Thermocouple

What is
Thermocouple?
A thermocouple is a sensing
device manufactured for
measuring temperatures. It
consists of two dissimilar metals,
joined together at both ends,
which produce a small EMF
voltage at a given temperature
.

Thermocouple
 A thermocouple consists of two pieces of dissimilar metals with their ends
joined together (by twisting, soldering or welding).

 When heat is applied to the junction, a voltage, in the range of milli-volts

(mV), is generated. A thermocouple is therefore said to be self-powered.

 Heating the measuring junction of the thermocouple produces a voltage

which is greater than the voltage across the reference junction.

What are the different thermocouple types?

Thermocouples are available in different

combinations of metals.
The four most common thermocouple is type J,
K, T and E.
Each thermocouple has a different
temperature range

Resistive Temperature Devices

What is RTD?
Resistance Temperature
Detectors (RTDs) are
temperature sensors that
contain a resistor that changes
resistance value as its
temperature changes.

They have been used for many

years to measure temperature
in laboratory and industrial
processes, and have
developed a reputation for
accuracy, repeatability, and
stability

02/13/2015
Introduction of RTD
• Incorporates pure metals or certain alloys that increase in resistance as
temperatures increases.

• Platinum, Nickel and Copper are the most commonly used (pure
metals)

• Tungsten and Nickel alloys are also used.

• Pt100 is a common RTD type made of platinum and its resistance in

0°C is 100 ohms.

02/13/2015
• A change in temperature
will cause an RTD heat
or cool, producing a
proportional change in
resistance.

02/13/2015
Characteristic RTD

• These metals are best suited for RTD

application because of the linear
resistance temperature characteristic.
• The high coefficient of resistance, an
their ability to withstand temperature
cycle.
• Platinum wire is preferred for
precision because
• it resists contamination and corrosion,
• it mechanical and electrical properties are
stable over long period.

Air & Gas Measurement

Air and Gas Stream Measurements Air and gas stream measurements
are a challenge because the rate of transfer of temperature from the
fluid to the sensor is slower than for liquids. Therefore, sensors
specifically designed for use in air or gas place the sensing element
as close to the media as possible.
