Discussion
A chemical reaction is a process that is generally characterized by chemical change in which the
starting materials (reactants) are different from the products. Chemical reactions tend to involve the
movement of electrons, the moving of electron will lead to the formation and breaking of chemical
bonds. There are several types of chemical reactions:

Redox reaction, in this type of reaction, the oxidation numbers of atoms are change. Redox reactions
may involve the transfer of electrons. An example of this is:2S2O3^(2-) (aq) + I2 (aq) -> S4O6^(2-) (aq)
+ 2 I^(-) (aq)

Chemical decomposition is when a compound is broken into smaller chemical species Ab -> A + B.
Test 4 is an example of chemical decomposition

Single displacement reaction is characterized by one element being displaced from a compound by
another element: A + BC -> AC + B an example of this is a reaction between zinc and hydrochloric
acid. The Zinc will displace the hydrogen Zn + 2 HCl -> ZnCl2 + H2
Double displacement reaction occurs when there are two compounds exchanges bonds or ions to
form different compounds. AB + CD -> AD + CB. An example of this reaction will be test 1

Combustion reaction is a type of redox reaction in which a combustible material combines with an
oxidizer to form oxidized products and generate heat. Usually, in a combustion reaction oxygen
combines with another compound to form carbon dioxide and water an example will be test 7

Combination reaction also known as synthesis reaction happens when there are two or more
chemical species combine to form a more complex product A + B -> AB. An example is the
combination of iron and sulfide to form Iron (II) sulphide: 8 Fe + S8 -> 8 FeS

Neutralisation is a chemical reaction in which acid and base react and produce salt and water. In
other words neutralization is the combination of hydrogen ions and hydroxide ions to form water
molecules. In the process salt is also formed. Acid + Base -> Salt + Water. Test 15 is an example of
neutralization.

Conclusion
This lab experiment was to observe chemical changes, to write balanced equations, and to identify
different types of reactions. Within the following lab. All the reactions were classified as chemical
reactions, because of colour changes, precipitate forming, combustion, or and exo/endo-thermic
reaction. A balance equation was then written to determine the amount of matter within the
product in comparison to the reactants that reacted at the start and the types of reactions they
resulted in such as single displacement, Combination, decomposition and double displacement.
Through this lab experiment I have obtained and identified the different type of chemical reaction
and the balance equation, thus the purpose of this lab is achieved.
