to the
field but could have an impact and benefit to society at large.

LIS-60618-002-201860: INFORMATION LITERACY

Information Literacy Module

Critique and synthesize research and identify appropriate research methodologies to

solve problems in the field

This research project evaluates a technology use and online information literacy program for
senior citizens to determine what types of instruction/ approaches are most effective, if the
program is effective and well attended, and if future programming of this type would be
beneficial. It has a developed rationale and problem statement. A literature review examines
similar studies. What information and sources of data collection are addressed. Methods for the
organization and the possible implications for its interpretation will provide valuable insight for
the field.

LIS-60608-001-201810: THE PUBLIC LIBRARY

Toolkit creation

Project learning outcome - Identify needs and connect individuals and communities with
information that engages and empowers them.

This project looks at the needs and responsibilities of adult services librarians and focuses
specifically on the topics of leadership, public libraries, programming/reference services and
current technology. The toolkit contains links to valuable resources for information
professionals. In completing this project I needed to examine the roles and responsibilities of
adult services librarians, determine which aspects to focus on, and then research to find the best
quality resources available. Every resource in the toolkit contains a brief description of the types
of information contained and it what area it might be helpful.

LIS-60003-001-201680: INFO TECH FOR LIBRARY PROF

Evaluate systems and technologies relevant to a particular information context.

This report evaluates the technology services offered at the Middlefield Library with emphasis
on services provided for patrons who do not have access to and / or experience with technology.
The demographics in that area suggest that access to technology and information literacy skills
are important services for the community. The Middlefield Library also serves a large Amish
population, the Amish have little or no experience in using technology yet are being forced to
utilize it to get by in modern society.
The criteria examined includes determining if the library provides sufficient numbers of
computers, if available computers have up to date hardware and software, If patrons have
internet access on both library and personal devices, If there is adequate assistance available such
as computer classes and one on one assistance, and If the library meets the needs of the
community it serves with regards to technological access and assistance.
This project helped me to understand how to analyze and evaluate the needs of a particular
information context. I learned what to look for and how to effectively assess the available
technologies in that environment.

LIS-60040-002-201780: INFO INSTITUTIONS PROFESSIONS

Annotated Bibliography
Analyze and engage in the changing cultural, educational, and social roles and
responsibilities of librarians/information professionals and the environments they
work in within the global society.

For this project I needed to examine an institution to be recommended for the mayors
outstanding institutions list. Criteria evaluated included:

 The larger environment of the information institution including the people served
 Funding sources
 Details of the information institution (its mission, and organizational structure)
 The similarities and differences of the institution compared to related institutions
 Values and ethics important to this institution
 Skills and roles of the information professionals in the institution

Through this project I was able to see how libraries fit within a larger social context and how the
role and responsibilities of information professionals fits into this environment.

LIS-60636-001-201860: KNOWLEDGE ORG SYSTEMS

Evaluate systems and technologies relevant to a particular information context.

This project involved organizing content for a digital collection. It involved creating taxonomies,
pick lists, facets, synonym rings, and using controlled vocabulary. Familiarity with digital
systems and storage is crucial in our increasingly technological environment. Through this
project I gained a knowledge and appreciation of the work involved in creating web content, an
understanding of how taxonomies and pick lists function, and the importance of using controlled
vocabularies.

LIS-61095-002-201810: ST: LEADERSHIP IN LIBRARIES

Apply the field’s foundational theories, principles, values, ethics, and skills to
everyday practice.

Final paper- A leaders vision

This course provided valuable perspectives and approaches that I can utilize as I advance into
higher management positions. In this final project I examined different approaches and
perspectives to leadership. Leadership involves a high degree of ethical responsibility. In this
final essay I shared how I was able to use the skills that I have learned to assist in creating a
cross training program in my current role. This program has reinforced the value of service,
broadened the knowledge and skills of staff, and encouraged lifelong learning.

LIS-60601-002-201860: INFO SOURCES AND REF SERVICES

Lib Guide

Analyze and engage in the changing cultural, educational, and social roles and
responsibilities of librarians/information professionals and the environments they
work in within the global society.

Professional competency - Patron Awareness- Knowledge and awareness of the attributes

and library needs of particular patron groups and the ability to apply that knowledge through
materials, services, and programming

This Lib Guide is intended for information professionals. It addresses resources for program
planning and services for older adults. As our society ages and this demographic grows
increasingly larger, services for older adults will have a large impact on the educational
responsibilities and social roles of information professionals in public libraries. It provides links
to research, guidelines, toolkits, further education opportunities and other valuable resources.
This LibGuide provides valuable starting points for developing a comprehensive approach to
older adult services.
