Further for load combinations involving wind or earthquake, the allowable soil bearing
pressure maybe increased by one-third.

DEFLECTION CRITERIA
Lateral Deflection (Wind)

Overall Deflection < Height/500

Storey Deflection < Storey height/500

Vertical Deflection of Beams and Slabs due to Gravity Loads

Total Deflection (D + L) < Span/240 up to 25mm maximum

Live Load Deflection < Span/360
Incremental Deflection after < Span/500 or 20mm, whichever is lesser
application of finishes

STORY DRIFT LIMITATIONS

Wind Load
Maximum drift index limit was set at 0.002. The design wind loads was calculated using the
guidelines of NSCP C101-01. Calculated drift shall include translational, torsional deflections and PΔ
effects.

Seismic Load
Calculated story drift using Δm shall not exceed 0.025 times the story height for structures having
fundamental period of less than 0.7 second. For structures having a fundamental period of 0.7
second or greater, the calculated story drift shall not exceed 0.020 times the story height.

The maximum inelastic response displacement, Δm shall be computed as follows:

Δm = 0.7 * R * Δs

Where Δs is the resulting deformations from a static, elastic analysis of the lateral force-resisting
system prepared using the design seismic forces. Alternatively, dynamic analysis may be performed
in accordance with UBC97 Section 1631. The mathematical model shall comply with UBC97 Section
1630.1.2. Calculated drift shall include translational and torsional deflections.

The design lateral forces used to determine the calculated drift may disregard the limitations of
UBC97 Equations (30-6) and may be based on the period determined from UBC97 Equation (30-10)
neglecting the 30 or 40 percent limitations of UBC97 Section 1630.2.2, Item 2.

The analysis used to determine the Maximum Inelastic Response Displacement Δm shall consider PΔ
effects.

TORSION AND P-DELTA EFFECT

Torsion is typically classified as actual or accidental. Actual torsion arises from an

eccentricity between the centers of mass and stiffness. Accidental torsion is intended to
cover a variety of factors, including the rotational component of ground motion, strengths,
and dead-load masses of structural and non-structural components and unfavorable
distributions of dead – and – live – load masses.

Accidental torsion, due to uncertainties in the mass and stiffness distribution, must be
added to the calculated eccentricity. This is done by adding a torsional moment at each floor
equal to the story shear multiplied by 5% of the floor dimension, perpendicular to the
direction of the force. This procedure is equivalent to moving the center of mass by 5% of
the plan dimension in a direction perpendicular to the force. If the deflection at either end
of the building is more than 20% greater than the average deflection, it is classified as
torsionally irregular and the accidental eccentricity must be amplified using the formula:

Ax = [ δmax / 1.2δavg ]² ≤ 3.0

Where:
δ AVg = the average of the displacements at the extreme
points of the structure at level x.
δmax = the maximum displacements at level x

P-Delta effects must be included in determining member forces and story displacements
where significant.

ORTHOGONAL EFFECT
The Uniform Building Code requires that in Seismic Zone 4, provisions shall be made for the effects
of earthquake forces acting in a direction other than the principal axes in each of the following
circumstances
 The structure has non-parallel lateral force force-resisting systems.
 The structure has torsional irregularity.
 A column of a structure forms part of two or more intersecting lateral force-resisting
systems.

If the axial load in the column due to seismic forces acting in either principal axis is less than 20% of
the column allowable axial load, then the above provision need not apply.

The requirement that orthogonal effects be considered, may be satisfied by designing an element
for 100% of the prescribed seismic forces in one direction, plus 30% of the prescribed forces in the
perpendicular direction. The combination requiring the greater component strength must be used
for design.

Alternatively, the effects of the prescribed seismic forces along two orthogonal directions may be
combined on a square root of the sum of the squares (SRSS) basis.

ANALYSIS
General
The analysis is carried out in accordance with the Uniform Building Code (UBC) 1997 /
National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP) 2001. A three dimensional model will be
used in the analysis using ETABS - Integrated Building Design Software.

Vertical Load Analysis

Vertical load analysis will be carried out on the basis of the loads given in 3.4
Procedure was as follows:

1. Choose a structural framing system considering the material chosen, use or

occupancy and height
2. Layout the vertical load and lateral load resisting framing system
3. Layout the floor framing system
4. Determine floor slab dead and live load
5. Analyze and determine required thickness of floor slab
6. Distribute floor loads to beam using method recommended by ACI or NSCP.
7. Use a three dimensional model for the structural analysis and apply the
corresponding dead and live load.
8. Use Ieffective (Effective Moment of Inertia) of structural members as required by
ACI/UBC e.g. 0.70Igross for columns, 0.35Igross for beams (See ACI318-05 10.11,
UBC97 1910.11)

Lateral Load Analysis

Wind Load Analysis

Wind load analysis shall be carried out on the basis of the design parameters loads given in 3.6.1.
Wind assumed to come from any horizontal direction. No reduction in wind pressure for shielding
effect of adjacent structures.

The base overturning moment for the entire structure, or for any one of its primary lateral-resisting
elements, is check and shall not exceed two thirds of the dead-load-resisting moment. For an entire
structure with a height-to-width ratio of 0.5 or less in the wind direction and a maximum height of
60 feet (18,290 mm), the combination of the effects of uplift and overturning shall be reduced by
one-third as allowed by NSCP / UBC. The weight of earth superimposed over footings was used to
calculate the dead-load-resisting moment.

Procedure is as follows:
a. Determine design wind pressure at each level.
b. Apply wind load to the three dimensional model.

9
JESMA Engineering Consultancy
Earthquake Load Analysis
Earthquake load analysis shall be carried out on the basis of the design parameters given in 3.6.2. An
equivalent static seismic analysis shall be carried out to obtain the scaling factors for the dynamic
lateral forces. The dynamic analysis shall be performed as required and the detailed procedure
illustrated in UBC 1631. The forces from the dynamic analysis multiplied by the scaling factor shall be
used throughout the design.

Below are the effective moments of inertia to be used for the structural members.

Columns: Ieffective = 0.70 * Igross

Beams: Ieffective = 0.35 * Igross
Walls: Uncracked Ieffective = 0.70 * Igross
Cracked Ieffective = 0.35 * Igross
Procedure is as follows:
a. Determine building mass
b. Determine design base shear for static force procedure.
c. Determine minimum accidental torsion.

d. Perform dynamic lateral response spectrum analysis

10
JESMA Engineering Consultancy
Description of Dynamic Analysis Procedure:

a. Perform the dynamic analysis using the normalized response spectra shapes given by UBC 1997
using an initial acceleration of one (1) g.

b. Determine number of modes shapes required to attain a mass participation of at least 90%. UBC
requires that at least 90 percent of the participating mass of the structure should be included in the
calculation of response for each principal horizontal direction.

c. Check base shear from dynamic analysis using an acceleration of one (1) g. Scale the results.

d. Rerun dynamic analysis using the scaled acceleration from Step c.

e. Apply minimum accidental torsion requirements.

f. Perform design for structural members.

g. Determine the fundamental period (TB) using the structural properties and deformational
characteristics of the resisting elements (Method B)

h. Check approximate T of Method A (TA) versus Method B (TB). If TB is smaller than TA, use TB and
recalculate the minimum required base shear in Step b and redo the analysis. If TB is larger than TA,
we can use TB in formula in procedure b and reduce the minimum required base shear. The value of
TB shall not exceed a value 30 percent greater than the value of Ta in Seismic Zone 4.

i. Check the story drift.
