poem#1: “She’s in the Sun” by Christy Ann Martine

She’s in the sun,

the wind, the rain,
She’s in the air you
breathe with every
breath you take.
She sings a song
Of hope and cheer,
There’s no more pain
no more fear.
You’ll see her in the clouds above,
hear her whisper
Words of love.
You’ll be together
before long, until then
listen for her song.

Devices:
Christy Ann Martine has showed that when losing a person no matter what they are still
with you and the aftermath of the sorrow and pain. By using literary devices such as
imagery, “You’ll see her in the clouds above” meaning that no matter what the loved one
you lost is always looking down and watching you. Martine has used many devices to
express the true meaning of how big these people are in your life, “She’s in the sun” this
metaphor is an example of how big and meaningful these people are when you lose
them.

Poem#2: “When great trees fall” by Maya Angelou

When great trees fall,

rocks on distant hills shudder,
lions hunker down
in tall grasses,
and even elephants
lumber after safety.
When great trees fall
in forests,
small things recoil into silence,
their senses
eroded beyond fear.

When great souls die,

the air around us becomes
light, rare, sterile.
We breathe, briefly.
Our eyes, briefly,
see with
a hurtful clarity.
Our memory, suddenly sharpened,
examines,
gnaws on kind words
unsaid,
promised walks
never taken.

Great souls die and

our reality, bound to
them, takes leave of us.
Our souls,
dependent upon their
nurture,
now shrink, wizened.
Our minds, formed
and informed by their
radiance,
fall away.
We are not so much maddened
as reduced to the unutterable ignorance
of dark, cold
caves.

And when great souls die,

after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed.

Devices:
Maya Angelou uses literary devices in this poem to the pain and suffering that is felt
when it comes to losing a person. By repeating “When great trees fall” and “When great
souls die” this is the main message of the poet. They are trying to get to the reader the
meaning of what this poem is about and who it’s about. As well as saying “gnaw on kind
words” using this metaphor as in when someone does pass all that you can hold on to
and have to listen to is the kind words and remorse that others feel for your loss.
Angelou uses imagery to show the reader the stages of grief, “ dark, and cold cave” to
“Spaces fill with a kind of soothing electric vibration” by doing this the poet is showing
how when losing someone you go from this dark space which you can imagine being in
to this sense of calmness and feeling like things will get better eventually.

Poem#3: “Loved ones” by Laura L. Lewis

Loved ones are precious
I know this for a fact
And when you lose one
It's like an attack

I've lost some loved ones

To many different things
I hate losing loved ones
But it's a bell that has to ring

Loved ones are special

I have many I should know
But it just seems
I couldn't let them go
You try so hard
To hold on
But in one small second
Loved ones are gone

Sometimes at night
I pray for lost loved ones
Even though they won't come back
This poem is for them the loved ones

Devices:
Throughout this poem Laura L. Lewis shows the character the meaning of what a loved
one is and by doing so she uses many literary devices. In this poem she continues to
use a rhythmic devices by using the ABAB pattern such as “things” and “rings”. Lewis
also used a simile in the poem “it's like an attack”, she uses this to describe the feeling
of when someone you love and care for goes because the pain is a lot more than just a
feeling.

Analysis: The overall theme between all three of these poems is loss of a loved one
and loss in general. Andrei Chikatilo took away from a lot of families and hurt many of
the victims families. These poems show and express the emotion that they had felt, the
first poem shows how a person can finally be okay and at peace with losing their loved
one. Where as the second poem talks about the grief stage and right when a person
loses someone, the sorrow these families had felt when there kids were not returning
home or when families were left without a mother. As for the third poem it shows the
meaning of loved ones and how to not take advantage of the people that you have in
your life. All of these poems go through the stages of griefs and loss and when Andrei
Chikatilo took away from his victims they all had to go through and face all the stages of
griefs.
