Salina Central High School Band Handbook 1

WRITTEN FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL BAND STUDENTS AND PARENTS
Every band member and parent entering the Central High School Band needs to use this document as a resource to
make sure you are as prepared as you can be for the upcoming band season. Whether a new student is transferring
from a different school, or is an incoming freshman, this handbook will help make that transition to the CHS band
easier. The CHS band member, no matter what instrument you play, are THE most important part of this group. Let
Mr. Rohrer or Mr. Montoya know if you have any questions concerning your role and this program.

F. Shoes

8
We have had to change our shoe policy.  The band will no longer purchase shoes for its members – even
when we receive money from individual parents.  We do have a surplus of used shoes that your student
could borrow for the year (or their entire band career).  We will be checking out these shoes during band
camp.

If you wish to purchase shoes for band, the main requirements are: 1) dress shoes – no sneakers, 2) all black
(including the soles).  There have been shoes sold in Salina that have worked in the past (Target, Walmart).
The best prices have been around $20.0030.00.  The company that we have purchased shoes from for the
past 23 years is American Band.  Their website is www.americanband.com.  Any style of band shoe they
sell will work (Drillmaster, Dinkle, Speedster, Viper, MTX, Pinnacle or Impact).

It should be noted that the proper uniform includes black socks.  Please do not allow your son or daughter to
show up to performances wearing white socks.

Band shoes are a part of the grade.  Students will need to store them in their hat/shoe locker when not in use.

Thanks for your support!  We’re looking forward to a great year!!!

Lettering System

before school starts.

Fundraising will begin two years prior to the trip, and individual accounts will be established at
that time.

- Any wind or percussion student that takes private lessons may enter as a solo. If the student is
not taking private lessons, he or she must work with a director at least 3 times during third nine

ensemble is either the person who organized the group, or is the higher chair player in the
section.
- The directors will determine whether or not solos or ensembles will attend Regional festival.

band activity.
- A solo or ensemble is a requirement for lettering in band

Transportation Request form from the school website).
2. State
- These will be virtually identical to the district requirements.
- Auditions will be held at Lakewood Middle School.
- Results will be available a few days after auditions.

Fundraising 17
A. General Guidelines
1. There will be several types of fundraising available for the Central Band student to
participate in.
- We will be participating in Dillon’s Cards, Butter Braids, Great American Opportunity,
Concession Stands and the SC mailing.
2. Two years before the major trip. Band fund raising will escalate considerably. At that
time, the students will have personal accounts established, and any fundraising they do
will go towards their own personal accounts. The two years immediately following a trip,
the fundraising will account for adjunct teachers’ salaries, clinicians, special
performances, extra transportation, etc. Eighth grade students will be included in the
fundraising activities two years before the major trip. The amount of profit varies from
one fundraiser to the next.
3. Profit shares are an option through some of the fundraising companies. These monies
will be made available as soon as everyone has paid their proceeds from the materials
sold. The profit shares will be available for only 30 days after everyone has paid. After
that time, the profit shares will go back into the activity account.
4. Any student that does not come up with the full share of proceeds for the materials they
sold is subject to having grades held until they come up with the money. Profit shares
will not be available to students who turn their money in late.
5. When individual accounts are established, strict guidelines will be enforced. For
instance, there will be no shared monies between accounts, no interest accrued, and
students will not be able to handle any of their money. If a student quits band and they
have money in their account, that money will go into the general fund.
Fall Fundraising
- Dillons Cards (see below), Great American Opportunity, Butter Braids, SC Band Mailing (Trip
Year Only)
Spring Fundraising

Dillon’s Fund raising (Updated 53118) 18

Here are instructions for the Dillon’s card and how you can use it to fund raise :
1) Obtain a “plus card” (you may already have one). It’s the one with a picture of an apple and it says Plus
Shopper’s card on it. It’s red with a black background.
2) Have a valid email address. This can be secured from an online service and be anonymous.
3) Create a personalized account at the Dillon’s website.

Here’s how you create an account at the Dillon’s website:
1) Go to the website: www.dillons.com/communityrewards
2) Click on “Register” at the top of the page.
3) Enter your email address, password and zip code (select your preferred store). Then put down whether
you wish to receive email updates from Dillons.
4) Click on “Create Account” at the bottom of the page.
5) You will receive an email confirmation to your inbox. To activate the account, click on the link in the body
of the email and enter your sign-in information to confirm.
6) For any questions concerning this procedure, call 800-576-4377

Then, to enroll in the Central Band’s community rewards program you do this:
1) Go to the website: www.dillons.com/communityrewards
2) Sign in using the information you already gave (above). Go to My Account – click on it.
3) Click on “enroll now.”
4) Update your information. Then, enter this number: NL955 and search.
5) Select your Organization (Salina Central Band) and click on “Enroll.”
6) The last item to take care of is be sure and let Mr. Rohrer know (email – ben.rohrer@usd305.com) that you
have enrolled in the program and verify your card number. You will need to tell him the amount your card
earned each quarter. Take a screen shot of your account page and send it to the above email for Mr. Rohrer.
This way the money you raise will go into YOUR account and not the general fund. Thanks!!

You’re in!!  You will now get funds raised into your account every time you use your plus card.
