Connie Coker: Assistant Head of School,
St. Anne’s of Annapolis
Sarah and I collaborated on an almost daily basis as we taught 5th and 6th
Grade Social Studies alongside one another. Sarah not only generated dynamic
ideas for lessons and curriculum development, she was also masterful in their
implementation. As a teacher and technology coordinator at the time, I was
amazed at the fluidity in which Sarah was able to glide through her lessons with
engaging, meaningful, and relevant technology use. Her lessons were
memorable; the content was memorable; and the students (and Sarah) always
had a blast. She is an effective communicator and maintained strong
relationships with parents. She was also masterful at building relationships with
students in the classroom and through extracurricular activities-- a model and
mentor for building lifelong learning in any arena. I am consistently inspired by
Sarah's passion and craft for teaching and learning. Sarah comes highly
recommended as a colleague, teacher, student, and friend.

Counseling
Sarah Cooney and I worked together — I was her principal — from 2011 to 2015. Sarah's
teaching skills are exceptional. She is demanding and funny, and conveys to students in rare
ways how much she cares for them while holding them to high academic standards. When
Sarah and I worked together, she taught primarily ancient civilizations in sixth grade social
studies. and she worked beautifully in "backward design," asking what content students
needed to know and what skills they needed to acquire, and designing her curriculum to
fulfill those aims. From the essential question, "What makes a civilization," Sarah's lessons fell
into place. As implied, Sarah balances content and skills masterfully, recognizing that there is
no divide between the two; in her classes students learn important facts and theories, while
building research, writing, and public speaking skills simultaneously. (Con’t next page)

Sarah's heart is enormous, and the effort she puts in to turn her
empathy into action seems boundless. No one cares more than
Sarah, and this is evident in the way students gravitate toward her
and think of her as a mentor. Her creativity and imagination when it
comes to lesson planning ensure that her students are always
engaged and pushed to expand their thinking. The combination of
Sarah's many years of experience working in schools and her drive
to continue to grow make her a valuable asset in the endeavor to
shape adolescents into thoughtful, well-rounded humans.

Advancement at Green Acres School
I have known Sarah for the past three years working at Harlem
Village Academy. As the school counselor, I have partnered with
Sarah on many occasions to support our students on their social
emotional needs. Sarah is a dedicated teacher and goes above
and beyond for all her students. Sarah has developed so many
great connections and relationships with students. Students see her
as someone they can turn to for help not only with academics but
also with their challenges too. They see her as the kind,
nonjudgmental, and trust worthy. (Con’t next page)
