Engl - 1010 Reflection

The student reflects on their English 1010 course, noting that they gained more than expected from the one-on-one guidance from their professor in developing writing skills. They learned about rhetorical strategies, critical thinking, the composing process, and writing conventions in Unit 3. The key threshold concept they connected with was the use of Ethos, Pathos and Logos. The student also learned the importance of fact-checking research and choosing a topic they could narrow down with important facts. While an online student, they benefited from a library research session. Going forward, the student will continue working on their writing skills and checking sources for accuracy.

ENGL- 1010

Reflection

Reflecting on this course English 1010 I was surprised at the information I did gain.

When taking this class, I only expected to do basic assignments and take tests. This class

becomes more than that with the one on one time with my professor. She was able to help

guide me into creating writing skills. English is not the easiest subject for me, and I have

struggled in the past with gaining writing skills. This class helped me breakthrough those

barriers and gain the knowledge I can use with my other classes.

Reflection on unit three I was able to gain knowledge on different concepts with writing.

We learned different things such as how to use Rhetorical strategies, critical thinking,

composing process, and conventions of writing. The threshold concept that I connected with

most in unit three about Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. Before beginning this class, I had no idea

what Ethos, Pathos, and Logos meant. Ethos is when you need to help the reader see the

credibility or the character in the story that is being shared. Pathos is when the writer uses

emotion to bring the reader in. Logos is the logic or reason in which the reader can be

convinced about the writing. Now with the knowledge I have on the different things learned in

this unit three I can now use with other papers in other classes. I will continue to work on my

writing skills by using things like Ethos, Pathos, and Logos.

When looking at the research I did in this class it shows how much is out there that can

be false. I learned that I need to fact-check when I am researching my information for papers. I
learned how to find and solve where people get their information by fact-checking. Fact-

checking is important when writing a paper that argues about a subject. I picked a fun subject

about recycling. This subject had a lot of different viewpoints and was easy to fact-check. When

finding a topic to write about I was able to narrow down my topic and bring up the important

facts about there being other big issues with recycling.

Other things in the class that happened was when our librarian help research. This was

fun because it helped us find different options for finding information on a subject we picked. I

may not use the librarian research for help in other classes just because I am an online-only

student. If I were to go into class, there is a small chance I would ask for help through a

librarian. My papers in the class had good MLA and or APA citations. I was able to manage to

work on finding my sources for the subject of my paper.

If I were going to change the process of me taking this class, I would choose to have

done this class on another semester because of the timing I feel like I could have put more of

my energy into this class. I had my wedding and honeymoon at the beginning of the semester.

This class helped me find better ways of writing. I am now aware that I need to source check my

sources because there is false information out in the world. Writing takes time but it is a tool

needed.
