Virtual and Augmented Reality for the


Maritime Sector
Abstract: The maritime sector with its wide spectrum of ancillary
conditions can benefit from advanced computer graphics in many
ways. The paper presents several applications from marketing over
design to training, maintenance and exceptionally lucrative uses that
are based on virtual or augmented reality technology. Some of the
technical challenges that arise from the ambitious environment are
sketched and an outlook on future research and development is given
with the some supporting data and facts. 
 
 
Virtual reality (VR): It is a computer technology that
uses Virtual reality headsets, sometimes in combination with physical
spaces or multi-projected environments, to generate realistic images,
sounds and other sensations that simulate a user's physical presence
in a virtual or imaginary environment.
 
Augmented Reality (AR): View of reality is modified by a
computer. Augmented reality enhances one’s current perception of
reality, whereas in contrast, Virtual reality replaces the real world
with a simulated one. With the help of advanced AR technology the
information about the surrounding real world of the user becomes
interactive and digitally manipulable. Information about the
environment and its objects is overlaid on the real world
