Observation 2

This document summarizes a lesson observation of a student teacher teaching a grade 3 math lesson on multiplication. The observer gave the student teacher excellent ratings in all competency areas. In the overview, the observer notes the teacher had a good introduction and used pictorial and abstract representations effectively. The teacher demonstrated good instructional strategies and behavior management. However, the areas for development were that the lesson relied too much on direct instruction and it was unclear what type of differentiation was used. The focus for the next lesson should be on differentiation.

Overview of the lesson: Very good introduction to the lesson. The lesson was modeled through
pictorial and abstract representation. The GRRM model was evident throughout the lesson.
Teacher has a very good grasp of instructional strategies to manage learning. The students were
well behaved and followed the class rules while developing basic of multiplication equations using
array.
Each activity provides its own level of challenge. The dry eraser board activity was well executed,
and it was well thought out. Words problem number three is a higher-level thinking questions for
grade three students.
Transitions were efficient.

Areas for development:

Too much time was spent on direct instruction. The lesson could have less teacher centered and
more student centered.
Lesson was differentiated, but it wasn’t clear as to the type of differentiation. Was it
differentiated based on student’s interest?
Focus for next lesson:
Differentiation
