Integrating HOTS Strategies in Students’

Oral Presentation

Education is fundamental for us to take a stab at monetary advancement. We educate ourselves on

account we had always wanted throughout everyday life. Many professions like pilots, nurses, and more

are conceivable because of teachers. Teachers transmit information to students. They are in charge of the

educating learning process. Numerous teachers recognize the significance of basic reasoning or high order

thinking skills in the instructive educational program.

In fact, according to Watson (2019), higher-order thinking skills is mostly used in American

curriculum. She also defined higher-order thinking skills as a method that is classifying critical thinking

skills from low-order learning results. It also incorporates synthesizing, analyzing, reasoning,

comprehending, application, and evaluation.

It is difficult to imagine an educator or school pioneer who doesn't know about the significance of

higher-order thinking skills to get ready young fellows to live in the 21st Century. In any case, the degree

to which higher-order thinking skills are instructed and evaluated keeps on being a territory of discussion,

with numerous educators and businesses communicating worry that youngsters 'can't think'. (Collins,

2014).

The researchers decided to conduct this study because there are a lot of students in Rafael L.

Lazatin Memorial High School that is having a hard time learning in school. We want to prove in this

research that students will develop new learning strategies to improve their academic performances with

the help of high-order thinking skill strategies.

Thinking skills is one of the pointers of value enhancement of learning. In late time, school

learning is required to prepare student higher-order thinking skills. Enhancing more elevated amount of

reasoning abilities is a need in science learning. One approach to enhance the higher-order skills of
students is the configuration venture based learning. The address need to structure the utilization of task

based learning with assessment exercises attempted by students (M Lukitasari et. al., 2018). Higher Order

Thinking Skills needs to be integrated with students’ learning competencies. Instructors need to take risk

by using this kind of instruction.

In any case, HOTS strategies are not an unchangeable reality. Students can push ahead or back

and even skip ventures in these strategies. In the event that students utilize higher-order thinking skills

and basic critical thinking routinely, thinking will turn into a habit (Spivey, 2017). Students who will

maintain this kind of ability to integrate HOTS in learning competency will develop a routine of keeping

everything in order and maintain a good performance in school.

HOTS depends on different taxonomies of learning, especially the one made by Benjamin Bloom

in his 1956 book, "Taxonomy of Educational Objectives: The Classification of Educational Goals."

Higher-order thinking skills are reflected by the best three dimensions in Bloom's Taxonomy: analysis,

synthesis, and evaluation (Watsons, 2019).

In a learning procedure, it is normal that a student can build his subjective, full of feeling, and

skill capabilities to set himself up to most likely run his future life in the general public. In any case, the

nature of learning result does not meet yet the capability required (Suprapto et. al., 2017). Each students

has their own ways of coping with learning competencies. These traits of students contribute to increasing

the development of HOTS.

New patterns in educating and learning try to improve students focused guidance; in which

students take obligations of their learning in situations that empower support, basic reasoning, critical

thinking, assortment of exercises, bunch work and significant communications rather than repetition

remembrance which results in uninvolved understudies who are unequipped for development and

advancement (Hamad, 2016). Formulating new teaching instructions for students learning competency
and not just focusing on basic repetitive activity and memorization. Students will be able to build new

foundation of critical thinking and higher order skills of sorting and dealing with tasks.

For the most part, basic reasoning techniques are definitely not broadly created or practiced on

amid primary and secondary education. All things considered, early development of this technique is

basic for authority preceding university registration. Week after week commitment in 50 min of

classroom discussion with understudy input was used to build up the basic reasoning techniques in an

initial assessment of students' critical thinking (Hayes and Devitt, 2008). Reasoning skills, critical

thinking and other types of learning competencies are not taught in primary and secondary education.

Thus the researchers intended to conduct this study to apply HOTS not just in secondary education but

also in primary educations.

Higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) ought to be a vital piece of instructing and adapting

particularly at the advanced education level. Thinking skills exercises ought to be a piece of the

educational programs if students are to take care of issues separately, helpfully and innovatively. Teachers

then again should be acquainted with significant systems required for instructing higher order thinking

skills (Chinedu et. al., 2015). As stated by Chinedu HOTS is one of the learning competencies that a

student should acquire to have. It is a must in students’ skills and ability to integrate and analyze a

situation or a problem more accurately.

A standout amongst the most normal issues is actualizing higher order thinking skills addresses

when instructing composing. Instructors have issues in finding the ideal time to actualize higher order

thinking skills inquiries in teaching writing. Instructing to write in a second dialect is an unpredictable

procedure that requires significant investment, exertion and practice. Far more detestable, writing is

typically educated in seclusion from other dialect abilities. students need to experience a complex and

routine procedures of writing and this has made composing a dreary and exhausting subject particularly

for frail students (Singh et al, 2018). Developing a routine for students to improve and enhance their
ability to have Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) integrated within their knowledge of basic

education taught in school.

Higher-order thinking skills has depicted monstrous industry request and the significant objective

of instructive establishments in granting instruction is to in still higher order thinking skills. This

assembles and orders the foundations and educators to build up the higher order thinking skills so as to set

up their students for compelling execution and meet the businesses' desires (Shukla et al, 2019). Basic

education systems should be integrated with HOTS. This system of instructing students is necessary for

both teachers and students for they will have the ability to attain the standards of the outside world.

Higher-order thinking skills is important since thinking is the initial step of learning. As the

student think at higher order they run over to different questions and it will give them a presentation to

adapt new things with interest. Instructing English as a second language requires thinking in English

which can make learning easy (Undale, 2016).

Statement of the Problem

The main purpose of this research is to determine and identify on what teaching strategies is

much affective to be employed using higher-order thinking skills.

It specifically sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are the different teaching strategies utilized by educators and which of these are effective

for students’ academic performance?

2. What is the level of effectiveness in terms of using HOTS strategies?

3. What is the number of students who improves their academic performances trough HOTS

strategies?

4. What approaches are commonly used by students in making oral presentation?

5. What other factors may affect students’ performance in terms of oral presentation?
Ho:

There is no significant difference between Higher-Order Thinking Skills strategies and Students’

Oral Presentation.

Significance of the Study

It is very important to develop students not just in the lessons they learned from the four corners

of their classrooms but also to think critically which they can use in future purposes. The result of this

research will rebound to the benefit of junior high school students, teachers, administrators, future

researchers, and parents.

Junior high school students. The findings of this study will inform junior high school students

about the different strategies and skills in learning which they can use in their oral presentations.

Teachers. The findings of this study may benefit teachers on what kind of strategies to use in

teaching and they will also be more aware of those students who are in need of attention and needs more

improvement.

Administrators. The findings of this study may give them a basis in tapping teachers to use

higher-order thinking skills strategies in teaching.

Future Researchers. The findings of this study may benefit future researchers as it provides

related materials and information in doing their research.

Parents. The findings of this study will help their sons and daughters to improve their academic

performance that will be very pleasant for them. It may boost the parents’ will and improve their support

to their children.
