Performance Task 1 In Detail

Task 1: S5L2b: Inherited and Acquired Traits

Student Directions:
5 E Model of Instruction
1-Engage
Native plants and animals found in the park are becoming endangered because of the rapid
introduction of foreign species that take over the rainforest each year. As the botanist or
zoologist for Hawaii’s Rainforest, you are responsible for determining what traits and/or
behaviors are present in the native animals and plants which influences their ability to either
survive or caused them to become extinct in the rainforest.

As the botanist /zoologist, you are responsible for designing a model to compare and contrast
inherited and acquired physical traits which influences animals and plants to survive in the
rainforest.

2- Explore
The Botanist/Zoologist will design and ask a minimum of 5 questions which will enable your
team to learn about instinctive and learned traits of the foreign and native plants and animals
in this rainforest.

3- Explain
The Botanist/Zoologist will utilize a variety of resources (multi-media, trade books, webquests
and inquiry based experiments) to obtain information about inherited and acquired traits.

Based on the inquiry based learning experiences embedded within the task, the
Botanist/Zoologist will be able to analyze and evaluate information to gain an in-depth
understanding about the inherited and acquired traits of the animals and plants living in the
rainforest.

NOTE: Possible resources activities: #1 (a lesson module titled, “The Basics of Heredity” from
the Genetics Science Learning Center)

4- Elaborate
With the use of evidence, the Botanist/Zoologist will utilize models to communicate the
differences between acquired and inherited traits. The Botanist/Zoologist will include a
description of at least 2 examples of inherited and 2 examples of learned traits which
influences the animals’ and plants’ ability to survive in the rainforest.

5- Evaluate
Suggested models include but are not limited to: charts, graphs, Venn diagrams.
Direct instruction should be provided for this content.
Some and suggested resources for acquired and inherited traits are as follows: #1 (a video
titled, “Inherited and Acquired Traits (Traits of Livings)” from WatchKnowLearn.org)

Resources:
#1 – Some “traits” activities from the Genetics Science Learning Center

Teacher Notes:
Students should have an opportunity to explore inherited and acquired traits that occur in
humans, so direct instruction and investigations should occur to help students develop a
deeper level of understanding of the concept.

To make this a manageable task for the students, they can conduct research on one animal and
plant.
