Senior House Officer, Kumasi South Hospital
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology
As part of housemanship training I worked in the department for six
months. I participated in the bi-weekly ward rounds and weekly
presentation. I managed various cases such as bleeding per vaginam
of varying causes and infertility. I managed routine antenatal, delivery
and postnatal care for normal pregnancy. I was supervised by the
senior colleagues to manage high risk pregnancies. I observed various
gynecological surgeries such as myomectomy, hysterectomy and
fistula repair. Skills acquired include performing caesarean section,
evacuation of uterus, cerclage and vacuum assisted delivery.

Department of Medicine
I learned how to take a thorough history, perform a detailed
examination, and make relevant differentials, request for appropriate
labs and devise appropriate treatment regimen. I partook in the bi-
weekly ward rounds and presented cases to my colleagues and
supervisors. I frequently attended educational sessions and
workshops. Skills acquired include femoral vein access, passage of
nasogastric tube and tube thoracostomy.

Department of Surgery
I worked in the department for six months. I rotated through Trauma
and Orthopedics unit, Urology unit and General Surgery unit. I
observed and assisted various surgeries including total hip
arthroplasty, amputations, transurethral resection of the prostate,
hernia repair and mastectomy. I observed and managed emergencies
such as acute abdomen, acute retention of urine and fractures. Skill
acquired includes application of plaster of Paris, application of splint,
suprapubic cystotomy , dressing of wounds and incision and drainage
of swellings.
September 2016 – February 2017
Junior House Officer, Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital
Department of Pediatrics
I partook in the bi-weekly general ward rounds sessions and the
presentation every Thursday. I rotated through the Mother Baby Unit
for two months where I learnt management of medical conditions
pertaining to newborns more emphasis on recognizing emergency
conditions and timely interventions. I also rotated through the
pediatric cardiac and respiratory ward for a month where I developed
proficiencies in managing cases. I observed echocardiogram being
performed and passed chest tube for patients. I also rotated through
the pediatric renal, malnutrition ward for a month and completed my
rotation in the Pediatric Emergency Unit for a month. Skills
developed during these rotations include IV cannulation, blood
sample collection, nasogastric tube insertion and urinary catheter
insertion.

I prepared lesson notes plan and taught all the subjects pertaining to
that class. I also prepared teaching aids to help the children learn and
planned field trip to Lake Bosomtwe. I worked with a dyslexic child

continue the education.
