Environmental Science (Module 7 Part 2)

This document discusses climate change and global warming. It defines key terms like weather, climate, and the greenhouse effect. It also distinguishes between climate change and global warming. The document then shows a graph comparing levels of carbon dioxide and global temperature over time from 1880 to 2010. The graph demonstrates a correlation - as carbon dioxide levels increased, global temperatures also increased. The document suggests that the rise in carbon dioxide is the reason for increased global temperatures and climate change.

CO2 is the Reason

ARJUNE A. LUMAYNO
On climate

What’s the difference between

weather and climate?
On climate
Weather: state of the atmosphere in
a given place over a short period of
time (minutes to months)

Climate: how the atmosphere

behaves over relatively long periods
of time (usually measured over 30
years or so)
On climate

What’s the greenhouse effect?

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
On climate
Greenhouse effect:
when certain gases in
the air trap radiation
coming from Earth’s
surface

What’s the difference between

climate change and global
warming ?

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
On climate
Climate change: deviation from
climate normals (mostly, changes in
temperature and precipitation
averages in a given place for a
period of time)

Global warming: rise in the average

temperature of the Earth

Activity 2: CO2 is the reason
Objectives:
In this learning activity, the learners will:
•interpret the relationship of carbon dioxide and
temperature

Materials: graph of CO2 and global temperature

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Procedure
Study the graph below (LM Figure 9.1). Answer the guide questions.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Guide Question No. 1:
How much is the increase in temperature from
1880 to 2010?

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Guide Question No. 2:
What happened to the amount of carbon dioxide
from 1880 to 2010?

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Guide Question No. 3:
What is the relationship between the amount of
carbon dioxide and global temperature?

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION
Guide Question No. 4:
When was temperature at its highest and at its
lowest?

DATA INTERPRETATION
• 200 KWh of energy used will release 1,228.8 kg
of CO2 annually and will need 6.144 trees to
absorb the emitted CO2
• 1,000 kg(1 ton) of carbon dioxide emission per
year. 5 TREES are needed to sequester or
absorbed.
• 1,500 kg(1.5 tons) of carbon dioxide emission
peyear. 7.5 or 8 TREES are needed to
sequester or absorbed.
• 2,000 kg(2 tons) of carbon dioxide emission
peyear. TEN TREES are needed to sequester or
absorbed.

Application
List down gadgets and appliances that contribute
to carbon dioxide emissions, then write effective
actions on how to reduce the emissions.
