Students play in pairs. Each pair gets a card which has part of a dialogue on it. Pairs try to
come up with a context for the expression on the card by answering the questions on the
board. Then they write a short dialogue including the phrase with at least three exchanges.
The text on the card does not have to be the start of the dialogue. It can also be the middle
or the ending. Each pair then takes it in turns to read out their card to the class. The other
pairs decide what they think the situation is and what the exchanges might be. They write
these down and then take turns to read them out. The pair with the original card listens to
each exchange and awards a point to the pair who has written the most similar dialogue.
The pair with the most points after all the exchanges have been read is the winner.

Students play in groups of three. Students write three statements on separate cards and pass

chain. Students then start a new chain.

What’s up?
Students play in two groups. First, each group has to prepare three problem cards, each one
defining: what the problem is, what caused it, and what action will be taken. The teacher checks
the cards for meaning and grammar and each group keeps its own cards. A student from group A
picks up a card and mimes the problem for group B. Group B asks yes/no questions to find out what
the problem is. When they do, the student from group A mimes the cause and group B again asks
questions. When group B has guessed the problem and cause correctly, the student from group A
mimes the action. Group B can ask up to a total of 12 questions to find the problem, cause, and
action. If they find the three parts on the card, they win that card and it’s their turn to mime
another problem, cause, and action. In the end, the group with the most cards is the winner.

Sentence Generator
Students play in pairs. Each pair thinks of a sentence with 4 to 6 words and writes each word
on a separate card. The cards are shuffled so that the words are not in the original order. Pairs
swap cards and then have to place the cards they receive in what they think was the original
order. Pairs get 1 point for a correct sentence. Students have 30 seconds to put the words in
order before the teacher checks if they are correct. After five rounds the team with the most
points wins.

Students form groups of three. One student starts saying the alphabet out loud. When the
teacher shouts “Stop!” all the groups have to write down three words starting with the
letter where he/she was stopped. As soon as one team finds three words, another student
starts saying the alphabet. So, be fast and be careful: you only get points for words which
are FOODS, DRINKS, or CLOTHES. The team with the most points wins.

People generally believe that bad things only happen to other people, but never to them. That’s what
I used to think until last year.
One night last May, I was asleep in my bed when I had a strange feeling. I opened my eyes and saw
that everything was in place. I lay in bed feeling confused. Before I could realize what it was, I heard
glass shatter and I felt a violent gust of wind pull me from my bed. I was terrified. I tried to grab
something that would keep me from flying through the smashed window. I grabbed the wooden frame
of the bed and managed to hold on until the wind died down.
I was shaken, but relieved at the same time. I immediately left the building and ran to my parents’
house for safety. They lived in the same neighborhood, so I got there very quickly. Fortunately, I found
them safe and their house was still standing.
What I experienced was a tornado. Never in my life did I think that I would ever experience anything
as disastrous as that. I learned one thing though, and that is never to take life for granted.

G Read the text and answer the questions.
When I was seven years old, my family left the big city and
moved to the countryside. I was very excited because our new
house was near a beautiful forest.
One day, I decided to go for a walk to explore it, but I lost my
way. I tried to get back, but I just went further and further
inside. I looked around and started calling for help, but no
one heard me. I was confused and scared because it was
almost dark, so I sat under a tree and began to cry.
Suddenly, I heard someone coming. It was a boy my age. “Hi,” he
said. “I’m Philip. What’s the matter?” I told Philip that I was lost. “Don’t
worry,” said Philip. “I live near here. I know the forest well.” We walked and
talked until we were back out again. Philip said goodbye and left before I could
thank him.
When I got home my mom was talking to a policeman. They were both very upset. “Oh, Tom, thank
goodness you’re OK!” my mom said when she saw me. “I lost my way in the forest, mom, but I’m fine now.
I’m so sorry.” I said. “You were lucky, young man,” the policeman said. “Never play alone in there, it’s too
dangerous. Eight years ago, a young boy named Philip MacMann lost his way in that same place and never
came back.”
I did not say a word. I wanted to tell them about the boy who helped me, but I was afraid they wouldn’t
believe me. Did a ghost help me? I couldn’t sleep that night, or the next. I never saw Philip again and I never
went back there!

Reading
G Read the essay below and choose A, B, or C to complete the sentences.
Most people today cannot imagine life without the Internet. I believe it is one of the most important
innovations. Thanks to the World Wide Web, our lives are easier and more exciting today.
First of all, the Internet helps us find information easily. For example, we can read the news and find
answers to questions 24 hours a day.
In addition, we can use the Internet for entertainment. We can send emails to friends and watch
movies online. We can even buy clothes without leaving the house!
However, some people would argue that it has a negative effect on society. If we don’t have to leave
our houses to shop, to learn, or to work, what will happen to life as we know it?
In my opinion, the Internet has more advantages than disadvantages. Our lives are better with it and
it is here to stay.
e.g., Most people nowadays 38 We can use the Internet for fun, as we can

35 I’m worried about crime in my area. ....... F Why don’t you buy an alarm clock?
In the United States there’s a burglary almost every 15 seconds. There are a lot of things you can
do to protect your house from burglars.
First of all, you shouldn’t let people you don’t know into your home. You should always look
through the peephole before you open the door. It’s also a bad idea to leave money, jewelry, or keys
next to windows. Always lock all doors and windows when you leave the house, and if possible,
install a burglar alarm system and check it often to make sure it works properly.
Other ways to protect your home are to leave the radio on when you are away and put dusk-to-
dawn lights in the garden. Then, anyone watching the house will think that someone is there.
Finally, never put up a fight with a burglar. Just hand over your valuables and then call the police.
It’s better to be safe than sorry.

Reading
G Read the following text and mark the statements T (true) or F (false).
The person I respect the most is Leonardo da Vinci. He was born on April 15th, 1452 in the town of
Vinci, Italy. His full name was Leonardo di ser Piero da Vinci, which means Leonardo, son of Piero
from Vinci. He was not only one of the greatest painters of all time, but he was also an architect,
sculptor, engineer, inventor, mathematician, and musician.
Leonardo da Vinci was a very intelligent and imaginative man. He created many different designs.
Some of them were for a bicycle, a helicopter, a parachute, and even an airplane! He also liked to study
everything in nature. You can find some of his notebooks in museums today. In them, you can see
drawings of plants and animals, as well as detailed sketches of the human body!
Leonardo da Vinci paid a lot of attention to detail and his paintings are very realistic. The Mona Lisa,
for example, is one of his best known works of art. It is a painting of a woman whose face often makes
people wonder if she is smiling or not.
I respect Leonardo da Vinci for his amazing works of art and his great inventions. His artwork will
last forever.
