1. The Institutehas an establishmentin Tehranat which British scholars, men and women of learningversed in the
arts, friends of Iran, may reside and meet their Iraniancolleagues in order to discuss with them subjects of
common interest:the arts, archaeology, history, literature, linguistics, religion, philosophy and cognate subjects.
2. The Instituteprovides accommodationfor senior scholars and for teachersfrom British Universities in orderthat
they may refreshthemselves at the source of knowledge from which their teaching derives. The same service is
being renderedto younger studentswho show promise.of developing interestsin Persian studies.
3. The Institute, whilst concernedwith Persianculturein the widest sense, is particularlyconcernedwith the devel-
opment of archaeological techniques, and seeks the co-operation of Iranianscholars and students in applying
currentmethods to the resolution of archaeological and historical problems.
4. Archaeological excavation using modern scientific techniques as ancillary aids is one of the Institute'sprimary
tasks. These activities, which entail a fresh appraisalof previous discoveries, have already yielded new histori-
cal, architectural, and archaeological evidence which is adding to our knowledge of the past and of its bearing
on the modem world.
5. In pursuitof all the activities mentioned in the precedingparagraphsthe Instituteis graduallyaddingto its library,
is collecting learned periodicals, and is publishing a journal, Iran, which appearsannually.
7. The Instituteendeavours to collaboratewith universities and educational institutionsin Iranby all the means at
its disposal and, when consulted, assists Iranianscholars with technical advice for directing them towards the
appropriateacademic institutionsin British universities.
