Heat Load Calculation

Meat Storage (Rooms 11-22)
Basis for Estimate
Volume = 18.20

1. Transmission Load – heat load through walls


 Use 6-in thick polyurethane
 Assume perfect insulation on walls other than hallways

For walls exposed to Hallways 11, 12, and 13:

Outside temperature = 10⁰C = 50⁰F Inside temperature = -20⁰C = -4⁰F

Temperature reduction = 54⁰F

Using Table 1 – Wall Heat Loads (Page 13), by interpolation:

Transmission load = 25.6 BTU/day per square foot of surface

For walls exposed to Hallways 14 and 15

Outside temperature = 0⁰C = 32⁰F Inside temperature = -20⁰C = -4⁰F

Temperature reduction = 36⁰F

Using Table 1 – Wall Heat Loads (Page 13), by interpolation:

Transmission load = 5.559 BTU/day per square foot of surface

For Rooms 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, 21: 1 wall exposed to Hallway 15 or Hallway 14

Transmission load = 5.559 BTU/day per square foot of surface x (59.7142ft x 42.653ft)

Transmission load = 14158.65084 BTU/day

For rooms 13, 16, 19, 22: 1 wall exposed to Hallway 13, 1 wall exposed to Hallway 15 or 14

Transmission load = 5.559 BTU/day per square foot of surface x (59.7142ft x 42.653ft)
+ 25.6 BTU/day per square foot of surface x (87.1105ft x 42.653ft)

Transmission load = 109276.0692 BTU/day

2. Air change load


Average air change
Since room temp is below 0⁰C, use Table 5 (page 14)

Volume of room = 59.7142ft x 87.11055ft x 42.653ft = 221869.6799 cubic ft.


By interpolation:
No. of air changes per hour = 0.88906516 air change per 24 hrs.

Total heat removed = 1.646428571 BTU/ft3

Air change load = 324768.9061 BTU/day

3. Miscellaneous loads
a. Lights
 Since it is not specified, we will use the typical value ranging from 1 to 1.5
watt/ft2

1.25 W/ft2 = 4500 J/hr-ft x 24 hrs/day x (59.7142ft x 87.11055ft) = 561787574 J/day

Heat Load due to Lights = 532471.88146952 BTU/day

b. Motors
 Since motor or loading conditions are unknown, use 1hp per 16000 ft3 box
 Assume that the dimensions of pallet box are standard (1m x 1m x 1.2m)

Using Table 11 (page 18)

Load in ref. space = 3700 BTU/hp-hr

 Number of persons = 2
 Inside temperature = -20 ⁰C = -4 ⁰F

Using Table 12 – Heat Equivalent of occupancy (page 18)

By interpolation:

Heat equivalent /person = 32160 BTU/day per person

Total Occupancy Load = 2 persons x 32160 BTU/day per person

Total Occupancy Load = 64320 BTU/day

Total Miscellaneous loads = light loads + motor loads + occupancy load

Total Miscellaneous loads = 532471.88146952 BTU/day + 235.2301147 BTU/day + 64320

Total Miscellaneous loads = 597027.1116 BTU/day

4. Product Load
Using Table 7, page 16
 Assume livers, frozen (for the -20⁰C specified room temperature)

Cp below freezing = 0.41 BTU/lb ⁰F

Total heat load = 1128785.869 BTU/day


Total heat load = 13.78320708 kW

With 10% safety factor,

Total heat load = 15.16152779 kW

 For rooms 13, 16, 19, 22


Total heat load = (109276.0692 + 324768.9061 + 597027.1116 + 192831.2) BTU/day

Total heat load = 1223903.287 BTU/day

Total heat load = 14.94465241 kW

With 10% safety factor,

Total heat load = 16.43911765 kW

For selection of compressor:

- Refrigerant: R717 (Ammonia)

- Capacity:
4.9494 kW (For rooms 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, 21)

5.3664 kW (For rooms 13, 16, 19, 22)

- Evaporating Temperature:

From Recommended Temperature difference (page 21)

For meat product, Class 2, TD ranges from 10⁰F to 12⁰F

As stated in the same page, it is considered a good practice o use a max TD of 10


⁰F

Therefore, use TD = 10⁰F = -12.22⁰C

With room temp of -20⁰C, we will use evaporating temperature of -32.22⁰C

- Condensing Temperature: +35⁰C

- Application/Duty: compressing refrigerant for cold storage

- Power Supply: 440V/3P/60Hz


For selection of evaporator:

- Refrigerant: R717 (Ammonia)

- Capacity: 15.16 kW (For rooms 11, 12, 14, 15, 17, 18, 20, 21)

16.44 kW (For rooms 13, 16, 19, 22)

- Evaporating Temperature: -32.22⁰C

- Room Temperature: -20°C (given)

- Throw: Single, 25 meters

- Application: Cold Storage

- Power Supply: 440V/3P/60Hz

For selection of condenser:

- Refrigerant: R717 (Ammonia)

- Capacity: 2x 1075 kW

- Condensing Temperature: +35 °C

- Wet Bulb Temperature: +28 °C

- Type: Induced Draft

- Power Supply: 440V/3P/60Hz
