POSITION STATEMENT
TEACHER-LIBRARIAN

This Position Statement documents ways in which a Teacher-Librarian may enact their role and is to be
read in conjunction with the document entitled Role Description – Teacher which is the overarching
Role Description for all Teachers within Catholic Education Archdiocese of Brisbane

1 POSITION TITLE
Teacher-Librarian

2 PURPOSE OF POSITION
The Teacher-Librarian supports and implements the vision of the school
community through building effective library, information and digital
literacy services and programs that contribute to the development of
lifelong learning. The Teacher-Librarian partners and collaborates with
teachers in the development of curriculum and pedagogy and manages
the library and information resources and services of the school. The
Teacher-Librarian contributes to the growth of students as independent,
interdependent lifelong learners.

3 KEY RESULT AREAS


In partnership with colleagues and through the support of the Archdiocese
of Brisbane the Teacher-Librarian in a Catholic school is required to:

♦  evelop, manage and lead a contemporary digital and information

rich environment with a range of resources and services that support
and are responsive to the needs of the school community
Professional Learning
♦  aintain currency of professional knowledge and skills to actively

participate in and contribute to school renewal processes and growth
of professional communities.

4 STATEMENT OF RESPONSIBILITY
The library resource centre and the services it provides are integral to the
school community and to the experience of learning for students and
teachers.
The Teacher-Librarian is committed to:
• t he growth of students as independent, interdependent lifelong
learners
• t he integration of digital and information literacy skills and processes
into curriculum programs
• t he development of resource collections, both print and digital,
information and digital systems and services which promote equity of
access to information
• resourcing a contemporary curriculum and pedagogy
• f ostering the spirit of inquiry in an environment supportive of a diversity
of learners and learning styles, and
• t he promotion and encouragement of an appreciation of literature
and reading.

5 SCOPE OF THE POSITION


T he role of the Teacher-Librarian is fulfilled in both part-time and full-time
capacities in Brisbane Catholic Education schools.

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE

Collaboratively develop, implement and evaluate curriculum with
teachers and school leaders within a contemporary learning environment
to challenge learners to engage effectively with literature and develop
digital and information literacy
Examples may include:

PROFESSIONAL ENGAGEMENT
Develop, manage and lead a contemporary, digital and information rich
environment with a range of resources and services that support and are
responsive to the needs of the school community

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING

Maintain currency of professional knowledge and skills to actively
participate in and contribute to school renewal processes and the growth
of professional communities

6 AUTHORITY LIMITS
Full authority is delegated from the Principal to produce the desired
outcomes.

7 REPORTING AND OTHER RELATIONSHIPS


The Teacher-Librarian is responsible to, and reports on all aspects of the
role to the principal. Relationships of significance exist with other teaching
professionals, specialist staff, school officers and volunteers.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
TEACHER-LIBRARIAN

Applicants applying for the position of Teacher-Librarian in a Brisbane


Catholic Education school must meet the following eligibility criteria:

•  illingness and commitment to support the mission and

ethos of Catholic education

•  old current registration with the Queensland College of


h
Teachers

•  e eligible to work in Australia for the duration of the


b
appointment

•  old recognised tertiary qualifications in librarianship


h
as recognised by Brisbane Catholic Education e.g. as
accredited by the Australian Library and Information
Association (ALIA)

• experience as a Teacher.

Desirable Criteria:
• Teaching experience of at least 5 years.

DUTY STATEMENT
Duty Statements are optional but can be used by the Principal and roleholder
to allow differential levels of role enactment to suit the particular school/
college context.
