After watching the movie entitled, “Silence” I realized how silence itself can be painful when
it is supposed to be peaceful. Who would think that with a simple silence numerous lives would be
taken away. This film really truly affected me in so many ways. Those Japanese people treated
Christianity like it was some kind of disease that is needed to be stop in spreading immediately. I think
that the underground Japanese community managed to keep and sustain their faith despite the
persecutions because they trust God. Even though they cannot see God they remain faithful to what
they believe in that is why no matter how hard the sufferings get they did not even flinch. I learned
that faith is something that you cannot lose although there are some instances that will make it fade
away but it is still there we just have to restore it by praying. I also learned that prayer is very important.
We Christians tend to lose our faith when life gives us so many challenges, we cannot cope up and we
forget to pray. It should not be our weakness because God hears everything what our mind and heart
is saying. He knows what we need even before we pray for it. The missions of the Jesuits in Japan
contribute to the society at that time because of their willingness to save Christianity. We saw how
much sympathy they have for those Christians in the underground. Last things that I really like that I
learned in this movie is to always do what you think is right and choose the decisions that you will not
be the only one who will benefit and most importantly is to choose the thing that God would want. I
really think that the denouncing of the faith by Father Sebastian and Father Christopher was justifiable
because lives of other Christians are on their hands. We can say that they made a mistake in front of
God but I think God will understand them because they did denounce but that does not mean they
forgot who God is. It is not like they completely removed God in their life and they really liked to
denounce in the first place because for me they just did what the situation was asking them to do.
Who would not make that kind of choice if they torture your fellow Christians right in front of you,
right? We can also say that they have the choice to just not denounce but what about the death of
other people. Denouncing or not denouncing will forever hunt them for the rest of their lives but I
think that it is better to save the people than watch them die. If I were in their shoes, I would make
the same choice as them because even though I know denouncing faith is a sin saving lives would be
my first priority. I really cannot imagine the idea that I will let people die without doing anything when
in fact I can save them. I will just pray for God’s forgiveness for not choosing him first and for turning
my back against my religion. This movie showcased until where can we go for God, what are the
things we will do for God’s sake, and how strong are we to make such decisions. Life always test our
faith. It may not be today or tomorrow but by the time you are thinking you are going to cheat, God
is already testing your faith. Silence showed us that in the moment of silence it is not always peace you
will find. Sometimes, it will be the crying of the people full of never ending agony. We may not know
the reason why everything happened and why did God remained silent when all of those are happening
but one thing is for sure he saw every little detail from the beginning to end and did nothing because
he is testing the faith of Father Sebastian and Father Christopher. God will always be the one who
gives us the most challenging problems because it is only there that we know we are growing. He gives
us simple and easy challenges and we grow only little. All in all, let us always let God guides us in
everything we do because when we make him a part of us and we let his plans be our plans then we
are on the right track.
