Let us compare two images shown above. Which image you like?
Probably image 1, why is to so? Why not image 2?
Garbage on land or in water bodies both are equally harmful for our
ecosystem. Land and air pollution have proven to be harmful to marine life
and its habitats. In ocean many plants and animals lived. Each plant and animal
play its own role in sustaining the world’s largest ecosystem. This is the way nature
intended to maintain a healthy balance across our world.
As you see in fig 2 there are many plastics in the ocean. It causes
pollution in oceans.

Why is Plastic Pollution a

Problem in Our Oceans?
Plastic pollution has put our oceans at the brink of disaster. Every year more
than 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans, but how does that affect
humans and what can we do to stop this behaviour?

 What we don’t see is how the plastics we use become instruments of

torture to the unsuspecting marine life. Plastics are non-biodegradable.
It contains many toxics chemical which are harmful for both marine and
land life. It also affects human life although we all are directly or
indirectly dependent on plants and animals. Some people use fish and
other stuffs as food.

How plastic pollution in oceans can be

controlled?
Seabin is a sustainable way to control plastic pollution
in ocean and also help in cleaning the ocean.
Basic question may come in our mind, what is Seabin and how it
works?
Let us see

If we can have rubbish bins on land then why not have them in the ocean?
This is the basic idea behind Seabin project.
We can stop throwing plastic in ocean in future but what about which is
already in oceans.
Many people go to sea beach spend their holidays and leave plastic items
there.
Due to sea tide it goes into oceans cause several problems as we see it above.
To overcome this problem the sea bin project was started by two Australian
surfers who wanted to clean the world’s oceans. Diagram on next page shows
their story.
Let us how does it works!!
The Seabin is situated at the water’s surface and is plumbed into a shore-based
water pump on the dock. The water gets sucked into the Seabin bringing all
floating debris and floating liquids into the Seabin. Plastic gets collected in
Seabin and removed by volunteers from time to time.
According to news on seabinproject.com, they have installed 719 Seabin
across many oceans. The amount of waste collected per day is approximately
2804.1kg.
They do many things to promote Seabin across world. Below few are listed
down –
 They made a Seabin foundation which educate youth on reducing plastic
consumption, recycling and how to build new technology to clean
oceans.
 People can donate to install Seabin in larger quantity.
 COMMUNITY ACTIVATION PROGRAMS
…… and many more.
What can we do for cleaner oceans?
 Reduce plastic pollution by refusing single-use plastics and using
reusable bags, cups, and tableware instead.
 By volunteering for waterway and beach clean ups (keep plastic out of
the ocean).
 Aware people nearby about harmful effect of plastic for marine life.
 “People protect what they love.” – Jacques-Yves Cousteau explore the
beach nearby (i.e. juhu, marine drive etc.)
 You may join various campaign for cleaner oceans like as Save the
Oceans, Feed the World.
