WHERE IT BEGAN.
On October 4th, 1957, the first official satelite was launched by the Soviet Union. It’s name was
Sputnik.
The Americans found out about this and in 1960, the Space Race started between The USA and
the Soviet Union. Huge leaps in technology were made in this time, all formed due to
competition between the two countries.
Within four years, the first man was sucessfully launched into space. A Russian man named
Lieutenant Yuri Gagrin.
THE FIRST MEN ON THE MOON
• In 1969, Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong became the first men to walk on the moon, coining the phrase
“One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
• Before the moon landing, several mapping missions had been completed and pictures had been taken.
• Soon after the moon landing, pictures of Mars and Venus were captured for the very first time.
WOMEN IN SPACE
• In 1962, a Russian woman named Valentina Nikaloveya became the first woman in space.
• Since then, women have become shuttle captains and even lead missions around space. It’s amaxing to
see how far society has come!
SPACE TRAVEL NOW
• Modern missions have included mapping missions to saturn and Jupiter, along with planning trips to
Mars for the very first time.
• Space travel is truly exciting and I cant wait to see how far it comes in the future.
