Figure 1
a. Calculate the combined resistance of
i) resistors A and B ii) resistors A, Band C iii) resistors A ,B, C and D
b. Calculate
i)the current in the battery [1]
ii)the energy transferred from the battery to the circuit in 50s. [1]
Q2.Figure 2 shows 3 lamps and a fuse connected to a power supply .
Figure 2
The emf of the supply is 220V. Each lamp is labeled 220V, 40W. The rating of the fuse is 2.0A.
a. Calculate:
i)the current is each lamp [2]
ii)the current in the fuse, [1]
iii)the total number of lamps, all in parallel, that could be connected without
blowing the fuse. [2]
b. After a very long period of use, the wire filament of one of the lamps
becomes thinner.
i)What is the effect of this change on the resistance of the filament? [1
ii)State and explain the effect of this change on the power of the lamp.[2]
3.
Q3.The circuit in Figure 3 includes an immersion heater and a 6.0 V battery..
Figure 3
a. State the name and purpose of component X. [1]
b. The heater is designed to work from a 3.6V supply. It has power rating of
4.5W at this voltage.
By considering the current in the heater, calculate the resistance of
component X when there is the correct potential difference across the
heater. [5]
c. After some time the heater is switched on ,and the ammeter reading is
seen to have decreased. Explain why this happened . [2]
A1)a)i) R = 6 + 6 = 12 ohms
b)i) As the wire of the filament lamp gets thinner, which means the cross sectional are
decreases, the resistance of the lamp increases.
ii) An increase in resistance will decrease the current, which is is directly proportional to
power. If current decreases then the power of the lamp will also decrease.
A3)a) Component X is a variable resistor. It’s purpose is that it gives the ability to adjust
resistance in a circuit.
c) After some time the resistance of the variable resistor increases, which increases the
total resistance of the circuit which means that the current in the circuit will decrease, and so
will the ammeter reading.
