Introduction
Perhaps the pinnacle or the climax of the education
course is the Practice Teaching. It is in this chapter in the
life of every Education Student where he is sent to be given
a foretaste of the teaching profession, of the world of work.
It is also the chapter in the life of an education student
where he/she finally realizes if he or she is really meant for
teaching. That is why it is needed that the student teacher
should give his best shot in order to have the best
experiences in teaching.
This portfolio narrates the struggles as well as
contains the realizations a student teacher thought in his
brief stay in the Alicia National High School. Like many of
those who decided to discern the call to be lightbearer for
others, he also experienced struggles that has made him
strong. And here he is, narrating his rich experiences
through this portfolio.

Philosophy

Teaching is a VOCATION.
Once heeded, should be executed with a sense of
responsibility and care for the future generation’s
sake.
And having a sense of responsibility should be seen
on how a teacher strives to teach in order not any one
to be lagged behind, which intertwines care for the
future generation’s sake.
A true teacher is not only efficient nor effective
only.

Reflection
We are bound and shaped by the principles that
we live in our lives. It may be, is just a set of
words but have a deep meaning that shapes us.
For me, like the priesthood, teaching is also a
noble and holy vocation. It is noble as unlike any
other courses and fields of work, it touches more
lives and shapes the future in general. It is also
my fervent conviction that a true teacher should
not only be efficient, but also effective. Those 2
characteristics should be intertwined for learning
is compromised when the one of those is missing.

Reflection
It has been customary as well as obligatory
for a teacher applying for a job to secure herself
a resume. A resume is a piece or two or paper
that serves as your outer skin when you are
applying for a job, considering the fact that it
contains vital information about you as well as
your professional growth and they tend to look at
the competencies and skills they need and want
for a prospective teacher-employee. The more you
fill in the corresponding fields the more they see
you to be suitable for the job. As future teachers
and educators, it should be expected and seen
that the fields in our resume are many, or if
necessary full. However, we should still keep in
mind that as the fields in our resume is increasing
the more we should act professionally and refined.
That would ensure the credibility not just of the
resume, but also of us, future teachers.

Description of the Site
The Alicia National High School was formerly
known as Rizal Region National High School Annex, the
mother school of which is located on barangay Rizal,
which was far from the National Highway. However,
due to the rapid influx of enrollees from the different
parts of Alicia, on March of 1998, it was separated
from its mother school Rizal Region HS and was
renamed Alicia National High School.

Reflection
The School serves as the second home for the students. In this
manner, the school administration, the parents and stakeholders
team up together through various projects and activities launched
in order to make this maxim real. A learner is motivaed more to learn
in an environment conducive to learn. Conduciveness comes in many
forms; having a classroom that is well-equipped with facilities and
materials needed to cater the learning needs of every learner, free
from stress and id well attended, a child-frendly environment where
the child is free from anything that could hinder them from learning
and developing, free from violence yet is a haven of mutual respect,
and as well as letting the learner learn in the way he adpts the
most. As a future educator, I learned during my Professional
Education classes how to facilitate learning conducively, thus, that it
should follow that the outcome f this is giving the learner the best
learning experience he will have.
My brief stay at the Alicia National High School opened me to
these hindsights; first that the school has a great impact on the
learning of a child. The school should make the learners feel like
welcoming hem with a warm embrace, not to give them a
nightmare-like experience they might bear until they become fully
grown-up. Second, that we teachers should be the first one to make
them feel they belong here; therefore discrmination and favoritism
as well as punitive or offensive remarks should be avoided. Third and
last, that the teacher and the child should not be the only ones
acting and helping each other. That is why we have this so-called
“Stakeholders Initiative”. Having these in our minds and walking
the talk at the same time, we can make them feel home and
belonged.

Reflection
As a future teacher, we are molders of the children’s future.
It is in our hand where lies the future. That is why we
should exert our very earnest effort in order to provide ALL
learners with the best learning experience that could equip
them in their future lives. However, in spite of that, we
cannot avoid having learners that could not adapt and are
prone to be lagged behind. And as future teachers, it should
be our primary responsibility to cater to them the best that
we can in order for them to learn.
In the adopt a learner program, I chose the oldest yet the
most hard-headed and one of the bahind in their class;
Jefferson A. Isidro, 16 years old from Grade 8 - Bonifacio. I
encounter in every session that he often shun reading the
selection in the Powerpoint slide and was rowdy; often has
his earphones while I am discussing and yet would attain low
scores in my 5-item quizzes. Encouraged by the hope that
there would be an impact in him, I enrolled him in our Adopt-
a-learner program.
It is my firm conviction that learning is for everyone, and we
should help them in attaining learning in the best that we
can. We should not let anyone be lagged behind. For it is also
in our part as future educators, a big slap on the face.

Reflection
We also learn through the observation of others. As
sometimes, what they see on and about us is truly the
reflection of our own acts. And from their generous
observations we should also learn not to be offended but to
change ourselves for the better. During my first stint in
practice teaching in the Alicia National High School, I went
under time and so I was only given a low grade in my
evaluation form and there are a lot of Not observed in my
Observation sheet as well. In such cases like that, one
should learn to set aside his/her own feelings and change for
the better or improve oneself. Acting professionally has
always been the key towards attaining success. Nevermind if
you were hurt or offended. No offenses; business is business.
We can learn by following and listening to the feedbacks of
others. Still, there is enough room for us to improve
ourselves.

