29 The diagram below shows bread dough undergoing process F, where yeast inside the dough
takes in sugar in the dough mixture to release energy and produce carbon dioxide. Yeast cannot
survive in high temperatures.
(a) The dough and the holes inside increase in size over time until 1 hour after kneading.
Explain the increase in size of the dough and the holes inside clearly. [1]

(b) Why was there no significant further increase in the size of the dough after 1 hour? [2]

It was observed that the size of the dough and the “holes” inside continued increasing.
(c) Could this have been due to an increase in the rate of process F? Explain your answer. [2]

so? [1]

32 Keon set up an experiment as shown in the diagram below, using similar apparatus and plants P
and Q of the same type but having different numbers of leaves.
Set-up A Set-up B
He placed both set-ups in a classroom. After one day, he observed that the water levels in both
set-ups had decreased, while the water level in set-up A decreased more than the water level in
set-up B.

34 The diagram shows a model of a cell that Ryan built. The bag-like structure represents the cell
membrane.
(a) Material X allows only simple substances to pass through it, but not substances like starch.
Ryan observed that at the beginning of the experiment, the water outside the bag-like structure
was clean and did not contain any other substances.
Predict what will happen to the starch in the bag-like structure after a few hours. [1]

plant Insect M → bird
Adult female insects M are always filled with fertilised eggs, which are indigestible.
(b) Using the information above, describe what would happen to the insect and the eggs in the
bird's digestive system starting from the small intestine. The digestive system in the bird is
similar in function to the human digestive system. [2]

35 Keng Siong prepared a set-up as shown below to find out if the number of coils of wire around a
silver rod will affect the pulling force exerted on the iron bar.
He then varied the number of coils of wire and recorded the readings on the spring balance. The
results were as shown below.

of wire around the silver rod. [1]

36 Study the diagram below. When Jason placed object X near the magnet, the rubber ball was
pushed off the table.
(a) (i) Name two forces that caused the rubber ball to fall from the table to the ground. [1]

(ii) Identify a property of the rubber ball that prevents it from breaking when it falls to the
ground. [1]

(b) Identify object X and explain how it was able to push the ball off the table. [2]

(c) The rubber ball bounced off the ground when it reached the bottom and bounced off several
more times before coming to a stop. Jason noticed that the maximum height that the bouncing
rubber ball reached decreased after every bounce. Explain why this was so. [1]

38 Jonathan prepared two set-ups as shown below to find out if exposed surface area of an object
affects the rate of heat transfer.
He filled two similar beakers M and N with 300 ml of water each at 1°C, then surrounded beaker
N with six other similar beakers.
Beaker N and the six beakers surrounding it contained the same amount of water at 1°C, and
the total volume of water in beaker N and the six surrounding beakers was 300 ml. He took both
set-ups out of the refrigerator and into a room at the same time.
Jonathan measured the temperature of the water every minute for the first 20 minutes and every
2 minutes for the next 10 minutes, and recorded the results as shown below.

(a)(i) Why did Jonathan measure the temperature of the water every minute for the first 20
minutes? [1]

(ii) Based on the data recorded in the graph above, what can Jonathan conclude from the
experiment? [1]

(b)(i) Based on the above experiment, explain how this behaviour helps the animals to stay
warm in low temperatures. [1]

(ii) Name a structural adaptation of the lemurs which helps them to stay warm, and explain
how this adaptation helps in keeping the lemurs warm. [1]

40 (a) The diagram below shows a device in a shop, which has only one door for exiting and
entering.
This device counts the number of customers entering and exiting the shop. Every time a
customer enters the shop, a low light reading is recorded and when there are no customers
entering the shop, a large amount of light is detected and recorded.
Throughout a particular day, 2000 low light readings are recorded. All the customers only
entered and exited the shop once.
On that day, how many people entered the shop? Explain your answer. [2]
