Competency Area: MCT/MST Lesson Observation #2

This document summarizes an observation of a grade 4 math lesson on multiplying using the base 10 system. The student teacher effectively introduced the lesson and modeled examples. Students then worked collaboratively in groups at their level on a workbook activity. Most areas were assessed as satisfactory, with students highly engaged and well-behaved. Areas for development included making the group work more collaborative and having students present solutions instead of just coloring answers. The focus for the next lesson should be on stronger lesson closure and more authentic collaborative work.

Overview of the lesson: Lesson was creatively introduced. The lesson focused on multiplying
using the base 10 system. The teacher models the lesson using 2 examples. After the examples,
the students transitioned to their group, based on level, to complete their workbook activity.
Students were called to solve some problems on the board. The class was highly engaged and
very well behaved. The use of the bell was effective.
Activity 2 did promote collaboration. The students were engaged in dialogue while solving the
problems.

Areas for development: The students were in placed in groups, but the work did not promote
collaboration. The students simply solved some problems in the workbook. Why were grade 4
students coloring the answers? Perhaps, they could have glued the answers under the right
number using a scissor and a glue stick.
What
