Iot Devices
Identify and analyze a device that is an IoT device now, but in the past was a non-
IoT device. Describe and list the features of the device. Compare the functions of
the device in the past to the functions of the device now.
The doorbell in the past was just a bell to inform people in the house that someone
is now at the door. Depends on when we refer, it might have some different
functions. But initially, it was just a bell. The people in the house have to come to the
door and speak to the one at the door.
Now, with embedded microphone, camera, speaker, motion detector, and even the
control of the door. You can open the door for your guests even when you're not in
the house, through the internet. If you are in the house, you can see who is there, by
the screen in the house, and speak to each other via its communication system. You
can record whatever is happening in front of the door 24/7. And also monitors the
doorstep and will click the moments leading up to a motion alert.
Compare the functions of the device in the past to the functions of the device now.
Doorbell in the past: 1. People can ring the bell to inform people indoors.
Doorbell now: 1. You can ring the bell to inform people indoors. 2. You can talk to
each other and see each other. 3. Monitors the doorstep, and makes
video recording. 4. Detect the motion and provide an alert for your safety.
For your chosen IoT device, list any improvements or any diminishments if they
exist, over the non-IOT device. Describe any limitations that are present in the new
IoT version of the device.
Improvements:
1. More possible interaction between people at the door and people in the house (or
own the house).
2. You can control the access to your house via the internet connection, even when
you're not at home.
3. Constantly monitoring the doorstep is possible.
Limitations:
1. The sound, video you can obtain by this system are only in the range of your
doorstep.
2. The quality of collected data may depend on the physical conditions of the
environment. (for example, monitoring may be difficult when its dark, foggy..)
Describe any privacy issues with the IoT device that never existed in the original
version of the device. Compare the price of the original device to the price of the
new IoT version of the device. When performing a price comparison, attempt to
normalize for the changing value of currency over time by using an online inflation
calculator.
