Frustration occurs when a goal is blocked or unable to be achieved due to obstacles. There are several sources of frustration, including environmental factors, personal factors, and conflicts between motives. Environmental obstacles from outside sources like other people can cause frustration. Personal frustration stems from having aspirations that exceed one's abilities. Conflicts between motives, such as approach-avoidance conflicts where a goal has both positive and negative attributes, also produce frustration. Learning to identify sources of frustration and adapt to challenges can help reduce stress and anxiety.

Frustration
Presented by :Sidhapara Krishna Defination
Frustration refers to the blocking of
behaviour directed toward a goal. Desire s or motives which are not fulfilled due to certain barrier or obstacles , leads to frustration. Factors Factors can be produce frustration: With holding the reinforcenent Thwarting (mechanically preventing) Conflict Sources of frustration Environmental factors Personal factors Conflicts between and among motives Environmental frustration Environmental obstacles can frustrate the satisfaction of motives. By making it difficult or impossible for a person to attain a goal, environmental obstacles can frustrate the satisfaction of motives. An obstacles may be something physical –locked door or lack of money People – teachers and parents Ex : who prevent us from achieving our goals Personal frustration People are often frustrated because they aspire to goals have a level of aspiration beyond their capacity to performed (personal inadeqacy) Unattainable goals can be imp. Source of frustration. This are largely learned goals that can not be achived because they are beyond a person’s abilities. Ex : a boy may be taught to aspire to high academic achievement but lack the ability to make better then a mediocre record. he may be motivated to join the school band ,play on the football team ,be admitted to a certain club ,or act the lead in play and be frustrated because he doesn’t have the necessary talent. •Thus people are often frustrated because they aspire to goals-have a level of aspiration- beyond there capacity to perform. Conflict produced frustration
It is a major source of frustration in which the
expression of one motive interferes with the expression of the other motives. In expressing aggression for ex. People are often caught in such a conflict . On the one hand they would like to give vent to their rage ; on the other they fear the social disapproval which will result if they do. Life is full of conflict and frustration arising from them. conflict defination: It is a mental state of unpleasantness and tension. Type of conflict Approach-approach conflicts Avoidance –avoidance conflict Approach-avoidence conflict Multipal approach- avoidance conflicts Approach-approach conflict
It is a conflict between two positive goals ,
which are equally attractive at the same time. Goal + ve = s = Goal - ve E.g. 1.when person is hungry and sleepy at the same time. It choosing one of the goals and giving up the other. This kind of conflicts are resolved either by satisfying the first one goal and then the other. It is a easy to resolve and generate little emotional behaviour. Avoidance-avoidance conflict:
It is a conflict between the two negative
goals. E.g. 1. a student must spend the next two days studying for examination or face the possibility of failure. 2. do the job ,which a person dislike or loss the income. Behavioural consequesences:
Vacillation of behaviour and thought meaning
that people are inconsistant in what they do and mean they do 1st one thing then other. They try to leave the conflict situation.e.g. running away from home of student. This way of leaving the conflict is called regression. They may adopt daydreaming or regression. Approach-avoidance conflict:
In this type of conflict, a person is both
attracted and repelled by the same goal. It is the most difficult conflict to resolve because when the person approaches the goal, the nagative valence become stronger. Goal +ve and Goal –ve =s Aswith avoidance-avoidance conflicts, vacillation is common in approach-avoidance conflict; people in this conflicts approach the the goal untill the –ve valence becomes too strong, and then thay back away from it . Often however the –ve valence is not repellent enough to stop the approech behaviour. in such cases people raech the goal but much more slowly and hesitatingly than they would have without the –ve valence; and untill the goal is reached, there is a frustration . Even after the goal is reached an individual may feel uneasy because of the –ve valence attached to it. Whether aperson is frustrated by reaching a goal slowly or by not reaching it at all emotional reaction such as afear, anger, and resentment commonly accompany approech- avoidance conflict. Multiple approach-avoidance conflict
It means that several goals with +ve
and –ve valence are involve. E.g. A woman between her marriage and career conflict . Behavioural consequances
Many behavioural problems (
internalised ): The mrriage has a +ve valence for her as it gives stabilities and security and she loves the man. On the other hand the marriage is repellant to her because it will mean giving up an attractive offer of ajob in another city. Shemay get a new job but also repelled by the problems it will creat for her marriege. solution Frustration and confict cause stress and anxiety causing harm to the body. Some common reaction to frustration are persistence, escape and aggression. Some method of reliving frustration are as followed : Identyfied the source of frustration.try to control it accept the situation. Checked everything out carefully before making a change in your job or residance. Try to find compromises.look for +ve things when all choice seems –ve . Seek reliable help from advisors, teachers and other counsellors Avoid indecision. Stick with your decision and forgot about other choice unless you are clearly wrong. By using ego defenca mechanisms. Coping with frustration :
When feeling frustrated ,instead of
getting angry at the situation or at others, sit back, relax and wait. Say to your self. “as things developed, I will through listening to guidence from my unconscious, adapt to changing circumstances grow with them.” “Imay not get what I want when I want it ;I trust that things will work out in their own good time ,for my ultimate benefites as long as I remain calm and peaceful.” “I may not get what I want at all, and yet ,in remaining calm and attentive, I may discover something else that I need even more than what I thought I wanted.”
So it is a simple : take responsibility for your
life , adopt peacefully to life changes, and you will find true peace – and joy – in all that you do. Thank you…
