UNIT 1: SHAPES
Lesson 1
I. Objectives:
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to gain the following:
1. Knowledge
Vocabulary:
a star, an oval, a heart, a rectangle
Structures:
What shape is it? - It's a star.
2. Language skills
To be able to identify and say the names of the 4 basic shapes above.
3. Core competencies & Personal qualities
Building up interests and good habits in learning English
Building up independent-working characteristics to be a life-long learner
Being supportive and collaborative in interactions with others
Demonstrating communicative, team-working, and solving-problem skills
through learning activities
Building up and practicing hands-on skills through doing craftwork
Point to the shapes in random order and ask the students to individuals/
Option 1: Teacher –
"Find the card" game whole class/
Divide the class into teams. groupwork
Put several flashcards on the board and around the
classroom.
Have a student from each team come up to the front.
Teacher names a card.
Have students find the card.
Give the first team to find the correct card one point.
The team that gets the most points wins.
Option 2:
Teacher –
Game: “Whisper”
whole class/
Divide the class into teams.
groupwork
Have students from each team stand or sit in a row.
Whisper a word/sentence to the first students in each row.
Have the first students whisper the word/sentence to the
second students.
Have teams continue whispering the word/sentence until it
reaches the last students.
The last student in the row has to say out the word/sentence.
Give the first team to say the word/sentence correctly one
point.
The team that gets the most points wins.
2. Listen. Repeat. (Track 08) Teacher/
Student’s book closed. Whole class/
Show the star flashcard and ask the students: What shape is pair work
it? Elicit the answer: a star
Have students work in pairs, one ask and one answer the
question.
Correct student’s pronunciation if necessary.
Teacher/
Student’s book open.
Whole class/
Play audio. Have students listen.
individuals/
Play audio again. Have students listen and repeat.
groupwork/
Show the other shape flashcards and ask the students: What
pair work
shape is it? Encourage the students to reply: It’s a/an
(shape). chorally and individually.
Divide the class into two groups, one asks and one answers
the questions.
Have students work in pairs, practice asking and answering
the questions, using all shapes in part 1.
Check students’ pronunciation and intonation.
3. Draw. Ask and answer. Teacher –
Ask the students to draw shapes on sheets of paper. whole class/
Have students work in pairs, ask and answer questions about pair work
their drawings.
Go around the classroom while the students are doing the
task to provide any necessary help.
Ask some pairs to report back to the class.
E.g.
Student 1: What shape is it?
Student 2: It's an oval.
Activity Book – page 4
Teacher –
Have students open their Activity Books – page 4

Have students look at the exercises 1 and 2 carefully.
Set up time limit by 2 minutes timer bomb (source:

Have students start reading and writing and drawing their
answers. When the time ends by explosion students stop
doing their work.
Have students work in pairs, practice asking and answering
the questions of the exercise number 1.
Give the correct answers to the students.
5’ Follow – up
Option 1: Teacher –
Shapes in the air whole class
Say a word silently.
Have students guess the word and draw it in the air.
Continue the game to the end.
Option 2: Teacher –
Throw the dice whole class/
Put children in pairs. Each pair has a die with the numbers 1– pair work

Number the sentences like the list below:
1. Draw a star.
2. Draw a heart.
3. Draw an oval.
4. Draw a rectangle.
5. Draw a heart and an oval.
6. Draw a star and a rectangle.
Children take turns throwing the die, draw the shape then ask
and answer the question. (For number 5 and 6, students point
to each shape and ask their friends)
E.g.
Student 1: What shape is it?
Student 2: It's an oval.