Reflection
The lesson plan is an effective and powerful medium we, future teachers need in order to create a
good instruction. It is connected to us as blueprint in order to build strong edifices of learning. Just
as how tax is the lifeblood of the country. Observing at some teachers, I saw that they only care
on the delivery and on how the lesson would be finished, regardless of whether the learners achieved
the objectives or has failed to transmit learning. Hence, it is a must-see that in the planning of the
lesson, the first thing we should keep in mind is to not compromise the learners’ needs in order to
understand the lesson well. Well, we can do that by pointing achievable yet relevant competencies
that the learner could and should attain. In doing so, we as future teachers should be creative
enough to think of various activities we can showcase to our learners. First things first, in the
first parts of the lesson. A teacher should strive to achieve a good rapport between the teacher
and the learner in order for the objectives of the lesson to be successfully met. This is one thing I
realized during my brief Practice teaching stint. Therefore we should be creative and innovative, as
what the University aspires us to be. At first, it was very pressuring to make a lesson plan in
detailed form to be delivered on the next sessions, unsure of whether the objectives are achievable
or not.

I remembered having an under-time in delivering the lesson of the day. From that, I once again
realized that I should not stick fully on the lesson plan, though it is considered the blueprint of the
lesson. And from there enters the use of sharing tidbits of information through adlibs and further
elaboration. That is why I tend to elaborate more on the matter being discussed and adding other
information regarding that, and I usually ensure that they internalize the important terms in the
topic being discussed by repeating the questions regarding it and asking anaytic questions regarding
it until they finally understand it. Learning should not be compromised, that is why I tend to
entertain queries regarding the lesson topic.

One element that should be seen in a lesson plan is creativity. Indeed a teacher should be creative
in plotting his/her lesson plan. One should make sure that the activities and plot in lesson that a
teacher abides on to is not cliché. In my observation, some teachers use the same method and mode
o activities in their classes over and over again. And minding of that is the fact that the teacher
should also think of ways he or she could cater the varied needs of the learners considering their
individual differences. one can employ a song, dance, or give varied activities like extemporaneous
speech, role playing and slogan or poster.

There are two types of teachers; the efficient and the effective. One teacher is said to be
efficient if content-wise he delivers the lesson well. However, it disregards the law of readiness and
thus makes learners behind. The other one, effective refers to a teacher who effectively employs
strategies and meets objectives, yet tends to lag behind as it over-caters to the students needs.

It is my personal conviction that learning should be student-centered yet responsive to their


learning needs in order for them to be provided with great and meaningful learning experiences,
which is our primary aim. That is why in my lesson plan, I always make sure that no learner is
compromised. And that experience of mine sharpened my then-dull experience to deliver and teach
them meaningfully and smoothly. We should be both effective and efficient at the same time.

- Marvin Perry provided a concise explanation of the World History which is
understandable by readers. The interaction between the book and the reader
is seen to be smooth as the explanation of the terms and the summarization
is concise and easy to pick. Whereby it is proven to be an effective textbook
in the academe.

Reflection
Reading has been an effective tool not just in learning
new things, but especially for us, future teachers; an
outlet for professional growth. Indeed as we read, we
accumulate useful information that we can utilize in
the workplace that is why it is very much encouraged
for the professionals to never stop reading. Read a lot!
Reading provides food to make our brain healthy with
knowledge. It provides us proofs in times of doubt,
that by reading we can be spared from wrong beliefs
and fake information and news. Reading therefore
gives a lot of help and support for us.
Reading also serves as our bullet reserves in times
when we do not know what we do and say in teaching,
that by brainstorming, we recall the past information
we read and integrate it in the classroom instruction.
Even though neglected by many, still, reading
contributes hugely to the intellectual growth of man,
and that its need stresses more in the world of
professionals. It makes a professional more mature in
mind and thinking.

Reflection
“Paghandaan ang iyong kinabukasan”, says the
commercial of a famous life plan company. Indeed, we
should prepare ourselves a to-do list or most likely, a
blueprint of our plans as we start to enter the wider
world. And this blueprint would serve as not only a
motivational visual but also a challenge which dares us
to accomplish what is in there, and strive for more if
those were attained. We live in a world full of
uncertainties, we need to have a plan in order for us to
go smoothly. And what if we did not met the goals set
in the plan? Then have a contingency plan, and do it
again until we finally attain our goals.

Reflection
Punctuality is a one good sign of good work relations.
And for us, future teachers, we are expected to be
punctual; to be role models of time management and
punctuality in work. I am very much disappointed to
file on my Daily time record the times when I arrive
at school late. Indeed it is not honorable nor did a
compliment to be tag as a late comer especially in the
workplace, instead, it is a shameful response that
might take you and your job/profession at risk and
would lead to a not so good working relationship and a
fog in your career path.
As a future teacher then, I found out the value of
punctuality and its relation to the learning process.
Coming up late in class leads to a rowdy classroom
atmosphere, as the rapport was not achieved and no
rules implemented. Same is true with being an early
bird; there’s a lot of things that can be done plus the
rapport can be easily achieved. No need for cramming.
Work goes smoothly. And I guess that is the thing I
need to improve as I embark on the wider world.

