INTRODUCTION
Reading is done in our everyday life. Reading is a fundamental skills that a person
learns in his early life. The ability to read is essential on student's learning. Without
enough reading comprehension skills, students will struggle in many subject areas. It is
the right of every student to learn the basic skill of Education especially reading. It is
important because it is the key to success. Reading skills is a skill that everyone can
use in the future and for life time. Most smart people can read. It can enhance our
intelligence by reading english books, novels and literatures, and we can also get
informations from magazines, encyclopedia, dictionaries and news papers. As a 21st
century student, reading is more of a requirement, thus it is an obligation for us to learn
how to read especially the English language since it’s our second Language. It is also a
tool for communication since the use of technology has risen up on this generation. The
ability to read can give us advantages. In school, if we know how to read we can cope
up with the lessons and have a high academic performance. Reading can be used for
different purposes. We read to learn, to gather informations, to be informed, and to
communicate with each other. If we know how to read, it's easy for us to learn the
other Education skills such as writing. Without reading skills you may find it hard to
apply for jobs in the future because most of the jobs now a days have interviews and
gives forms to every employee to fill up and to answer all the questions on it.
This research is intended for Grade 7 students who is having difficulties in reading
the English language. Difficulties such as pronouncing difficult English words, Words
with deep meanings and Understanding the whole sentence that may cause a big problem
in the future of the child.

Five (5) out of hundred (100) students from sections Raven, Robin, Seagull and
Stork handled by their English teacher Ms. Jennifer Antiporta, section Quail by their
teacher Ms. Nariza Vargas and Skylark by Ms. Leilanie Torres are Non - English Reader.
They lack on the ability to read English sentences. They don’t understand vocabulary
words and even the whole sentence. What do you think is the cause? The reading. skills
is affected by several factors. Based on the research, the main factor that affects their
performance is Lack of Guidance from their parents. Students tend to loose their
interest on reading because they are not guided well. They say 'Home is the first School'.
Children, from their early age should be taught the basic reading from home and improve
it on school but because of the lack of guidance some children is facing difficulties in
reading english. No support coming from their parent is also a factor. Now a days,
instead of reading english books, literatures or novels to enhance their reading skills,
Children only focus on playing mobile games and surfing online. Next is Lack of
Interest in learning the English language. Many may think that English is a hard subject
because of many vocabulary words with difficult meaning, because of some words that is
hard to pronounce but English is just like any other subject. You will easily learn it if
you're interested to it. Their inability to speak in English can affect the students life not
just in school but also in the future. If students lack the ability to read, Students may
not be able to comprehend and write effectively. Also, they will not be able to cope up
academically in school that might result to poor or low performance in the academic.
Most of student with low reading and commucation skills won’t improve that fast
because their self confidence is not yet developed at their early age. They are
embarassed to face their classmate because they are not sure if they are pronouncing it
right. But, they need to do something to improve theirselves to have self confidence so
that their commucation skills will improve too. Non - English and Struggling Readers
may definitely be incompetent in terms of reading and writing skills. If they can't read
English words properly then they can't write English sentences too. It can affect their
future, many jobs right now requires their employees to have the ability to speak, read,
and write in English.
Reading tutorials and Reading Program Buddy. Divide the students by their
performance (in Reading) and Group them by 2’s, So the one who can read in english
can help those who can't.
Help them learn to love English on their early year. Expose them to English learning
materials as soon as possible so they can acquire the basic skills and improve it on
school later on.
Build a close and loving environment to the students. As teachers are named as the
second parents at the classroom, it is better to build closeness with respect. It's better to
always talk to each other. Communicate to the students with the things that they don't
understand and try to help them with it. Once they become comfortable they will ask
for help on their own.

CONCLUSION
The study made by the researchers was to know the causes and effects of the
inability to read of some Grade 7 Students from Cabuyao National High School. The
researchers conclude that:
> Grade 7 teachers have high expectations on their student's reading skills.
> The main factor was Lack of Guidance from their Parents and Teachers.
> Lack of Interest, The School Program itself, and No support from their parents can
also be a factor.
> English teachers have differents ways to help and guide their Non-Reader students.
> Most Non- English Readers have low academic performances and struggles in every
subject areas.
> Most Non- English Readers do not have enough self confidence.
> Students who can read English has the idea of using it in the future.

Do students fully understand what they are reading? Reading skills is a requirement
for success without it you can't step up your life. Stated by their teachers, We caan do
something to help them fully read and understand the English language. He are some
things that we can do
1. Let them enjoy the English subject. Instead of reading comics, they should read
english novels, literatures and reading materials. They should be exposed on English
learning materials to enhance their ability to read and understand fully what the context
means. Let them enjoy so they can learn the English Language wholeheartedly.
2. Guide them in developing their reading skills. With proper guidance from their
parents and teachers, the students will improve. Teachers and Parents should also focus
on the student more, give them support, and build a loving and respective attitude
towards each other. They should help them enhance their skills starting from the basic
skills until they are able to comprehend on their own.
3. Remove the idea that the English Language is hard. Teachers should put in their
students mind that if it's English, it's fun and enjoyable. Everything is beautiful, you just
need to open your eyes and mind to see the beauty in it. Instead of thinking what is
hard and what is not. Think that everything the Teacher's teach in school can be use in
the future.
4. Give them time. In order to learn to read English word s properly, they need time.
Teach it to them step by step starting from the bottom until they are able to read on
their own. Do not pressure them to learn fast because it will only worsen them, they
will think they’re failure if you give them expectations. Give them time to explore many
books and encyclopedias.
Overall, Only low percent of Grade 7 students are non-readers. They are having
difficulties in reading because of some factors. Difficulties such as pronouncing difficult
English words, words with deep meanings and understanding the whole sentence. At their
early year as a High School student they should improve their reading skills to be a
successful individual in the future.
