Big Picture Goals

Students will identify each note on the staff of the treble clef.

Students will understand the function of the musical staff

Process

DAY 1: Space Notes (45 minutes)


10 minutes: Intro/Treble Clef
- Discuss with students the objectives of the next unit and each lesson
- Show students the treble and ask if they know anything about it
- Draw the treble clef starting with the “G” and discuss its use
15 minutes: Space Notes
- Show an F on the board and ask students what note it might be
- Show where the G is with the treble clef
- Ask what that might make the note (F)
- Write alphabet line on the board
- Ask what the note above (A) might be
- Explain that ABC… starts over after G
- Use the same strategy to figure out the C and E
- Help students see “FACE” in the notes
15 minutes: Game
- Teaching the game
- Deciding how to create teams (boys vs. girls, sides, rows…)
- Have one student from each team do a practice round
- Explain rules (wait till I say “go” etc.)
- Practice round
- Playing the game
5 minutes: Closure
- Have students line up
- Take some time to breath after an exciting game
- Show print outs of notes and go down the line ask students to identify

DAY 2: Line Notes (45 minutes)


10 minutes: Intro/Treble Clef Review/Space Note Review
- Review what treble clef is and represents
- Review methods to figure out space notes (FACE/treble clef)
- Review note by note
15 minutes: Line Notes
- Show an E on the board and ask students what note it might be
- Show where the G is with the treble clef
- Ask what that might make the note (E)
- Write alphabet line on the board
- Review what the note above (A) might be
- Explain that ABC… starts over after G
- Use the same strategy to figure out the G, B, D and F
- Help students see “EGBDF” in the notes
- Use my memory techniques (every good boy etc…)
- Have students come up with their own techniques
15 minutes: Game
- Reviewing the game
- Deciding how to create teams (boys vs. girls, sides, rows…)

- Explain rules (wait till I say “go” etc.)