Reflection
A teacher is expected not only to teach, but to render other
services that requires his/her abilities. In which therefore,
as a future teacher, it should be automatic for us to know
how to multi-task. Multi-tasking is, yes, energy draining, yet
awakens you to many realizations and uncovers your hidden
abilities. And this is what I realized when I was privileged
to render some auxillary services for the Alicia National High
School at various instances. The biggest relization for me is
that we should be service-oriented teachers
Indeed, we should take this as a chance to prove
ourselves as a true service-oriented teacher. A service
oriented teacher acts even without no corresponding points
for ranking or money or fame as a return of investment.
Contrary to what many of the teachers are doing in their
schools. At the end of the day, a service rendered
unconditionally and with a sense of initiative leads to true
service.

Reflection
As future teachers, one of our foremost responsibilities is to
monitor the progress and the activity of the learner. We
have a handful of papers or documents used to monitor the
child’s progress, improvement and decline. At many instances,
whenever a learner failed to pass the subject even if this is
the learner’s whole fault, the blame will be and will always be
towards the teacher. Why didn’t you do anything? Why did
you let this child fail? Will be the roasting statements that
will fry us, even if we are blameless. A class record/card with
a vital sign-like or rock bottom-like record gives utter dismay
to the teacher.
True enough, through the records of the school (report card,
class record, attendance etc), we cannot lose track of the
learner’s progress and if they seem to fail, we can still give
remedy to it. however, we should also remind our learners
that the main person who could help them develop
themselves are themselves still. That is why a good
teacher-learner relationship must be secured by the teacher.
This must be done in a give-and-take basis; we do our part
by tutoring and giving remedials, and yet he/she should also
do her part by attending classes/reviewing/ask support and
help from trusted peers.

Reflection
School records, class records, attendance sheets; are pieces of
paper that are vital and useful for us; future educators.
These provides us track of the learners’ progress; a bird’s
eye view of those could help in seeking solution to address
learning problems, and at the same time could serve as
evidence of negligence to a student with a low mark or grade
when his/her parents come towards the teacher to complain.
This could see how much the learner has participated in the
teaching-learning process, as of course, frequent absences

also a source of verification and confirmation that the
child/learner actively does his part. It is also through those
that a teacher could oversee remedies and alternatives that
are needed in order to address the learners’ needs.

Reflection
Grades are just numbers they often say, they do not
measure your full potential. As a very grade conscious
student I often get agitated when I get a grade
below 90. Sometimes perhaps, because I think the
teacher did not computed the grades fairly. And so
every end of the term, I often get hysterical or
paranoid as to how will my grades be after this term.
Well, perhaps not thinking of my personal boon but it is
because considering that we are living in an “Age of
Credentialism”, I might get difficult finding a decent
job, as they are now tending to look after a person
with high numerical marks.
But at the outset, grades are also stimulators for us
to strive more. Not satisfied of the 81 or 75 you
received? Then perform better next time. Strive! It
should serve as a spring board for us to strive harder
and aim father. But make sure, lastly, to make it
happen and when you attained your goal grade, jump to
higher standards and hurdle them to with this as your
stepping stone.

General Reflection
Teaching is considered as the noblest of all the professions. It
encompasses all; there are no lawyers, engineers, doctors, and other
profession without a teacher who patiently taught them catered to
their needs. A teacher is a catalyst of change, which was sent to bring
the children to enlightenment, away from ignorance that could gravely
hinder the promised bright future of tomorrow. We are the bringers of
good change for the betterment of people. Teaching is a vocation which
entails a noble responsibility of molding the youth of today, as the hope
and change-bringers of tomorrow. As teachers, we shape the future.
Practice teaching at Alicia National High School, which spanned almost
two months, has provided me with various realizations and has provided
me with a rich experience that I could utilize in my future career. I
admit that I do, still committed some shortcomings in striving to cater
the learning needs of the students; I became mad at them and scolded,
reprimanded them when they are getting rowdy and rude. That though
has helped me in prolonging my very short patience in things. I realized
during my almost two-month stay, that there are still room for me, for
improvement in matters of Classroom management and in establishing a
good rapport between me and the students. I was glad that I was able
to employ some of the strategies I’ve learned in the Professional
Education courses, but I was challenged by the fact that in spite of all
the principles and strategies taught by our dear professors, the
challenge here is that you need to modify those and try to create a
method of your own especially the ones that could cater the needs of all,
without any one of them lagging behind. But overall, I am very much
grateful to the Alicia national High School for the privilege of knowing
myself and my abilities more, and in touching the young adolescents’ lives
even in a short while. Indeed, the greatest realization I have ever
thought in my short stint in this school, is that teaching should be fused
with love, patience, freedom, and hope.
